[Movies] Gordon-Levitt Talks G.I. Joe
Posted by Ashish on 09.11.2008

Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently spoke with MTV about his role in G.I. Joe. He confirmed that he would be playing the man who becomes Cobra Commander in the Stephen Sommers-directed film.

"The cool thing about my character was that it's not that digital," the Stop-Loss and Brick actor revealed. "I get to put hours of prosthetic makeup on and see a different creature altogether. I've seen how he looks and it's really cool."

He added that the voice and costume of the character won't be exactly like the comics or cartoon.

"I think it maintains the spirit of it and all the fun, but it brings the character into three dimensions. It wouldn't look good if you did an exact replica of the cartoon. You wouldn't want me wearing a skin-tight bright-blue dictator's uniform. It would look silly."

The film opens August 7th, 2009.

And that is exactly the kind of comment that ruins movie adaptations. All these people who make remakes about cartoons and comics and whatever else, that look back on the original source material as "silly" or too unrealistic should just come up with an original idea of their own and make it as edgy and believable as they want it. I know let's do a Denver the last Dinosaur movie. But not silly. He'll eat all the kids in the high school. And then he'll get put down by the army.

Ima wait for all the geeks to complain about Tommy from 3rd rock playing Cobra Commander

"It wouldn't look good if you did an exact replica of the cartoon."

Ok, maybe the skin-tight bright-blue dictator's uniform would look a bit silly, but you could update it some. Also, Hooded Cobra Commander would work great.

wow...

...i love how the whiny fanboys are first to come out and bitch and moan about something they haven't even seen yet.

of course, according to them, this is going to 'ruin the movie' and not the fact that it is based on the cheesy, kid friendly TOY CARTOON AND COMICS!!!

in the end, this is a live action movie based on a cartoon from the 1980's, and thisw isn't anything that anyone should take seriously enough to complain about before the fucking thing is even through the editing process.

seriously, get a life.

The only difference between this and Transformers is that movie had a July 4th release and made bank! Who really wants to see a GI Joe movie?

why don't they put a body actor in the makeup and the use the actors voice? a body actor will be able to convey alot more though movement then the kid could.

and i do agree about the costumes. i mean some people actually think it's still a good idea for hugh jackman to be running around in bright yellow.

if he's in a mask or makeup, who gives a $hit who plays Cobra Commander.
My concern is why not make him look like the old school CC.

Grimlock78....It's Dino the last Dinosaur!

There's only one thing I'll bitch about...the voice not sounding similar? I know Tony Latta, the original voice actor is dead, but surely they can get close to that voice. It's a trademark of the character!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is great. If (and I'm not saying it should) the Batman franchise decides to recast The Joker, he's easily my top choice for the part. Watch him in The Lookout and tell me he doesn't have mannerisms eerily similar to Ledger.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Yes the 1980s bulky, square cumbersome Transformers would have looked absolutely ridicolous on the big screen in CGI "real life" especially in the year 2007. Were the designs they did use the best, that is up to debate but they were leaps and bounds better looking than the cartoon versions. Nobody outside the 2,500 die hard TF fans would have bought a ticket if the robots looked like they did in a cartoon from the 1980s.

As for CC the hood and the helmet would work but that raspy, lisping voice is far too irritating and comical to be taken seriously.

i bet he's really Fred VII in a cobra commander battle suit.

Since when was CC's outfit skin tight? He wears a basic suit... Like ya know, generals and REAL dictators wear.

Posted By: Batman (Guest)  on September 11, 2008 at 01:31 PM

I think because the source material itself was rather silly, then the original costume, etc. wouldn't be that big of a deal. It's an over-the-top propaganda fluff piece for kids. That doesn't scream, "We've gotta be realistic!"

In some instances, it makes sense to stick with the source material. Do some fanboys go over the top with it? Sure. Is it justified in some cases because it makes the movie suck? Yeah. I don't think anyone's arguing about Schumacher's Bat Nipples, for example.

But who knows, could end up being for the best. Wait for the flick first, then critique.

"You wouldn't want me wearing a skin-tight bright-blue dictator's uniform. It would look silly"

Whatever you do it is going to look silly. Why not stay true to the original?

