Channing Tatum Says Steven Soderbergh Will Be Back for Magic Mike XXL Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 05.20.2014
But not to direct...
Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh are gearing up for the sequel to Magic Mike, but without Soderbergh in the director's chair. The two spoke with GQ about Magic Mike XXL, which will see Greg Jacobs at the helm following Soderbergh's retirement from directing. Check out some highlights:
Tatum on trying to get Soderbergh to un-retire: "I lobbied probably harder than anybody else. We had many, many nights of heated debate. I was, 'I don't f--ing get it! Why?' And he's like, 'I don't need it.' "
Soderbergh on still being involved as cinematographer/editor: "I want to be there, but I don't want to be the director. I want to be a part of it. I want to be in the band, but I just don't want to be the frontman this time."
Tatum on the plot focusing on conventions he would go to as a stripper: "It's an incubator for insanity. It doesn't matter almost what you do onstage. I don't want to put anything in black and white on a page, but if you've been to one, you know how crazy it gets, and now pour kerosene on that. You've seen 'Magic Mike'. Now multiply that. Mob mentality. It's just exponentially crazier. I thought it was absolutely insane."
