Ice Cube, Dr Dre and Eazy-E Roles Cast In Straight Outta Compton
Posted by Joseph Lee on 06.16.2014

Billboard reports that Universal Studios' N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton has been given the green light and the roles of Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and Ice Cube have been cast. Cube, Dre and Eazy-E's widow Tomica Wright have signed off on the actors who will play them.

Cube has wanted his son O'Shea Jackson to play him and Universal has agreed with the decision.

In the role of Dr. Dre is Marcus Callender (Steve Zaillian's HBO pilot Criminal Justice), who beat actors like Michael B. Jordan to get the job. He is a classically trained actor who has worked with New York's Shakespeare Lab at the Public Theater but has played bit roles on Blue Bloods and Elementary.

Jason Mitchell will play Eazy-E after a screen test. He reportedly has no acting background and currently works in a kitchen. IMDB currently has an incorrect listing of the entire cast, including Donat Sean Abiff as Dre and Brian Gilbert as Cube.

The film has been in development hell for some time. Alan Wenkus, S. Leigh Savidge and Andrea Berloff have all written scripts. In 2012, F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job) signed on to direct and in late 2013, Jonathan Herman reworked the script, which renewed the studio's interest. Universal shot a sequence from the movie in Los Angeles this past spring to qualify for California's tax credit before it expires. Wright was the final person keeping the film from production but she has now approved it. The film begins production in less than two months.
