[Movies] Superman Still Not Going Anywhere

Warner Bros. not sure on direction...
Variety reports that the next Superman movie remains in question as Warner Bros. struggles to figure out a direction for the franchise.
They too believe that the last movie didn't break the mold and wound up in some kind of middle limbo. Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project. There are no writers working on a Superman script now. The studio wants to figure it out. "It might be better to start from scratch," one exec admitted.
Well, they re-did the Hulk. A re-do for Superman could prove that this franchise still has some legs.

Shoulda stuck with X-Men 3, budday.

I still say Let Singer do his thing. He has promised to go "All Wrath of Khan" on this one.

the dark knight set the bar way too high for the man of steel. they have to reevaluate what to do.
if it was up to me. i would make the man of steel a complete opposite of TDK in every way, bright, colorful, kid friendly, very very far fetch with a villian like myxtpyk or lobo.
the third movie for both franchises will be the "world's finest." it will make the meeting of the two that more monumental as their movies were complete contrasts.

HELL NO! Don't start from scratch. Superman Returns was a great way to bring back the Superman franchise, now it's time to introduce other villains that can fight Superman!
Posted By: Guest#7805 (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 01:36 PM
hopefully the decide to use a real, you know, super villian in the next movie. metallo, darkside, bizzaro, lobo. that would be a hell of a good movie. luthor is great and all but there are so many optionsfor a killer blockbuster movie from this.

Here's a direction: send it away. Done. Superman was, is, and always will be the most boring, unrelateable character in the history of comics.

They need to reboot this. Nobody wants a rehash of Christopher Reeves' That's like Christopher Nolan casting some Michael Keaton look-alike in Batman Begins and playing it off like its the old franchise.
That PROBABLY wouldn't have gone well.
They need to go back to the comics, and make a NEW Superman, based on the one we know from the comics. Why is that so hard??
And for the love of GOD, no Super-baby! WTF were they thinking?? WB/DC need to stop pissing on the comic fans. Let the death of Rachel Dawes be the start of it.
Posted By: C (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 02:24 PM
man of steel should have lobo, metallo, parasite etc as a villian or villians. non-stop action from start to finish. they told the story in returns. with that done already, you now have room for more fights and rescues.
Posted By: jd (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 02:56 PM
The problem is that you really can't humanize the Superman character, and when they tried that it didn't work so well.
At this rate the best thing to do would be to have a World's Finest movie. How much more do they really need to go into Batman's past, or the interaction between Superman and Lois Lane? Been there, done that.
At least with a WF movie you will satisfy enough of the hardcore fanboys with another Batman movie appearance while somewhat saving the Superman franchise.

Its just the same thing with superman. its hard to be "shocking" anymore. Every superman movie is this:
1)Superman beats up bad guy
2)Bad guy gets his hand on kryptonite
3)Bad guy weakens and beats up superman
4)Superman over comes the kryptonite to beat up bad guy
Superman Returns was pure trash. IF they do another one, as most of you said, use an actual SUPER villian. One who "packs a punch"...and could actually fight superman one on one.
Posted By: Nelson (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Superman Returns was fine. They should just move on to the next story. Superman 775 from the comics with Manchester Black as the villian is the way to go!

From what I heard from people who worked on the first movie, Kevin Spacey was a total diva on-set. Bryan Singer, on the other hand, was pretty much an asshole to everyone. If they do another movie, WB should find a new director, someone who shows respect & appreciation for his crew.

Bryan Singer is the reason it fucking flopped !
All he did was wash , rinse , repeat- a spit out the same superman he watched as a kid ! Everyone could see it ! Hell he even gave interviews while filming , he was recreating his past !!
Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther sucked !
The storyline was gay ! and what was with the 1940's way of dressing mixed in with 1960's/170's family vehicles ?
Yet they had lex dressed in mid to late 80's with a 2000 yachts !
the back drop , storyline and graphics were truly horrible !
a FUCKING ISLAND ! REALLY !?? REALLY ??

doomsday ol' supes. kill him off. have four spin-off movies with Cyborg Supes, Eridicator Supes, SuperBoy Supes and Steel Supes. Then bring back the real supes in a real returns with long hair and a pont tail.
Posted By: squirrel master (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 05:27 PM
gotta agree with MattL post...superman is just waaaaaayyyyyy too boring and unrelateable a character.
the only movie that superman would be a good character in is a jla movie or something co-staring batman.
but, superman alone.......sucks.

"One Word-Smallville"
Another two words- is shit.
Posted By: Quinny (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 06:06 PM
get rid of Bryan Singer is a start
Posted By: ceelo (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 06:54 PM
Keep Routh...but give him some balls. Do the Darkside/Superman dead angle. Nick Cage as Sup-baby = EPIC FUCK UP.
Posted By: fredtheimpaler (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 07:34 PM
BRING BACK ZOD!!!...a SUPER evil Zod! It's not like you really saw him die in Superman 2.
Posted By: swoltz (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 07:35 PM
Smallville is not Superman. When in the comics do you find Superman is some prettyboy who has all kinds of ladies wanting him? You dont, he's a freaking geek like Spiderman. I dont see how so many "true" Superman fans have been doped into thinking that Buffy... I mean Smallville is the crap.
Dont get me wrong, its a solid show, but it is NOT the REAL Superman that everyone makes it out to be.
Bryan Singer Superman is much closer to that. It made 200 million and had good reviews (72% positive at rotten tomatoes) and frankly people were trashing it months before it came out because people were just determined that a straight laced hero like Superman sucked no matter how good or how close to the real thing it isbefore hand, unless it was made into Clark and a scooby gang going around fighting monsters in Sunnydale... I mean Smallville
Posted By: Chris (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 07:47 PM
Not Smallville exactly but using the Smallville actors and somehow bringing the story to a Superman timeline. The guy that plays Clark would play Superman well.
Superman was not a geek, Clark Kent was. In Smallville, he has no reason to play a geek but he would have to play one in Metropolis.
I thought Bryan Singer's Superman sucked. He made Superman gay. Where in the comics is Superman ever gay? The movie was pointless in my opinion.

