The first to cross the mark this year...
Paramount Pictures officially announced that Transformers: Age of Extinction has passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. While domestic audiences appear to be tiring of the franchise, as the latest sequel has only made $242 million in North America, the audience for the films appears to be growing exponentially overseas.
Age of Extinction has made over $300 million from China alone.
Speaking on the announcement Paramount Chairman and CEO Brad Grey stated: "Time and again, Michael has delivered pictures that audiences around the globe truly love. Along with the immensely talented and versatile Mark Wahlberg, the great Steven Spielberg as executive producer, and a superb cast, he created a powerful re-launch of this franchise. This tremendous accomplishment – to be the first film of 2014 to earn over $1 billon at the box office – proves once again that Michael is a world-class filmmaker at the top of his game."
