Even if you only listen to what’s on the radio sparingly it is likely that you have heard some of Ke$ha’s music, as Animal’s lead single “Tik Tok” broke all kinds of download records for a female in the US. You may also recognize her from Flo Rida’s mammoth single “Right Round,” which was huge about a year or so ago. Either way, you’ll likely have a decent idea of what her music is all about, and I think it can be summer up fairly accurately in just one word: fun.

Ke$ha utilizes a formula perfected in recent years by the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga in that she makes catchy pop music that appeals to a large audience, that is fun to dance to, is inoffensive and generally makes for an enjoyable listen if you’re in the mood to mess about, get drunk and have a bit of fun. If you’re over the age of about 25, a cynic, an elitist, or just generally miserable, then you will likely view Ke$ha’s debut album as altogether shallow, a mere mix-and-match of proven formulas recorded solely for the purpose of moving units. But, so what? If it’s fun, does it matter?

While that’s a matter of opinion, what is undeniable is that this is some catchy, catchy music. Many tracks on this record have the potential to emulate the success of the brazen “Tik Tok,” – don’t be surprised if the likes of “Your Love is My Drug,” “Kiss ‘n’ Tell” and “Backstabber” dominate the airwaves in 2010. These are songs that suggest that Ke$ha can compete with the likes of the aforementioned Gaga and Perry, and although Ke$ha had a hand in writing just about every song on this record, I think most of the credit for the record’s success has to go to writers Dr. Luke and Max Martin.

It’s Ke$ha’s obnoxious personality that is stamped all over the songs though, as it quickly becomes clear that these songs are all about finding the next adrenaline rush and living life. This record isn’t great if you’re looking for life lessons, but it will aid you in having a good time in a club or at a party. The album is helped by the fact that there are only a couple of ballads, and I say that not because the ballads present aren’t good, but because with up-tempo, catchy numbers abound, the record never slows down and as such it never outstays it’s welcome.

I’m not sure if the record is strong enough to suggest that Ke$ha is going to be around for any longer than the obligatory fifteen minutes of fame, because the dance-pop genre is competitive as hell right now with some of the names I’ve already mentioned, and I’m not sure there’s room for another hot and quirky (and bisexual) female at the top. But if this turns out to be the first and last we hear of this girl, then if anyone remembers her a year from now, I think this record will be remembered fondly.

The 411: As far as pop goes, Ke$ha has laid down a marker with Animal as this is currently the one to beat in 2010. It’s fun, it’s sexy, it’s irresistible and it’s going to produce some pretty big hits, although perhaps none as big as the one we’re all already familiar with in “Tik Tok.” It remains to be seen whether this’ll turn out to be one of the better mainstream pop records of the year, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

Final Score:  7.5   [ Good ]  legend

I dont give a fuck if its fun. It's overproduced, pretentious, talentless electropop bullshit. Music can be fun and GOOD at the same time. ie. Van Halen anyone?

I'll put it in a sentence for you: I went in the bathroom this morning and took a huge Ke$ha in the toilet.

you forgot a few things on the list of people unimpressed with this album, those being: those with good taste, anyone with more than two digits in their IQ, people who don't bleach their asshole, and people who haven't traded sexual favors for drugs

This is exactly why the state of music is in such a bad place. Like a great singer once said many years ago. "I've been down for so god damn long it looks like up to me."

Geez, why all the negativity guys? I'm pretty sure that none of you have actually listened to this album, yet you're shitting all over it.

Look, everyone has different musical tastes. I get that. Ke$ha may not be your cup of tea. That's cool. But stop trying to act like your musical tastes are superior to others and call this garbage because it isn't the type of music that you like. Because you just come off as a pretentious douchebag.

You don't like Ke$ha or her music? Then why the fuck are you reading this article and commenting on it. You must lead a sad life if you feel the need to read about shit that you hate.

For the record, I have actually listened to the album and it was pretty good. I'd say 7 out of 10. No, her vocals arent going to blow you away and the subject matter is pretty juvenille, but it's FUN. It's stupid music to have a good time dancing to with some chicks at the club. Even though I'm sure some of you have never been inside a club OR a woman.

I just listened to it, it's completely overproduced pretentious electro-pop, yes, but dammit it's fun. I am over the age of 25, and I'm sure as hell not going to condemn myself to the crusty rockers corner yet. Van Halen?? Jump, indeed.

Wow, 7 comments from pretentious douchebags. Get over yourselves.

Sub-par vocals and juvenille subject matter should not merit a 7 out of 10. Regardless of how "fresh it sounds in a club"

Mentioning Van Halen as if they have done anything remotely substantial beyond 'good party sounds' for teenagers in he 70's? Sorry, please hand over your music critics card now sir.

Love how everyone rips on her. What's wrong with having fun in music? Kesha has stated she's not trying to change the world- she wants to have FUN.

Our economy sucks, people are jobless, the weather is bad. Why should my music be down?

I'm sick of serious, pretentious rock tracks about angst and drugs. I can't and don't want to relate to that. Listen to Mickey Rourke's rant about modern rock music in The Wrestler. Couldn't agree more. Some times when I listen to music, I want it to be FUN. Wow, imagine that...

There are a lot of those these days. OF course one of the reasons I gave up on clubs was the music...

KGNine- I know it's only January but you are already in the running for post of the year. It's funny because it's true.

Monty- There are 3 kinds of men who go to dance clubs.
1. Gay men who go out to have a good time with their friends.
2. Gay men in denial who try to nail as many women as possible in a pathetic attemt to prove to people that they are not gay.
3. Sexually frustrated guys who are there to try to date rape someone at the first opportunity.

Thats it.

Wilcox loves the mainstream. You can tell based upon his prior reviews. I tend to be 20/80 on his reviews.

I have actually heard a song or two due to my girfriends awful music taste. This chicks voice is extremely annoying. I can't take it seriously. It sounds like those remake albums for kids with all the kids singing along.

Shes defintely not as bad as alot of other pop artist but thats like a 350 pounder calling a 400 pounder obese.

She'll be dead soon trying to live up to this "wild" reputation that supposedly is "acceptable" now.

I'd rather listen to Kesha than that whore Katy Perry.

I don't LOVE this album but it's a good listen when you just want to bounce around.

I hate that people hate on something for it's production or becuase she seems manufactured I mean the girl did write most of her own songs who the fuck even does that anymore?

Can nobody have an opinion of their own these days? Is that what is happening?
Jesus Christ, SHUT THE FUCK UP you arrogant pieces of shit.

You have no place to call anyone gay, criticize their music taste, or judge them based on MUSIC.

Shallow pricks.

GET A LIFE. Oh yeah, you wanna call me gay? GO AHEAD. I am...so therefore when you low lifes type it in the next commment, it will mean nothing.

Everyone has different likes and dislikes. You like Van Halen? GREAT. I don't. There ya go. It's really that simple. Ke$ha is original, in my opinion. She is her own person and doesn't care what others think. I've known about her for quite some time and way before she got big. She's just an interesting person.

This comment is gonna do nothing for you guys and you're gonna lash out on me. Whatever, you idiots are just extremely narrow minded & can't accept anything else but what you think is good. I feel more sorry for you than "me and my bad taste in music."

PEACE.

Yeah, it sucks. What do you expect from a Top 40 record label marketing ploy? It's created for the sole purpose of making money; and from the looks of things it's succeeded.

Those looking for good party music should check out Atilla's album Rage. Can't go wrong there.
