Track listing:
1. Escape
2. Night of the Hunter
3. Kings and Queens
4. This is War
5. 100 Suns
6. Hurricane [feat. Kanye West]
7. Closer to the Edge
8. Vox Populi
9. Search & Destroy
10. Alibi
11. Strangers in a Strange Land
12. L490

Jared Leto might be seen as one of the more pretentious individuals on the face of the Earth, but when it comes to his band, there’s no denying its achievements. 2005’s A Beautiful Lie produced some big, big songs that made 30 Seconds to Mars one of the “scene’s” figureheads, but on the band’s new album, which has taken them four years to write, record and release, they go to war. At war with who? Well we don’t really know, but what is for sure is the fact that whoever 30 Seconds to Mars go to war with on this record, Jared Leto and co are going to be coming out on top, because this is epic.

The record begins with “Escape,” a track that has minimal vocals but instead builds anticipation for the main attraction with a frantic drum beat, and when that anticipation reaches fever pitch the band rip into “Night of the Hunter,” one of the biggest and best songs on the entire record. This track, along with many others such as single “Kings and Queens” and the Kanye West-assisted “Hurricane,” feature the trademark 30 Seconds to Mars sound of quiet verses with hushed vocals from Leto and huge, undeniable choruses. And it is on these unrelenting choruses where Leto comes into his own as vocalist. His piercing voice just goes on and on from strength to strength.

On This is War, however, Leto is assisted on vocals by a backing group that consists of hundreds of the band’s fans who attended a special album preview and were recorded for use on the album earlier in the year. This massive backing choir comes into play and many of the album’s tracks and more often than not only serves to make the songs sound even more impressive than they already are. This is a band that has always done a lot for its fans but this is taking it to another level, actually including them in the recording of the album. The band also ran a competition that allowed 2,000 fans to have their photos used as the record’s album art. Pretty cool.

This is War is a record that will please both new and old fans alike. It merges the two differing sounds of the band’s previous two releases, as it is crammed with catch-all choruses as mentioned but is also fairly progressive as the band’s self-titled debut was. Only these progressive moments are more haunting and epic than ever before, as “Stranger in a Strange Land” proves. Instrumental album-closer “L490” is simply bizarre but makes for a intriguingly psychedelic end to a stunning album.

And for those wondering how 30 Seconds to Mars and Kanye West sound on the same song, I’ll just mention that “Hurricane” is as near flawless a song as I have heard all year long. Neither West nor Leto take away from the other and in fact they compliment each other almost perfectly, Kanye’s verse being one of the album’s many, many highlights.

As for the album as a whole, despite its lengthy running time it never drags and on repeated listens you merely discover more and more intriguing sounds and genius lyrics that make it seem fresh every time. It took me numerous listens to realize that the French-spoken countdown on “Night of the Hunter” actually goes “un, deux, trois, cinq.” What happened to four? Weird. But that’s one of many idiosyncrasies that make this such a unique and powerful record.

Essential downloads: “Night of the Hunter,” “Kings and Queens,” “This is War,” “100 Suns,” “Hurricane,” “Vox Populi,” “Search and Destroy,” “Strangers in a Strange Land” and “L490.”

The 411: People focus way too much on Leto being an actor. People focus way too much about what other people think of this band to form their own opinion. Preconceptions aside, this is a fantastic album with some ridiculously impressive vocals, refreshing and intricate musicianship, outlandish cameos, elements of psychedelic and progressive rock and the biggest choruses in the history of the music industry. Slight exaggeration aside, this is genuinely one of the best records of the year and worth a listen regardless of the personality of the band's singer.
411 Elite Award
Final Score:  9.5   [  Amazing ]  legend

Album version doesn't have the Kanye West version of Hurricane.

I'm pretty sure its their record label theyre going to war with, since they had that lawsuit and such.

By the way, you can download this on Amazon today for $3.99. Can't beat that deal, unless you steal it.

Kings And Queens is one of the greatest anthems ever. That is all.

i've been completely blown away by this band from the beginning. i can listen to the first 2 albums from beginning to end every time. unbelievably beautiful tunes. can't wait to check this one out.

yeah, I don't remember hearing Kanye in Hurricane.

I'm gonna need a few more listens, I'm undecided about the record.

