James Gunn Knows Who Star-Lord's Father is For Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 08.12.2014

Warning: Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy (and a pseudo-spoiler for the sequel) follow.

James Gunn has dropped a couple of new details over one of the big questions from Guardians of the Galaxy: who is Peter Quill's father? The question was teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy and Gunn says that a couple people have known for a while.

Speaking with Empire Online, Gunn said that the identity of Star-Lord's father is known only to "a select two or three of us." He added that they figured out who the father was before filming began, saying, "We wanted to make sure Yondu's place in everything made sense and it does, so it's all very specific stuff."

Gunn said people who know Quill in the comic book should expect to be surprised, noting, "It's definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I'll say that much."

What does this mean? Well, in the comic books Peter's father is J'son of Spartax, the king of the alien (but human-looking) Spartoi Empire. J'son had crashed on Earth and had a relationship with Peter's mother before leaving the planet. Peter and J'son have a distinctly adversarial relationship, with Peter rejecting his father's entreaties to join him and recently even causing him to be dethroned.

Gunn added that Thanos may not factor into Guardians 2 much, saying, "He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that's for damn sure. There's the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos."

He added that Nebula was Thanos' "sweetest" daughter, saying, "which tells you what his kids are like..."

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theatres on July 28, 2016.
