J. Cole - Cole World: Sideline Story Review
Posted by Bill Wannop on 09.27.2011

Cole World CoverRemember to catch the weekly hip hop column on 411mania, the Hip Hop Herald, which features weekly news as well as album sales and releases dates!

As well don’t forget to follow me on Twitter!!

J. Cole is a new comer to hip hop, but has been steadily making a name for himself over the past two years being the first artist to be signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Label. J Cole began to make a bigger name for himself with his guest verse on the Jay-Z album The Blueprint 3 and dropping various critically acclaimed mixtapes. Many have heralded Cole as the next big thing, and the heir to Jay-Z’s throne. J Cole finally is here to drop his debut album, does J Cole prove he is worthy of all the praise, or does he need to be put back on the bench for some more seasoning?

Tracklisting:
1. "Intro" J. Cole
2. "Dollar and a Dream III" produced by The University, J. Cole*
3. "Can't Get Enough" (featuring Trey Songz) produced by Brian Kidd
4. "Lights Please" produced by J. Cole
5. "Interlude" produced by J. Cole
6. "Sideline Story" produced by J. Cole
7. "Mr. Nice Watch" (featuring Jay-Z) produced by J. Cole
8. "Cole World" produced by J. Cole
9. "In the Morning" (featuring Drake) produced by L&X Music
10. "Lost Ones" produced by J. Cole
11. "Nobody's Perfect" (featuring Missy Elliott) produced by J. Cole
12. "Never Told" produced by No I.D.
13. "Rise and Shine" produced by J. Cole
14. "God's Gift" produced by J. Cole
15. "Breakdown" produced by J. Cole

The first thing you realize when you listen to Cole World is that J. Cole takes his hip hop very seriously. Aside from the numerous free mixtapes J. Cole has dropped over the years in the build up to this album, J. Cole handles the majority of the production on this album; basically as a way to completely have creative control of the entire project. The result is an album that is completely true to Cole’s vision, but that will have mixed results from listeners.

J. Cole does have the lyrical talent, and really shows that on the opening track, “Dollar and a Dream III” rapping ‘Walk with a nigga, I give you my pain/So much on my mind I wonder how it fit in my brain/Scattered thoughts, dark secrets lead me to a blacker heart/Life can't get any worse, Stevie with his glasses off/Cause I still don't see hope, lookin' for a quick fix/When everyone I see is broke, get lost in weed smoke/Knowing it make it worse, thoughts roam uncontrollably/Barely trustin' niggas, over a decade they been knowin' me’. Cole continues the lyrical tracks on the songs “Sideline Story”, “Cole World”, “Lost Ones”, “God’s Gift (where he talks about waiting for Jay-Z outside his offices to give him a sample of his work. Jay originally shrugged him off, then 2 years later he found himself signed and on The Blueprint 3) and “Never Told”, showing that he rap with the best of them and is able to tell a story with his lyrics. There are a decent amount of positives with the album, but J. Cole wanted this album to be classic, but unfortunately he falls well short.

The track “Can’t Get Enough” has a decent enough beat; however Cole changes up his style and flow so much that you will think that the song features Kanye West as J. Cole sounds exactly like Mr. West. As well there seems to be a lot of filler on this album and it would have been much better as an album if it was left out 3 or 4 songs. Track like “Nobody’s Perfect” and the disappointing “Mr. Nice Watch” which features Jay-Z do not add anything to the album. Speaking of the jay-Z track, leading up to the release date, J.Cole made a big deal about trying to get a Jay-Z verse for the album. Many fans felt that it would have been a passing of the torch type moment between Jay and Cole, unfortunately it sounds like a phoned in verse from Jay and the track just lacks that monumental type sound that it should have had.

As well some of the tracks on the album have been released by Cole over 2 years before the album was released on his mixtapes. Tracks “Lights Please” and “In The Morning” were both released on mixtapes so some fans may feel cheated with these inclusions on the album (even though they both are decent tracks).

Lastly J. Cole handles most of the production for the album, and should be complemented as he shows some promise behind the boards. However one of the problems is that a lot of the songs sound very similar and after the first couple listens it was hard to differentiate between some tracks, especially on the first half of the album. Most of the tracks are of the slower tempo, and really there is no hit single on the album (the first intended single for the album “Who Dat” was released years ago and now no longer appears on the album). On the latter half Cole seems to pick up his production game giving some variable sounds such as the good “Rise and Shine” and “God’s Gift” with both tracks have a different sound that work well.

Many fans thought that this album would show that J. Cole is the heir to the Jay-Z throne, however after the last track plays fans will realize that is not the case, at least not yet. J. Cole shows great promise, with his lyrics and production and really creates a good debut album, but he still has some seasoning before he is truly able to create that great album.

The 411: J. Cole dropped his anticipated debut and aimed to create a instant classic, unfortunately he fell short of the mark. J. Cole shows great promise, with his lyrics and production, but he still has some seasoning before he is truly able to create that great album.

Final Score:  7.0   [ Good ]  legend

i know this is completely your opinion and you are entitled to it.

but can you specify exactly which songs on the first half that confuses you? because to me, they all sound distinguishable to me. He organized the tracklist very well.

