Bill Condon To Direct Live-Action Beauty and the Beast For Disney
Posted by Joseph Lee on 06.05.2014

Variety reports that after Maleficent earned $170 million worldwide in its opening weekend, Disney is now working on a live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Parts 1 & 2) will direct from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Mandeville Films will produce.

Disney's 1991 animated film earned over $375 million worldwide, was turned into a Broadway play and was one of a select few animated films to get a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards.

Disney has previously created a new live-action Alice in Wonderland and a prequel to The Wizard of Oz (Oz the Great and Powerful). It's currently working on live action versions of The Jungle Book (directed by Jon Favreau) and Cinderella (directed by Kenneth Branagh). The latter will debut in March.

Condon, who just finished a script for Fox's The Greatest Showman On Earth, has experience with musicals if this film decides to follow in the 1991 feature's footsteps. He wrote Chicago and directed Dreamgirls.
