Stone taking on the NSA scandal...
Oliver Stone has long held an obsession with government conspiracies and the abuses of power--not to mention the media's obsession with the figures behind such matters--with films like JFK, Nixon and W. in his resume. So he would seem like the perfect person to direct a film about Edward Snowden. The Wrap reports that such a thing will now come to pass, with Stone signed in to direct an adaptation of The Snowden Files.
The source for the film is an article written by Luke Harding of the Guardian which documented Snowden's leaking of thousands of classified NSA documents to the media last year. Snowden is looking at a prison sentence of thirty years in the US and is in Russia where he's been granted temporary asylum.
Stone said in a statement, "This is one of the greatest stories of our time. A real challenge. I'm glad to have the Guardian working with us."
The film will kick off production before the end of the year. Sony is developing their own Snowden film, based on Glenn Greenwald's No Place to Hide.
