Weekend Box Office Report 10.28.02: Jackass, Ghost Ship Make Strong Debuts

3 major debuts this week, MTV's Jackass surprising everyone by debuting #1, and The Ring improves in its 2nd week...
Believe it or not, MTV's Jackass: The Movie debuted at #1 this weekend, with a box office total of $22.7 million ($9,047 per theater). Jackass had the highest per-theater average of any film in wide release.
The horror/thriller, The Ring (click here for our review), fell to #2 in its second week but actually earned more money than its opening week, with a strong $18.8 million (an increase of 25%; $7,137 per theater). It earned $15 million last week (opening weekend). It has earned a total of $39.7 million.
Another horror movie, Ghost Ship, debuted at #3 with $11.7 million ($4,203 per theater).
Sweet Home Alabama (click here for our review) continues to show its holding power by coming in at #4 in its 4th week, earning $6.4 million (drop of 33%; $2,011 per theater). It has earned a total of $107.2 million and should top the $125 million mark in domestic theaters. It has become the 16th film to be released in 2002 to top $100 million.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding continued to surprise as it finished at #5 this week with another $6.3 million (12% drop; $3,211 per theater). It has now earned $177.8 million, headed for around $185 million in domestic theaters.
Red Dragon (click here for our review) fell to #6 this week with $4.7 million (46% drop). It has now earned $84.9 million and is expected to top $100 million.
Punch Drunk-Love (click here for our review), sparked by great reviews, expanded its release and earned $3.6 million ($7,277 per theater) to land in 7th place. It has earned a total of $6 million.
Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, came in at #8 with $2.9 million (26% drop; $1,785 per theater). It has earned $19.7 million now.
The Transporter (click here for our review) finished the week at #9 with another $2.8 million earned (44% drop; $1,513 per theater). It has earned a total of $21.5 million.
Brown Sugar rounded out the top 10 with $2.7 million (47% drop; $2,415 per theater). It has grossed a total of $22.3 million.
Other Notes:
-The Truth About Charlie opened at 752 theaters and earned $2.3 million ($3,105 per theater).
-Paid in Full opened at 268 theaters and earned a strong $1.4 million ($5,224 per theater).