Ignore "Returns" and plant the seed for a Darkseid descent on Earth. I would use Mongul, Parasite, AND Lobo in the next film and bring in Wonder Woman to rival Supes' love interest and to help kick butt.
That's the approach they have to take OR ELSE Superman has to go on hiatus (10 years at least) for a build up to a successful reboot. I think the Hulk was in the same place and a relaunch would have been even better if it were further removed from Ang Lee's. They can avoid this mis step with Superman and they should do a Smallville/Batman Begins type deal and tweak Supes' origin in a retelling if they start over.
Singer did a lot of damage in his pseudo nostalgia act.

superman returns was a disappointment. it really sucked the life out of me. i don't blame the studio for not knowing were to go. maybe a batman type deal is need even thought superman just kinda came back
Posted By: duff1462 (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 09:05 PM
Superman is a solid franchise, but they've yet to find a movie (or a TV show) that really captures what the character could be when everything is on all cylinders.
The Christopher Reeve movies were solid enough, although full of diminishing returns.
Smallville was also pretty fun, but as others have stated--not really Superman.
My favorite take on the characters was Lois & Clark--or at least the first couple of seasons. IMO, that show really got the feeling of the comics of the time, with Clark as the real character and Superman as the hero.
Posted By: Michael L (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 09:44 PM
you know they even screwed up the superman/doomsday dvd movie so what makes me think they can get a live movie right? Bring on Green Lantern! That will be the next iron man because they won;t have to cater to the mainstream expectations

Adapt the SUPERMAN: RED SON comic into a movie, that would be an amazing piece of cinema.
Posted By: Pyotor (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Use Brainiac! Brainiac is a being that has knowledge from across the universe. have him take over all the computer and technology systems on earth in his efforts to capture Supes. That would be an epic battle for the Man of Steel.
Posted By: Phoenix_Firebird (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 12:03 AM
Stop making Lex, Superman's greatest enemy, such a bumbling comic relief idiot! You don't need Darkseid (although he is my favorite arch) or Braniac. Lex is iconic evil in the comics. Why is he such a dofus in the movies?
Man, that just pisses me off.
Posted By: Eric L (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 12:10 AM
I say just get rid of Luthor altogether. He may be Supes' most iconic villain but he has also been used way too much and made the series very boring.
Posted By: bluedragonx (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 01:05 AM
Brainiac would be a good choice. It would be one hell of a Mind vs Matter battle.
"if it was up to me. i would make the man of steel a complete opposite of TDK in every way, bright, colorful, kid friendly, very very far fetch with a villian like myxtpyk or lobo."
The only person who has ever made Mxylprick anywhere near interesting was Alan Moore (in "Whatever Happened to The Man of Tommorrow?"), so I don't see that working. Oh, and I wouldn't class Lobo as kid friendly.

You CAN humanize Superman....make the movie based on the first Doomsday arc. hav

Superman Returns blew more chunks than Tara Reid on a Las Vegas weekend.

Superman VS Mike Adamle !!!
Posted By: Newlydeads (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Just make a movie about us and everything will be fine.
signed: Ultraman,Superwoman,Owlman,Johhny Quick and Power Ring.
Posted By: Crime Syndicate of America (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 10:43 AM
The problem with Superman Returns is Singer made a whole trilogy with one movie and ruined a sequel by doing the following...
Superman comes back.He has a child. Lex builds a whole kryptonite continent. Lex stabs Superman with kryponite, Superman still comes back and takes a whole kryptonite planet(the only thing that can hurt him), and flies it into space, and almost dies as a result.
That's alot of things to happen in a movie that was meant to be a franchise.
And don't get me started about him being a stalker.

please stop asking for a new movie of my life. lois and l just want to be able to take a vacation in peace
Posted By: superman (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Even if a new movie is made, and Routh returns as Superman, I'm really hoping the costume gets changed. The one in Returns sucked.
Purple/ maroon cape, small, plastic "S" shield, dumb looking boots... it sucked. Granted, Superman's costume will always look a little off no matter who is wearing it, but Chistopher Reeve's Superman costume (or even Gerard Christopher's costume from the "Superboy" TV series for that matter) looked like something that was taken from the pages of a comic and it worked perfectly.
I'm surprised there hasn't been any bitching about how boring Lois Lane was in Superman Returns. Margot Kidder's Lois had attitude, Teri Hatcher's Lois had attitude and sex appeal, but Kate Bosworth's Lois was, in a word, bland.
Posted By: Zing Wong (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 01:25 PM
just do one without Lex Luthor, and give a bit of depth to the characters.
Posted By: kevnb (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 03:25 PM
Superman 2 - Death of Superman/ Doomsday angle
Superman 3 - Superman comes back and Lex Luthor is President
Posted By: Guest#3312 (Guest) on August 20, 2008 at 06:27 PM
I only want to see the following:
Superman vs. Darkseid
Superman vs. Doomsday
Superman vs. Shao Kahn
That's all you need for the next movie. EPIC FISTFIGHT!
