[Movies] The Riddler Could Be Main Villain In Next Batman Movie
Posted by Ashish on 07.03.2008

The original plan was to have The Joker return in the next Batman film following The Dark Knight, but with the death of Heath Ledger, that will no longer happen.

Apparently the plan now is to have The Riddler be the top villain. Jim Carrey played The Riddler in Batman Forever.

Actor Gary Oldman, however, says the role of The Joker should be recast.

"I don't see why not. I mean, they did it with Katie Holmes' character. I understand that this is a different circumstance, but I think another actor could do the job. I think Heath would want another actor to do the job. Maybe we don't need the Joker. Because we'll have The Riddler."

Um...couldn't this be seen as a bit spoiler for The Dark Knight?

They need Jon Lovitz to play the part of the Riddler or if not him, Jeff Goldblum would at least be cool.

Posted By: ALEC BALDWIN (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 05:15 PM

I think Paul Bettany would be great to play either the Joker or the Riddler.

Posted By: Eek (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 05:16 PM

Even though I was kind of against it at first, the Joker is a character as such where they might be able to recast the character and have him be a little different, but they shouldn't recast if the actor is just going to do a imitation of what was done with the character in TDK.

Carrey's Riddler was just too damn goofy. Though I could see them going that character but done right.

i don't think you can replace ledger's joker.

Posted By: Guest#0445 (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 05:32 PM

What happened to Two Face? they can't use the Riddler because it makes more sense to develope the Riddler/Eddy Nigma character which I'm sure Nolan would do in the first place. If Chris Nolan is worried about making a sequel the isn't as good as DK or BB replacing the Joker isn't the way to go.

Posted By: Oldman shut up (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 05:40 PM

I thought they setting up Two Face to be the main villian in the third movie. Unless they want to go with two major villians. I'd rather see them not recast the Joker. The Riddler is a good choice. Hopefully they'll base the character off TAS where he was more menacing and not a Joker clone like in the Adam West show. The Riddler is more of an intellectual foe for Batman, letting him show off his detective skills more than his fighting skills.

"Um...couldn't this be seen as a bit spoiler for The Dark Knight?"

I guess, if you're saying it's a spoiler that the Joker doesn't die...but then again, Batman doesn't kill either, so...

David Tennant for The Riddler.

I would be considered a spoiler, if you were an idiot.

lol I read "The Joker should be racist" at first

I do think we should have some bad guy overlap, since one of the things I wasn't a huge fan of from the original movies was that they got rid of the baddies every single time

in the comics those fuckers are EVERYWHERE

I'm a terrible actor anyways. Now i'm a bowel obstruction for a family of worms.

Posted By: heith ledger (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 07:18 PM

The Joker not dying isn't a spoiler, as it's no secret that the people involved in this film acknowledge the huge mistake which was killing the Joker in the Burton series.

I thought Two-Face was the default Part 3 Villain, as well. I hope they don't make the mistake we saw in Spider-Man 3 and turn him at the end, letting him fight Batman for all of 10 minutes, a la Venom.

A: How did that last comment get through?

B: You will eat those words after you watch the best preformance of the year.

Heres some good casting ideas for the riddler=

-Gene Hackman
-Al Pachino
-Rosie Odonald

OH. MY. GOD.

They should cast Tom Cruise as the Riddler!!!

Posted By: Leo (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 09:09 PM

RIDDLER = WIll FERRELL!!!!!

haha just kidding

Posted By: jcon (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 09:13 PM

This isn't a spoiler. They had been saying long before Ledger died that the Joker would be in the third movie (if it was made).

Posted By: Guest#4718 (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 09:36 PM

two face isnt being used as a straight up villain. hes acting as a vigilante hunting down criminals after the whole two face thing. kinda like the punisher.

Posted By: matt (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 10:05 PM

Dude why the Riddler bring back The Penguin!!! that is the real villian I want to see.

Posted By: lewi87 (Registered)  on July 03, 2008 at 10:23 PM

they should just make a movie about Batman kicking Spidermans ass.

Posted By: Litas Biggest Fan (Guest)  on July 03, 2008 at 11:22 PM

I'm all new to these two new Batman movies but not Batman movies in general. TDK looks simply amazing and BB looks to be pretty good itself. If this is starting over the Batman series and the joker is just being introduced does this mean that they could still introduce the penguin, the riddler, two-face, and Mr. Freeze in the future?

Posted By: knockout (Registered)  on July 03, 2008 at 11:27 PM

GOD DAMN IT! I was looking forward towards seeing harley quinn. Just re-cast the mofo with Mark Hamill as Joker. Mark IS the real joker, IMO.

Jim Carrey doesn't reprise roles anymore. Shame, because I'd like to see him in a batman movie that didn't suck.

if they dont make him like the jim cerry riddlet but moe the one in the animated series of the death traps like the evil guy from saw and throw in the gothicness of the riddler in THe Batman series it would be kickass i think ethier david hyde perce or the other fraiser guy (the actual fraiser he played beast in X 3 wat was his name

Meg Ryan being single again > The Dark Knight!!

Posted By: Guest#3213 (Guest)  on July 04, 2008 at 02:23 AM

I agree with Eek. Paul Bettany is a highly underrated actor and would do The Riddler justice. He and Ledger worked together on A Knights Tale so maybe giving Paul the Joker would be a bit wierd.

Posted By: CM Wolf (Guest)  on July 04, 2008 at 03:02 AM

That would be Kelsey Grammer. I wouldn't mind Harley Quinn showing up in a Batman movie, as long as she's super psychotic and looking to murder batman, not kiss him, haha. Brings back fond memories of Batman: The Animated Series, a show I badly want on DVD.

