"It's simply not true..."
The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with Bourne franchise producer Frank Marshall, who denied a report from Latino Review that Matt Damon will return as Jason Bourne for the fifth film, which arrives on July 15, 2016. The previous reports stated that Universal pushed the release date back to allow Damon to take part.
He said: "It's simply not true. [Director] Justin Lin is working with Andrew Baldwin on an Aaron Cross script/story that they pitched us a few months ago. I talk to Justin all the time and the script is not ready. It's a summer movie, and if we don't start preproduction now, we can't make next summer. Therefore, it's a wise decision to move to 2016."
Damon has said he wouldn't return unless Paul Greengrass was directing. He directed 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. When he had problems with screenwriter Tony Gilroy, he left The Bourne Legacy and Gilroy took over as director. The film, which starred Jeremy Renner, earned $276 million worldwide. This was a huge drop from Ultimatum, which earned $443 million worldwide.
