[Movies] Co-Writer Says Kevin Spacey Nearly Starred in Independence Day
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 04.07.2014

Bill Pullman is well-known for his role as President Whitmore in Independence Day, but as it turns out he wasn't the co-writer's first choice for the film. Dean Devlin, who also produced the Roland Emmerich blockbuster, told THR that he wrote the role with Kevin Spacey in mind.

Devlin, who has been friends with Spacey since their high school days, told the site that the actor was having trouble breaking into Hollywood and that the role was written for him. Fox shot down the idea though and the role was re-written for Pullman.

"We literally had an argument," Devlin said, "and the executive, who's no longer there, said he just didn't think Kevin Spacey was a movie star."

And of course, we all know how the whole "Spacey isn't a movie star" thing played out.
