Maleficent Gets $24.2 Million Opening Day
Posted by Joseph Lee on 05.31.2014

Coming Soon reports that Walt Disney Studios' Maleficent (starring Angelina Jolie) brought in $4.2 million from Thursday screenings and a total of $24.2 million for its opening day. This isn't up to the standard of other recent films which have had $35 million or more for their opening weekend, but it's a strong debut for a film with a female lead. This will likely be Jolie's highest opening weekend.

It's higher than a similar movie, Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful, which opened in March 2013 and had a $79 million opening weekend. This could be attributed to the fact that most schools are out now and the younger demographic would be more likely to show up. While it could get as high as $70 million this weekend, it's likely to earn close to $65 million.

Meanwhile, Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West only had $6.1 million yesterday and may not be able to hit $20 million for the weekend. This is down from the over $50 million weekend that Ted brought in.