Posted By: RavenTazECW (Registered)  on July 04, 2008 at 03:36 AM

Guy Pierce as the Riddler! He has a history with Nolan, so that would be my top pick.

What about Penguing?

Posted By: Kinnikuman (Guest)  on July 04, 2008 at 07:54 AM

I don't think this is much of a spoiler at all. After they did the first franchise of Batman everyone said they made the hugest mistake by killing off the Joker in the first movie. The joker was a long running charactor in batman. It would be foolish to make the same mistake a second time.

Posted By: Stuart C (Guest)  on July 04, 2008 at 08:44 AM

If they do use the RIddle in the second i hope they make him a lot more sinister and use a more detective batman than they did with Jim Carrey as the Riddler.. The one thing i have loved about the new batman franchise is its dark not the campy like the adam west ,michael keaton, val kilmer, Cheesy george clooney version.. Keep the riddler dark and mysterious not a total goofball.

Let's throw a little horror in the whole mix and bring in the Man Bat for the third installment.

Posted By: swoltz (Guest)  on July 04, 2008 at 09:24 AM

In keeping with the tone of this series, I'd like to see the Riddler played in a darker vein than the Jim Carey portrayal. That said, there is no finer actor for this part than Michael Emerson, aka Benjamin Linus from "Lost".

The problem with casting another actor as the Joker in the next film is that everyone is going to shit all over him because of Ledger's performance. People are talking Oscar for Heath, so expectations for the Joker will be very high and if he does not live up to it, it will doom the film as well. Critics are very harsh.

Christopher Walken as the riddler.... simply amazing!

Posted By: Perfection (Guest)  on July 04, 2008 at 12:48 PM

I hope in the fourth installment of the series they bring in Mr. Freeze!

Posted By: knockout (Registered)  on July 04, 2008 at 01:36 PM

in the comics, joker re-creates himself several times over the years. this was always an aspect of the character. to use a new actor could be done fairly easily with this as the "explanation" for different mannerisms, and different look, which i'd assume is what they'd do if they kept joker going. they'd probably steer clear of copying ledger's take on the character. the possible backlash of doing something like that makes it seem unlikely that they actually would keep joker for a third nolan batman. insofar as riddler, i think steve bushemi, doing an OCD kind of method act would be a great take on the character. IMO

Joker won't die, thats taken as a given - but he should probably end up in the newly refurbished (by Wayne Enterprises) Arkham Asylum, as Two-Face starts his vigilante bit - which should segue into the next film, with another villain coming to the fore, be it the Riddler, the Penguin, Catwoman or whoever.

My vote would be for the Riddler, who can be seen as a direct evolution from the Joker anyway - he also contrasts nicely with the more muscular Two-Face. I'd agree with David Tennant, or Paul Bettany as the Riddler too.

Maybe then introduce Catwoman, or an Arkham Asylum psychoanaklyst who cklaims to be getting through the Joker - leading to Batman Version 2.0 - film four, where this gullible girl, ala Harley Quinn bust the Joker free, and thats a whole new adventure, with a much changed Joker.

I like that arc, its more true to the comics, and the real world as well. The villains shouldnt die, only the sidekicks - good villains keep coming back for more, because Batman NEEDS them.

Where can I read the comics and just sit and read while keeping track of my nascar.

John Malkovich should play the riddler. Demented, yet intellectual as anyone

Hate to rain on your collective parade, but Nolan has already been asked about the Penguin and has said he wouldn't do the charater. I don't remember the exact quote but basically he felt the Penguin was one of the stranger Batman villains and didn't feel he fit with his vision of the movies. Of course we all know how things change in Hollywood so take it for what you will.

The Riddler is my favorite villain. He must be darker and he can't crack stupid jokes like Carrey. He should be a cyber terrorist that make Gotham turn on Batman by making it look like he's been committing the crimes the Riddlers "thugs" have been committing. Under the alias of "The Riddler", Edward Nigma ,a web site designer and programmer, should hire grunts to perform elaborate crimes under his orders. He would leave Batman a riddle that would lead him to the scene of the crime where the Riddler would have set it up to make it appear as if Batman committed the crime. He could record this false batman footage and send it to the media as The Riddler. This would continue several times until Gotham eventually turns on Batman. Bruce decides Gotham does not want Batman or Bruce Wayne anymore and hangs up both identities. Thinking he has gotten rid of The Batman, Edward Nigma comes out from behind his computer screen to show the public that he is the Riddler. Thanks to his tricks, the media and people view him as a hero. He is in a seat of power and popularity in the public's eye but all the while is pulling all the strings of Gotham's underworld. As Gotham slips even further into dissaray than ever before. Bruce brings Batman back to face the Riddler in an ultimate battle of wits where Batman is viewed as the villain. In the end of course, he tricks the Riddler into admitting he performed the crimes and framed Batman. Now the city turns on Nigma/Riddler and he is sent to jail. Strangely enough I can only view one man in this role and it is an under control Robin Williams.

they should cast Michael Emerson as the riddler

Posted By: Guest#1315 (Guest)  on July 19, 2008 at 05:11 AM

I dont think there is anyone that can follow in Ledger's shoes. He played the perfect Joker. I heard that the Riddler will be the next villian and will possibly be played by Matthew Lillard. I think he would do a good job.

Posted By: k*hol (Guest)  on July 22, 2008 at 10:44 PM

I think it would be neat to have one character played by the same person. I think that Jim Carrey can play The Riddler again, and even darker than the first time.

they should cast jony depp as the next joker, i bet he wont let us down.... and still have the ridler come out, that would be the scariest movie

Posted By: mario fernandez (Guest)  on July 25, 2008 at 01:27 AM

without the return of the joker what is the point, no doubt the riddler is next best

I heard if they bring in Riddler that Jonnny Depp is up for the job
