The Vampire Lestat Targets Josh Boone to Direct
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 08.18.2014

As previously reported, Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles and is planning on rebooting the series. At the time it was reported that a completed script for the fourth novel, Tale of the Body Thief, was included in the deal but no mention was made as to whether it would start the franchise or lie in wait for its time. Now The Wrap has more details and it appears that Universal will start out at the most logical starting point: The Vampire Lestat.

According to the site, Universal is planning to base the first film on that second book in the series, with elements of Queen of the Damned as well. The studio is targeting The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone for the film, both to direct and to write the screenplay for. This would imply that the plot elements of the first novel, Interview with the Vampire, will be largely left behind or delayed for a sequel. The latter would be more difficult as Interview takes place chronologically within the context of The Vampire Lestat with a contradictory tale of the plot events, representing the difference between Louis and Lestat's perspectives.

The film is being produced by Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Boone will complete his work on the planned adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand before tackling Lestat.
