[Gossip] Stephen Colbert Draws Criticism Over Allegedly Racist Joke
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 03.28.2014

Stephen Colbert's satirical act has been taken the wrong way. Colbert, the star of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central where he plays an over-the-top conservative talk show host, is being blamed for a message posted to Twitter in which a joke about Asians is made.

The message was in relation to a segment that aired in which Colbert took NFL owner Dan Snyder to task for forming the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation in response to criticism that the Redskins name is racist. Colbert mocked Snyder in his usual way in character, and then the Colbert Report Twitter account (which he doesn't run) posted the following:

I am willing to show #Asian community I care by introducing Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever

Without the context of the segment, criticism flew over Twitter with a #CancelColbert hashtage gaining traction. The message was removed, and the Colber Report Twitter account noted:

For the record @ColbertReport is not controlled by Stephen Colbert or his show. He is @StephenAtHome Sorry for the confusion ... This is a Comedy Central account, with no oversight from Stephen/show.

Colbert himself commented, noting in typical satirical (but pointed) manner:

#CancelColbert - I agree! Just saw @ColbertReport tweet. I share your rage. Who is that, though? I'm @StephenAtHome.
