An action-comedy involving espionage and Nazi gold...
Lionsgate has staked out a date for their Johnny Depp-starring action-comedy Mortdecai. The studio has announced that the David Koepp-directed film, which is currently shooting and also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Olivia Munn, Oliver Platt, Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Goldblum, hits theaters on February 6th, 2015. That puts it opposite the Liam Neeson-led thriller Run All Night and Sergei Bodrov's fantasy Seventh Son.
Depp has had a hard time at the box office lately; his last film, Transcendence, bombed this last weekend. The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows were heavy disappointments as well. February is traditionally a dumping ground for films during the dead time before the Oscars so perhaps the studio thinks that Depp's name can capitalize on a weak month for some profit.
Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.
