[TV] SyFy Orders Series Based on The Expanse
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 04.12.2014

SyFy announced this week via an official press release that they've given a straight-to-series greenlight order for the space-opera project The Expanse. SyFy President Dave Howe announced the new series, which will have a 10-episode order.

The show is being produced by Alcon Television Group (ATG), a division of Alcon Entertainment and is the company's first series order. The pilot is being written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men; Iron Man), and they will serve as series writers and executive producers for the show.

The series is based on the New York Times bestselling book series collectively called The Expanse, written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name of James S. A. Corey). Abraham and Franck will also serve as producers for the show.

Below is an official synopsis for the story:

A thriller set two hundred years in the future, "The Expanse" follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship's captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

Speaking on the series, Howe stated: "'The Expanse' is epic in scale and scope and promises to be Syfy's most ambitious series to date. Bringing this coveted book franchise to television with our partners at Alcon and the Sean Daniel Company is a giant win for Syfy, reinforcing our overall strategy to produce bold, provocative and compelling sci-fi fantasy stories. 'The Expanse' joins a killer line-up of high-concept, high quality series, along with recently announced original projects 'Ascension,' '12 Monkeys,' the renewal of 'Helix,' and the soon to premiere 'Dominion.'"

ATG President Sharon Hall added: 'The Expanse' is an addictive, sophisticated, character-driven franchise and Mark and Hawk are the perfect people to steer it. Their script is a totally immersive and accessible sci-fi journey. We are thrilled to be in business with Syfy on this venture."

Alcon co-founders and co-CEO's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will be executive producers for the show with Sharon Hall. Alcon TV executive Ben Roberts is set as the co-producer, and Ben Cook will be producer for the project.

The Expanse was developed by Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of the Sean Daniel Company with Fergus and Ostby. They will also serve as executive producers.

Alcon will retain the worldwide distribution rights to the show and is currently out to cast the show and find directors.
