Along with Zak Penn...
Guillermo del Toro has revealed that a script for Pacific Rim 2 is actively in the works. Del Toro spoke with Buzzfeed and revealed that writing of the sequel is underway. The first film was considered to be a disappointment in the US but scored huge overseas, with a total worldwide gross of $411 million from a $190 million budget.
Del Toro revealed that Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) are in the script for the sequel, noting, "I'm working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We've been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film] was involved in the storyline and now I'm writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul."
The film has not yet been given a greenlight from Legendary Pictures but that company's CEO Thomas Tull previously said that they were open to a second film. Del Toro said of the new script, "I'm going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle."