When will Hollywood learn that you CAN make a movie that stays true to the source material and be VERY successful? Uh Iron Man and the last 2 Batman films anyone?

Look at the X-Men(I've been reading X-men for 30 years, trust me the movies are trash), Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Superman Returns and Schumaker and Burton's Batman films- they all sucked hard.

This movie is going to be an insult to fans of the '80s GI Joe franchise. Fanboys, nerds or whatever you call us have every right to complain about the bastardization of hallowed franchises.

Get a life says the guy called Darth Mortis...OK buddy...did you complain about the Star Wars prequels?

Joseph Gordon Levitt doesn't know anything.

Cobra Commander NEVER wore skin tight leather outfits. He would wear a basic military general type of uniform. It wasn't skin tight it, more than likely had padded shoulders and everything.

So not feeling this movie.

I never owned a GI Joe or had interest in any Joe related paraphernalia but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the best young actors out there and I think it's great he finally has the lead in a big budget movie.

"Brick" was awesome, I think he can pull it off..but whats with hours of prostetics? Is he disfigured under the mask or something? Or a snake-man like in the animated movie?

Posted By: D (Guest)  on September 11, 2008 at 04:33 PM

well if you didn't see the other news, one of the creators said he didn't want to do the hood look for CC, since it was to KKK for him. These people want to take zero risks and Cobras proabably going to look like a bunch of bitches.

Posted By: kinaj (Guest)  on September 11, 2008 at 05:55 PM

Yeah, it wouldn't look good if you did an exact replica of the cartoon. That NEVER works. Just look at "Superman: The Movie." Bringing "the character into three dimensions" only brings you good movies, like "Speed Racer."

"Since when was CC's outfit skin tight? He wears a basic suit... Like ya know, generals and REAL dictators wear."

sorry...didn't mean to go TOO geek on you...but when Dr Mindbender was revived, he created skin tight body armour which was underneath a skin tight version of the early dictator's outfit.

sorry you weren't aware of that, it did happen in the last 50 issues of the marvel and the entire DDP run of the comic.

the cartoon is just too gay to try and add to any serious discussion of the movie.

DR I - i didn't complain at all about the Star Wars prequels simply because they were well executed, stayed to the established canon of the Star Wars universe, and aside from the same wooden acting you see in almost every movie these days, were entertaining.

if you really think that busting out Star Wars to try and undermine the fact that people are complaining about a kiddie cartoon and comic book adaptation not sticking to source material so as to make a shitty movie that three people will see as opposed to an entertaining one that could make its budget back is your perogative, but really just makes you look like you don't have any argument to make at all.

Darth Mortis, people like you are the reason all these re-makes suck, you have a watered down view on things, you see no value or respect for keeping things genuine to what they were. If they are considering doing a G.I.Joe movie after all these years there must have been something special about the cartoon the way that it was, why change it? It doesn't make sense to me. If it's too cheezy to make it a movie these days - then don't make it a movie.

If you can't appreciate things for what they are, they should be left alone instead of ruined.

"hours of prosthetic makeup" -- what f@%king character is he playing? Cobra Commander wore either A> a helmet or B> a hood.

Seeing Cobra Commander's face, now THAT would look silly.

I suppose Snake Eyes has a singing scene in the movie as well.

wow...

...i love how I've seen you in two comic book adaptation threads and both times you were slagging of the fans who want the films accurate to the source material. If you're not interested then fuck off. Nobody wants your opinion.
Now,you get a life.....seriously

in that vein, should we see members of the GI Joe team rolling through the desert in their arctic gear (snow job) or watch as Deep Six lumbers though a urban battle in his deep sea pressure suit?

what exactly won't ruin it? watching members of the GI Joe team in night time combat in their football jersey, or should we be kissing ass if The Fridge and Sgt. Slaughter show up?

and if the movie is based on the shitty cartoon show and not the actual comic, then we can expect a serpent faced cobra commander, a zartan that is a real shapeshifter and the 'awesomness' of watching red and blue laser blasts stunning everyone.

i don't think that people like me...who want to see these movies made in such a way as they become better than the source material...ruin the movies anymore than those who think that the god awful source material should be followed religiously.

the cartoon, as source material, will doom the movie to Razzie status without fail. if they stick to the comic, then it has a chance to be at least entertaining if not outright good.
