OneRepublic - Waking Up
Review by Daniel Wilcox

Ryan Tedder – vocals, piano
Zach Filkins – guitar
Drew Brown – guitar, bass
Brent Kutzle – bass
Eddie Fisher – drums

Track listing:
1. Made for You
2. All the Right Moves
3. Secrets
4. Everybody Loves Me
5. Missing Persons 1 & 2
6. Good Life
7. All This Time
8. Fear
9. Waking Up
10. Marchin’ On
11. Lullaby

Cast your mind back about two years. “Apologize” was inescapable, perhaps more thanks to the work of Timbaland than OneRepublic, but alas, the song put this band on the map in a big, big way. “Stop and Stare” was almost as big, and those two tracks alone caused the band’s debut Dreaming Out Loud to fly like hot cakes. Well now OneRepublic is back with its sophomore effort, and one that follows the same formula as its predecessor.

If fans were to judge this album purely on its merits however, you get the feeling that the fall of this band may be as quick as its rise. Lead single “All the Right Moves” is catchy enough, but its chorus simply isn’t that big and the tracks fails to resonate like the band’s aforementioned hits. The bigger problem though, is that that is one of the better songs on the album, until we get to the final couple of tracks that is. Then the really big choruses kick in and for the first time in what turns out to be a very long forty-five minutes, there is a glimpse of something, that intangible, that made the band so big in the first place back in 2007. “Marchin’ On,” is a song that big record labels’ dreams are made of, and apparently it is set to appear on Timbaland’s upcoming record, so expect that one to get quite big in the not too distant future.

The title track, however, is probably the best track on the album. Vocalist Ryan Tedder has a pretty big voice at times and its at its peak here, this six-minute plus stomper sounding something like U2 mixed with a bit of Muse, which could never be a bad thing. “Lullaby,” as you’d expect, is a soothing piece and a fun, if sedated, album-ender that serves to remind listeners of the band’s obvious talent, even if such talent hasn’t quite been displayed to the fullest extent on Waking Up.

Unfortunately, the rest of the album is comparatively flat, surprising considering Tedder is a song writer who has penned work for the likes of Leona Lewis, Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson. There’s a few more tracks that may perform well on the radio, such as the admirable “Everybody Loves Me” and the slightly less conventional “All This Time,” but as far as bettering, or even matching some of the efforts on Dreaming Out Loud, this record doesn’t really have that much to offer.

Almost exclusively, this is an album made up of middle of the road songs that very much adhere to the pop formula. It lacks creativity, which is fine, because this is a pop band; but at the same time it doesn’t offer up anything that you ever think may make significant waves on any chart, other than the aforementioned “Marchin’ On,” but even that is not as slick as “Apologize” and the like. In fairness, as soon as they arrived it was clear the OneRepublic were very much a band that had something of a limited shelf-life, but it seems to be the case that that shelf-life was even shorter than we’d initially imagined. Don’t expect this record to make too many year-end lists.

Essential downloads: “Everybody Loves Me,” “Waking Up,” “Marchin’ On” and “Lullaby.”

The 411: Without the big name record label and the Timbaland assist, this is an album I would probably never have reviewed because I would never have heard of this band. Nor would anybody else. And on this evidence, by the time they release a third album, everyone will probably have forgotten all about them completely.

Final Score:  5.0   [ Not So Good ]  legend

I love this shit, some real hits on this album and quite frankly i think you should stay away from anything popular as you quite clearly can't stand superior mainstream music.

Also, Apologize was a great song.

I think this album moves away from the mainstream, which is a good thing. I think they were labelled as such because apologize was so big, but they work better as a more alternative band.

Personally, I think the album is one of the better albums of this year. Nice use of cellos, pianos, violins, etc. More of an introspective album. All class, no cheese!

Wow. You can go to Hell. This band is AMAZING. I really have no idea what you're trying to say about htis Band. Clearly, your taste in Music is not up to Par. OneRepublic is THE complete opposite of Pop. They're sophisticated artist, who know what the hell they're doing. You really shouldn't be trashing a widely known band's sophmore album.

haha yeah you totally know what your talking about... u probably sit behind a desk pretending to know music. Ryan tedder is one of the best song writers in this era. Most of the songs on the radio are from him and i think this album has soo much creativity its unbelievable. Screw you. please quit your job thanks...

The musicality present in this album is amazing. This is a true album, from start to finish. Every song is solid, no filler at all. Maybe you need to give it a couple more listens; this album has so much depth... conceptually, musically, lyrically, emotionally.

I tend to agree with the rest of the comments. With all due respest, "Waking Up" is solid is a great listen from start to finish. Ryan Tedder is a tremendously singer/songwriter and songs like "All The Right Moves", "Waking Up" and "Secrets demonstrate his creativity as an artist. If you have not seen OneRepublic live, I suggest you take a closer look.

Its pretty sad when not one commenter agrees with the reviewer. Seems like everyone called the shots on this 'reviewer'.

Amazing album! If you don't want to listen to run-of-the-mill manufactured pop that gets popular, listen to this. Beautiful mixes, beautiful strings and beautiful emotion. Don't listen to this review.

Are you kidding me? This is one of the better albums I have hear in awhile? Who is reviewing this? The album is a mix of Radiohead, U2, Killers...but they also have a sound all their own. And for anyone that has listened to the first album....Apologize was better WITHOUT Timbaland.

I like the song "Good Life" the most! Its so exciting!
"Secret" is also nice! And dont forget "Marching On"!
The album is worth to buy to me.

But I still prefer the Fray! YAY! ^^

I have to disagree on two major points.
All The Right Moves was amazing for me because of its almost militaristic drum line and its interesting use of the cello. Waking Up, however, seemed really lackluster in comparison. I'm not sure exactly what was wrong with it, but it just felt very generic.

Secrets, meanwhile, I feel deserves a mention. The power and quality in that song are undeniable.

Also, Timbaland does not contribute anything of value to OneRepublic besides his record label's big name. His versions of Apologize and Marchin' On are merely the original songs with pseudo-dance beats tacked on; What's worse is that he has the audacity to make the songs "Apologize- Timbaland (ft. OneRepublic)" and "Marchin' On- Timbaland (ft. OneRepublic)". Last I checked, adding a backbeat does not an artist make.

So, in essence, you should turn in all of the headphones, speakers, and other audio equipment you own, because you obviously can't appreciate music.

Man I listen to this album over and over. Not sure what this guy is talking about. The album is awesome. I like this more then the first album. Of course it does not have apologize on it, but there are songs just as good just in a different vain. I love: Good Life, Missing Person 1 & 2, Fear, All the Right Moves, and Waking Up. The rest of the album is good also. Basically, I put it on a let it play. The whole album is good, just not sure what planet this guy lives on.

I think you need some serious help when it cames to right albums reviews...

I'm not the type of person that will buy an album just because I like one of the songs... And I bought their's you want to know why? because its worth every cent you spent in it.

Every single song in their albums is worth listening to.

maybe its to bad they don't sing about how they "Woke up in the morning feeling like P Diddy Grab their glasses, and go out the door - to hit the city and brush their teeth with a bottle of Jack" ... right?

Because if they did they would be "awesome " !

This album, this WHOLE album in its entirety, is FLAWLESS. Each and every song is unique and so very well orchestrated. I havent seen so much talent on one album in a LONG time. Frankly, you're very out numbered, Mr. Reviewer.
