Posted by Ashish on 06.04.2008

Director Guillermo del Toro recently spoke with IGN about when the lead role in The Hobbit.

When asked if James McAvoy had been cast as Bilbo Baggins, del Toro said no.

"Not yet. Not yet James McAvoy, not yet Jack Black, or Daniel Radcliffe. There's nothing to fear or celebrate yet."

He added that the announcement will be made around Christmas.

"In six months time we should know. We will try to give that casting news at Christmas as a gift."

It definatly should be James McAvoy. He is perfect for the part of Bilbo. I really couldn't see anyone else playing that role.

my girl and i did a cast of this movie awhile back, kind of like wizard magazine use to do. its odd that mcavoy was our original pick for bilbo, and he's such an obscure name. especially when we picked him. with serkis and mckellan back in their roles, the only character i'm really excited about is "Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! fal lal the willow!
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!"

If they cast Radcliff or Black... I riot.

i always thought they would have Ian Holm reprise the role, but McAvoy would be a great choice

They should totally cast Jack Black and have Tenacious D make the soundtrack to the whole movie.

EPIC SUCCESS!!!

as crazy as tenacious hobbit sounds it would still be awesome hehe.

as long as radcliffe isn't cast i'm happy. he;s already ruined one franchise with his shitty acting, no reason to do it to another.

and mcavoy really is almost the perfect choice for the role and if he isn't cast it really would be a shame.

Jack Black as Bilbo - No. But Jack Black as a Bombur the fat dwarf? Why not, that could be good. McAvoy would be great as Bilbo but there is no way del Toro will cast Radcliffe.

I don't see why Sir Ian Holm can't play Bilbo, especially given "The Hobbit" flashback in "Fellowship"...I thought Holm looked believable for a just-found-the-ring-aged Bilbo. Besides, the ring slowed Bilbo's aging process, so the Bilbo at the beginning of "Fellowship" would look nearly the same age as the Bilbo in "The Hobbit." Casting a much younger actor as Bilbo instead of Holm would be problematic for me and others wishing to view "The Hobbit" and the "Rings" films as an unified whole.
