Deadline reports that executive producer Mario Kassar (Terminator, Rambo and Basic Instinct) is putting together an English-language version of Audition. The story was originally a 1997 novel by Japanese author Ryu Murakami and was adapted in 1999 into a film by Takashi Miike. The new film will be based on the novel and will move the story to an American setting. Richard Gray (The Lookalike) will direct.
The film follows Sam Davis, a man who is convinced by a filmmaker to hold fake auditions to find a new love interest seven years after the death of his wife. He lives alone with his son. He falls in love with a former ballerina with a "mysterious past" named Evie Lawrence. Gray adapted the script and will shoot in the fall after his finishes the thriller Sugar Mountain (starring Jason Momoa).
