New Photo Reveals Hero Of Halo: Nightfall
Posted by Joseph Lee on 07.22.2014

Variety reports that Xbox has released the first photo of Agent Locke, who will be the star of the digital series Halo: Nightfall and will be featured in the video game Halo 5: Guardians (released in 2015 for the Xbox One). He will be played by Mike Colter (The good Wife, Zero Dark Thirty) in the series. Locke is an agent of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), whose team is setn to investigate potential terrorist activity on a distant colony world. They are eventually drawn to "an ancient, hellish artifact". Locke is a new character in the series.

Halo: Nightfall will be directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (Falling Skies, Battlestar Galactica) from a script by Paul Scheuring (Prison Break). Colter said the script was "incredibly gripping. It introduces an intriguing and mysterious world that I wanted to know more about."

This isn't the first live action digital series from Xbox based on Halo, as it also produced Halo: Forward Unto Dawn (directed by Stewart Hendler). Ridley Scott will produce Nightfall through Scott Free Productions, along with 343 Industries and Xbox Entertainment Studios, the in-house production arm that Microsoft created to save money.

Colter said that playing a character in a series based on a video game "was a new medium for me." He added: "Who would the audience be? How would they access the series? Fortunately, ensuring accessibility to a broad audience is one of the things that Scott Free TV and 343 values first and foremost. Not only does ‘Halo: Nightfall' cater to the hardcore ‘Halo' fans, but it's also designed so newcomers to the franchise, like me, can easily enter the ‘Halo' universe, identify with the characters and be entertained by the story being told on screen."

Xbox will debut this series in the fall on Xbox Live (through Xbox One and Xbox 360) and Microsoft's mobile devices like smartphones and the Surface tablet. It will also be packaged with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which features remastered versions of the previous games, on the Xbox One on November 11.

The series will get an hour-long panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday at 11:45 AM. 343 executive producer Kiki Wolfkill and Halo development director Frank O'Connor will be on hand to talk about the project with Colter. Footage will also be screened for those in attendance.

Colter also praised how the series was shot like a movie. He said: "When I first heard of the project it was presented as a film that would then later be edited into chapters. So in almost every way it is a film. The only difference is that it will be released in segments. My favorite experience thus far would be shooting a scene in Belfast where I'm chasing an enemy who poses a serious threat to the people Agent Locke has sworn to protect through the city. The scene is an action-packed sequence that involves some cool special effects and a lot of coordination with the stunt team to fulfill the director's vision. I can't wait to see how it turns out."

Microsoft also has a separate series being produced by Steven Spielberg. That series, along with Nightfall and the Master Chief Collection, were announced at E3 in June.
