Behind Godzilla and Transformers...
Coming Soon reports that Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy opened to $37.8 milion, which gives it the third-highest opening day of the year behind Godzilla and Transformers: Age of Extinction. The film earned $11.2 million on Thursday night. [411's review of Guardians of the Galaxy]
Marvel's other 2014 movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, earned $10.2 million on Thursday before a $36.9 million opening day and a $95 million opening weekend. It was released on April 4. Other similar movies to open big this year include Legendary and Warner Bros' Godzilla (May 16 - $9.3 million Thursday, $38.4 million opening day, $93.2 million weekend), Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2 - $8.1 million Thursday, $35.2 million opening day, $91.6 million weekend), 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past (May 23 - $8.1 million Thursday, $35.5 million opening day, $90.8 million three-day weekend) and Paramount's Transformers: Age of Extinction (June 27 - $8.8 million Thursday, $41.9 million opening day, $100 million three-day weekend)
The film currently has an A on CinemaScore and better reviews than several of the movies listed above. It should end up making around $95 million for the weekend although a $100 million opening isn't impossible. Marvel's doing very well this year as Captain America: The Winter Soldier is currently the highest-grossing film of the year domestically with $258 million.
Guardians was directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. It's expected to get the biggest August weekend ever. That record is currently held by Universal's The Bourne Ultimatum with $70 million.