Best review I've read.

This album is awful. I've been a fan of 30 seconds since the beginning, and this is the final step into their complete and total descent into mediocrity. I loved A Beautiful Lie, but their image slowly became more and more mainstream. This album sounds more like R&B than Thirty Seconds To Mars, and in all honesty it's almost as poppy as Miley Cyrus at time. If you were a fan of their old stuff, this is not a mix of the two sounds, but rather a failed attempt to be trendy. Just listen to the songs on youtube first and save your money unless you hate creativity and love pop music.

I agree! By far this sounded like a cry for help. Wow not even a sort of scream track on here to. I'm not sure why they went this way, money? corporation type shit? i dunno but wow my wife and i just tossed this cd right were the other dust collectors are, thank you 30 seconds for garbage, atleast you'll still be paid!

This was a solid release. Thank Christ they tried to move away from the sound of A Beautiful Lie and back to the self-titled.

Such a let down.Nothing like their previous work.. A beautiful lie was a masterpiece and this wasnt to say the least. What happened to them??

Agree with Phil at the bottom. They took away the little bit of the rock element they had left after A Beautiful Lie and what they're left with is electronic emo. Turrible.

To my mind the album is wonderful. Much better than ABL. The lyrics are much more serious, the melodies more beautiful. Hurican, Closer to the Edge and This is War are simply fantastic. Some songs at first don't impress, but then you catch yourself simging to it. Totaly agree this the review. This is War is much more positive then both previous albums, there is the promise of the victory. I'm just in love with it!

Enjoyed their previous album. Gave the new one a look over and didn't like it much. Oh well.

I grew up hating Jared Leto on that "My So-Called Life" show all the girls were crazy about. I physically applauded when Edward Norton beat the ever-loving hell out of Jared Leto in "Fight Club." But I will be damned...30 Seconds to Mars keeps putting out awesome albums. I want to hate him and his band so much...but I can't argue with such unbelievable talent. The title "This Is War" sums it up for me. I am at war with 30 Seconds To Mars, and those talented bastards are winning.

jesus chrriiiist, why does "feat kanye west" mean "auto-tune" every fuckin time.. what an unoriginal egomaniac

Posted By: buddha (Guest)  on December 12, 2009 at 03:06 PM

This Is War is a major letdown after the 2 previous albums, too many songs with choir vocals, a cheap rip off of another one bites the dust, kanye and autotune, and the fact that almost every song is over 5 minutes long actually made it a chore for me to listen to the whole album.

I really enjoyed the previous 30STM albums, and thoroughly disappointed by this, I can understand some experimentation, but not on almost every track.

3/10 - Poor

From what I've heard, ther album seems pretty good and I've always had a guilty pleasure for 30STM. There are few bands nowadays who do the atmospheric anthem thing in quite such a polished and assured fashion - IMHO, 30STM have started outdoing the likes of u2 in those stakes.

However, it's still NOT alternative rock...

I really like A Beautiful Lie, and was hoping to enjoy this one, which I kind of did, but there is just way too much sing-a-long, emo anthem stuff going on. Seems like every other song has a choir of kids singing "Whoa, ohhh, ohhh". Too much. It's like The Black Parade, with less rock.
I fully agree with what CS said about Jared Leto. I wonder how many guys agree.

I have to say that I love what this album is doing. Old fans loving, hating it new fans loving, hating it and that people is what it is all about controversy. If they simply made an album that everyone loved or hated that would be that. But this album is creating so to speak war and that will make this album live for some time and we will definitely be hearing more of this album in years to come. Music teas days have a more eclectic sound to it so yes it is not that alternative as one would hope. But it is certainly not pop! This is a great album one I did not like the first time I listened to it but find this album flawed less. After going throe it properly, listening to it with headphones, considering what I have read about this album. I decided that I would agree with the people out there that this is one of the best albums of the year. I LOVE IT!!!

This is war has been so long in the making, and i have got to honestly say the wait has been more than worth it,i cant get enough of it i keep listening to it over and over again i would reccomend This Is War to anyone, if you don't buy another album this year, buy this one.

what a crappy album cover. looks like something i mean with powerpoint in 5th grade.

This is a great album.

