Universal Spending $50 Million to Replace Paul Walker in Fast & Furious 7 Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 05.22.2014
It's not cheap...
Replacing the late Paul Walker in Fast & Furious 7 is costing Universal a pretty penny. THR reports that an insurance claim to Fireman's Fund in excess of $50 million.
As you know, Walker was killed last year in a non-set-related car accident at the end of November and the studio is moving forward with CGI technology and body doubles, with a thirteen-week shoot that finishes in July with a big crowd scene involving 600 people. Walker's brothers Cody and Caleb will be doing some scenes in his stead, with Caleb approximating his body size and mannerisms, Cody's eyes and acting from another, unnamed actor. They are also using unused previous material featuring Walker from the past two films.
The budget for the film was already $200 million and Universal is filing a claim for the extra budgeting due to Walker's passing, which is reportedly a source of tension between the studio and the insurer. The previous record was $20 million used to replace John Candy when he died while filming MWagons East! in 1994.
