Weekend Box Office Report 10.14.02: Red Dragon Still #1, Plenty Of Debuts

Plenty of new debuts crack the top 10, with Red Dragon and Sweet Home Alabama remaining atop...
Red Dragon (click here for review), starring Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton, held on to the #1 spot at the box office this past Columbus Day weekend, earning $17.61 million ($5,235 per theater), a 52% drop from last week. That brings its total to $63.2 million in two weeks. It is expected to top the $100 million mark.
Sweet Home Alabama (click here for review), starring Reese Witherspoon, earned a strong $14.1 million ($4,256 per theater and a drop of 34% from last week), bringing its total to $85 million. It looks to be headed for $125 million in U.S. box office totals.
The urban romantic-comedy, Brown Sugar, debuted surprisingly well at #3 with $11.05 million. The movie had the highest per theater gross ($8,054 per theater) of any film this weekend.
The action film, The Transporter (click here for review), opened at #4 to a solid $9.15 million ($3,558 per theater).
The surprise hit of 2002, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, continued its amazing run, pulling in another $7.87 million ($3,902 per theater) to land at #5. It has earned an amazing $158.4 million and should hit the $175 million mark. It is the highest earning independent film in history.
The Tuxedo continues to do decently despite horrible reviews, earning $7 million at the #6 spot ($2,358 per theater). Its total is now $37 million.
White Oleander (click here for review) debuted at #7 with a somewhat disappointing $5.66 million ($3,745 per theater).
Disney's Tuck Everlasting (click here for review) came in at #8 with a disappointing $5.5 million ($4,658 per theater).
Knockaround Guys, the new vehicle for Vin Diesel, opened quitely to $5.04 million ($2,791 per theater) and finished at #9.
The urban comedy Barbershop rounded out the top 10 with $4 million ($2,093 per theater). It has earned a surprising $65.4 million so far, headed for $75 million.
The Rules of Attraction (click here for review) opened in limited release and was a big let down, earning $2.4 million ($1,678 per theater).
