He says he didn't steal the idea...
James Franco has filed a response to a lawsuit claiming that he stole the idea for his upcoming film Bukowski. TMZ reports that Cyril Humphris sued Franco over the film, which is about the life of fiction writer Charles Bukowski. Humphris claims that in 2009 he gave Franco the right to draft a script based on Bukowski's autobiography, which Humphris owns the rights to. According to Humphris, the option on those rights expired in 2010 but Franco moved ahead with the film, which he is directing and will release this year.
Franco's response is asking for dismissal of the suit, saying that he was inspired by Bukowski's writings and had nothing to do with the autobiography. He claims that he independently came up with the idea for the film. Josh Peck, Keegan Allen, Shannon Doherty and Alex Kingston are starring in the film.
