Warner Bros. CEO Says LEGO Movie Franchise Could Be the New Harry Potter
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 05.02.2014

The LEGO Movie is one of the unparalleled success stories of this year, without question. The film surpassed all expectations in its box office run, bringing in $252.9 million domestically and $452.9 million worldwide on a budget of just $60 million. And with a sequel on the way, Warner Bros. sees the franchise as being one of their big tentpoles on par with Harry Potter and DC Comics films.

That news comes from Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes, who hosted the company's first quarter earnings call this week (via Business Week). Bewkes said that the film was a big factor in the film division's first quarter success and said that franchise plans are definitely. He noted that the property is an "evergreen franchise that, along with DC Comics and with [Harry Potter creator] J.K. Rowling's new series of films, will underpin the economics of our film business for many, many years."

Bewkes added that the company will also of course maintain their TV and video game ties to the property as well.