@Morgan Fisher crappy album cover?? what are you talking about? Are you kidding? Its simplicity is what makes it stand out from other albums on the stores' shelves. What do you want? A super photoshopped crappy album cover like we're use to see in the music industry? I'm not even a fan of the band I just read some good reviews and I bought it and it's a good album.

This album sucks. It's like when Matt left, Jared discovered the chorus button on the soundboard and decided to throw out any sort of guitar riffs. I swear, all you can hear is the drums and the bass. Is Tomo even in this album?

meh, just another band we will all forget about in 5-10 years. Its not the worst music ever, but nothing special.

this album is laughably dreadful. in my opinion their attempt to make a point about anything regarding their "war" with virgin fell flat on it's face. if the music's truly a metaphor for their hostile intent then they certainly weren't going for any element of surprise; it's predictable, massively over-processed and even more over-dramatic. there's nothing remotely subtle or intelligent about this album, and with any luck it'll be forgotten about.

ps. just listened to the kanye west version of hurricane and vomited all over my keyboard. turns out it could be worse

I think people need to give this album a chance, it's a grower. I do think, however, they over-killed the fans on the album. It gets too cheesy and it's over-done. You can tell Flood worked on it with the sound of 'U2' drifting in slightly.

Posted By: ME (Guest)  on January 14, 2010 at 05:58 PM

Or because 30 STM decides to change THEIR sound, some of you feel they should continue making music YOUR way.

Save everyone the drama. If 30STM decide to change their music to sound how they please, they only have themselves and a record label to speak to.

I respect their transition, and enjoy whatever sounds are brought to the table. If I decide to listen to other types of music, they aren't the only band out there. I for one give them two thumbs up for this record. For what it offers, it's great and pleasing after waiting four years.

I agree. I love "Alibi" , "Hurricane", "This is war", "Closer to the Edge", and "Kings and Queens." Pretty much everything else sorta over did it witht he chorus, but I completely support 30 secomds to mars. I am a true fan and will enjoy every piece of music they produce.

The new album blows. A total waste of money. Way over produced. It's crap, don't waste your money, they don't deserve it. Get it for free on-line and you will agree.

Horrible. Bloody horrible. First 2 albums were the bomb, powerful, energetic, awesome. This is not War, this is major disappointment. Loved almost all of their old songs, never found a single track that I even remotely like in this one.

It seems to me that bands these days are becoming more focused on pro tools
and trendseting than playing their own instruments."This is war" is a prime example .This album is a pop album not rock and It's quite sad .The cover is a total contridiction to the music. This is a let down to all their prevoius music .The reputation of a great new age rock band changed into a overtrendy over dramatic band thats obvoiusly been affected by the tech\pop era .

I'm pretty sure they say "un, deux, trois, cinq" because those are all Fibbonacci numbers. Four/quatre, on the other hand, isn't. I could see Mars pulling some trickery like that.

I agree with all who said this album does not live up to it's previous. Well I am one to believe that it shouldn't have to. It's unique in it's own right. Things I despise about the album include auto-tune making its way in the album, songs like 100 Suns. Things I like, or rather the thing I like, Night of the Hunter. That's pretty much it. With that said, I don't care for this album although I must admit it's still a decent album. IMO, their best song by far is Oblivion. 30STM, please release more songs like it on your next album.

This album exceeds the boundaries of brilliant to me. The lyrics are so powerful and a refreshing break from all the common love songs/lyrics and promoting the feel of unity, fulfillment, fun. It is so sincere and flawless. This is War gives a universal sense of independence, belief, strong, determination. I wouldn't be able to get through the day without listening to a piece of this album. Each song is unique and can put a smile on my face uplifting my day. Great rock music.

This review is blowing it up bigger than it really is. I have heard plenty of albums with lots of detailing in the production, and this doesn't stack up - there are strong moments, but overall it sounds quite overdone. The lyrics are pretty poor, admittedly not as bad as what I hear on pop radio. On ABL, Leto sounded passionate, and his emo voice fit in. On TIW (which is very poorly named, it's more like "This Is Surrender"), any semblance to passion is lost. The electronic influences, for the most part, are just plain boring. The gang vocals sound fittingly pretentious. The album just tries so hard, and doesn't get there.
