He designed the xenomorph...
Bloody Disgusting reports that Swiss artist H.R. Giger (real name Hans-Ruedi Giger), who designed the xenomorph (among other things, including the engineer) in Alien, has passed away at the age of 74 from injuries he received after falling down the stairs of his Zurich home.
Giger was born in Switzerland in 1940, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1980 for his work on Alien. In addition to making the titular Alien, he also created the monster train that appears in Species. He was also the conceptual artist for Poltergeist II: The Other Side and he designed the poster for the 1985 movie Future-Kill. He was best known for his surreal art that mixed technology with organic materials, nightmarish macabre imagery and fetishistic sexual paintings. He most recently worked with Ridley Scott on 2012's Prometheus, providing some of the designs.
411 would like to give our condolences to his family, friends and fans.
