The NFL Draft Gets Record Ratings Last Night
Posted by Joseph Lee on 05.09.2014

Deadline reports that ESPN's coverage of Day 1 of the 2014 NFL Draft brought in a 6.8 metered market rating last night. This is an increase of 48% compared to last year's 4.8 metered market rating. It's the highest NFL Draft Day 1 rating since ESPN began airing the coverage on April 29, 1980 (which featured the Detroit Lions pick Billy Sims). The previous high was 2010's coverage, which had a 5.4 rating.

It managed to beat the NHL and NBA playoffs, as well the primetime lineup of the other networks. The broadcast (which aired from the Radio City Music Hall in New York City) peaked in the 9:45-10 PM period with an 8.0 when the Dallas Cowboys picked Zack Martin from Notre Dame. Day 1 of the 2013 draft brought in a 4.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic with 6.1 million total viewers.

The draft is usually held in April but was pushed back this year because of schedule issues with the venue. The NFL now plans to hold the event every May. There will be more rounds today and Saturday.

Here are the 2014 NFL Draft Top-10 metered markets:

1.Cleveland -13.0
2. Houston – 11.6
3. Austin, TX -11.3
4. Greenville, SC -10.8
5. New Orleans -10.8
6. Buffalo -10.6
7. San Antonio – 10.2
8. Columbus, OH – 8.9
9. Greensboro, NC – 8.8
10. Philadelphia – 8.8

Here are the ratings for 2010-2014 for the Draft:

2014 NFL Draft – 6.8 – May 8, 2013
2013 NFL Draft – 4.6 – April 25, 2013
2012 NFL Draft – 4.8 – April 26, 2012
2011 NFL Draft – 4.3 – April 28, 2011
2010 NFL Draft – 5.4 – April 22, 2010
