He gets why comic book fans didn't though...

Iron Man 3 is perhaps the most controversial of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Many people weren't fans of the fact that in the film, Adrian Killian is revealed to be the true mastermind behind Ben Kingsley's Mandarin, who is in fact an actor named Trevor Slattery. That was retconned in the Marvel One-Shot All Hail the King which reveals that there really is an actual Mandarin but Guy Pearce, who played Killian, says he loved the twist.
Pearce told IGN "Personally, I loved it, and I was never a comic book fan growing up, so I have no attachment to the [Mandarin]. I mean, I get it. The loyalty to those characters, I totally get it, but based on the sort of single-entity movie -- and particularly based on Ben Kingsley's performance -- I just adored what that turned into. But I do certainly understand that some diehard fans kind of went, 'Aww... Come on!' [Laughs]"
The twist and its controversy didn't hurt the box office; Iron Man 3 grossed $1.2 billion worldwide and is the sixth-highest grossing film around the world.
