The new female lead role comes from the comics...
In the wake of Lucy Griffith's character being written out of Constantine, the show has cast a new female lead...and this one comes from the comic book source. TV Line reports that the executive producers revealed during the TCA summer press tour today that Angélica Celaya (Dallas, Burn Notice) will play the role.
In the comic books, Zed (real name Mary Martin) is an artist who helps Constantine rescue his niece from an occultist who collects child brides. She becomes a love interest for Constantine and joins his fight against evil.
Speaking about the exit of Griffith's character Lucy, producer Daniel Cerone said, "Pilots are great because they're a bit of a litmus test, we get to figure out what works and what doesn't … Liv is a great character, she's wide-eyed, she's reactive, [but] we felt a bit hamstrung by her, frankly." One scene from the pilot episode will be reshot in order to explain Liv's departure.
It's not the first time changes have been made from a pilot by any stretch. Notably, Game of Thrones reshot much of the original pilot and recast the role of Daenerys from Tamzin Merchant to Emilia Clarke. Several other shows have made similar adjustments.
