UPDATE: Guillermo Del Toro posted a video making the official announcement of Pacific Rim 2, which you can see below:
ORIGINAL: It's one more time into the breach for the Jaegers. Variety reports that Universal has greenlit Pacific Rim 2 with Guillermo Del Toro back to direct again. The film is set for a April 7th, 2017 release date.
The first film, which saw Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi star as a pilot team of a giant mechanized "Jaeger" joining an international force of mechs battling giant kaiju who had crossed over to our dimension from a rift in the Pacific Ocean, released last summer. The $190 million-budgeted film disappointed stateside with just $101.8 million but was a big hit overseas, finishing out with a $411.9 million gross.
Del Toro was bullish about a sequel and earlier this month he confirmed that he was writing the script. He had said that he was working with Zak Penn "in secret," adding, "We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film] was involved in the storyline and now I'm writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul." Legendary CEO Thomas Tull had said the studio was open to a new entry in the film as well.
"I'm going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle," Del Toro had added, saying, that Raleigh (Hunnam) and Mako (Kikuchi) were in the script for the sequel.
