The Fault In Our Stars Beats Edge of Tomorrow In Friday Box Office

It takes first place...
Coming Soon reports that The Fault In Our Stars had an opening day box office gross of $26.1 million, including the $8.2 million from Thursday previews and special higher price ticketed events. It's not only above the $22.8 million opening day for Divergent (another Shailene Woodley film that went on to earn $54.1 million for the weekend), but it forced Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow into second place.
The Fault In Our Stars is helped by the teen audience that read the John Green novel, especially now that school is out. The film may end up doing better overall than Divergent, but it likely won't do better than last week's #1, Maleficent. That movie made $69 million and Fault is only expected to get below $60 million.
Edge of Tomorrow, which was directed by Doug Liman and co-stars Emily Blunt, brought in $10.7 million and will make less than $30 million for the weekend. The action movie targeted males and may have been hurt by that demographic choosing to watch the NBA Finals and the NHL Stanley Cup Finals instead. It could end up dropping to third by tomorrow, behind the second weekend of Maleficent.