Mr. Nice Watch might not have been a good song, but production was good, and Jay-Z's verse is on another level. There's a lot of references and double entendres worth lookin into. also, it might not add anything to the album but the fact that it is obviously for commercial purposes compared to the sound of his other songs.

take out both the commercial songs, and pretend like you've never heard Lights Please or In the Morning, you got yourself a good ass album with some substance.

and this album is a 7 to you, but the RED Album was a 9?!??!?!?!?!? unbelievable.

Maybe he feels insulted that J. Cole dumbed his shit down and became just another mainstream artist? I hope Yelawolf doesn't fall into this.

My opinion is this is classic! This guy is talking about what others will not and can not venture into! To top the cake produce most of the album yourself instead of having a made producer do it for you puts him on another level.

Good isn't bad...but I've been listening to it for a week now, and still sounds great and gets better and better. I think it is and will be a classic when it is all said and done. 9.5 out of 10...especially if you gave that Red Album a 9...Just an Angry Game with Everyone in the Industry on his Album with Everyone and their Momma handling production...is that what a classic album is now....lol....y'all can have that....

He is lyrically gifted. I think thats all that matters in todays realm of commercial, radio hip hop that has soiled an art form and movement. J Cole is a sigh of relief that maybe hip hop/rap can be saved from the hands of lousy artists as long as he stays true to who he is.

I like that Cole can get over with both audiences. He's an artist that talks about real topics, despite a few references to the generic bullshit. Definetely a good album i will bump for some time.

People have to realize that there are two monumental concepts that have to be understood with today's hip hop. First off, the problem is THE LISTENER. The second is that hip hop is not this new underground subculture anymore, its drowning in the mainstream. It IS the mainstream. These topics go hand in hand. The average audience, just like in Pro Wrestling, is a radio listener (or casual WWE fan). Sure there are great alternatives out there for the purists of hip hop (just like wrestling) - underground artists like ElZhi, Apathy, Phonte, etc. just like the independents in wrestling, such as DGUSA, ROH, Chikara, NJPW, etc.

These average listeners are, for lack of a better term, Dumb. Happy idiots that are sincere in being completely satisfied with what Hip Hop is being forced down their throats. Some people want MORE. I want more, so i search for it, listen to it, support it, spend money on their product, and attend shows. Same for pro wrestling. Its all relative to what the consumer wants from the industry.

J. Cole has an album that is very cohesive, and i believe has secured the average listener to being a fan, as well as pacifying the underground listener until his next mixtape. 8/10

I like the people trying to downgrade Game's album in relation to J.Cole's, when people seem to solely focus on Game's public antice instead of his actual rapping. I would say Game's album is an 8, and yes, Cole's is a 7. A lot of the beats either seem unfinished, or overblown (like MBDTF & WTT). Cole is a good lyricist though, I just can't take his yelling/monotone delivery long term.

The reason that he gives it such low rating is because the expectation he had was way too high. I will keep it short and sweet. Name a current up and coming rapper that is more lyrical and real than J. Cole! I would love to hear who it is. thanks

J.Cole would be #5 behind Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lamar, Skyzoo, and Blu.

You're welcome.

whoever wrote this review needs to go back and check retrace their steps real quick...and then try again. mr nicewatch and nobodys perfect are a waste to you? then you missed the concept and you lack the ability of interpretation. many artists hate critics like you who give the great albums lower reviews than the average ones. how many times did you listen to the album? did you do a once over? play it again for the rest of the week and tell me if you feel the same still.

What I dont get is how you dont listen to this album and relate to alot of it. For everypne whos father left they ma and hadda make it with they ma doing everything as a singe mother listen to the song "Brekadown". As far as im concerned how can you only say that there is not many cmmercial songs. See in my eyes the commercial world is meseed up. They dont ever go by lyrical content. I know Waka is a hype type rapper which is a change but he has the most immature lyrics of anyone. Honestly I believe the hip hop world needs to open they eyes to lyrical content. Now to tell the truth J cole is not my favorite up and coming Wale is. He is also a lyrical monster but i also enjoy the vibe wale has the more upbeat with crazy, intellectual lines that honestly you have to listen to him a few times to understand flly what hes saying. I think that is what is wrong with the commercial industry. It is such a hit or miss becase they dont allow the songs to be understood completely to make people say wow this shit is hot. IN my eyes most lyrical up and comers are

1. Wale
2. Los, hes absolute monster
3. Nipsey Hussle
4. J Cole
5. Meek Mills dont sleep on this kid

this is funny haha, i'm sorry cole spit better then game and made a better album to me,but it's all opinion. It's just like when i hear people say how cole tells story's that relate to more people and what not, i mean equals who get it in out in these streets still enjoy this music and rode with it first,so stop acting like artist ain't bringing it if they cover that. the same with party music, that's where hip hop started from! I don't mind commercial songs, especially if i can rocc out to em. An artist doesn't have to make songs that relate to my life to be ill,or have the best lyrics. Just entertain me. That one guy who compared it to wrestling i do the same, cole reminds me of a jake the snake or arn anderson right now,a great talent who you love watching and would pay money to see,yet he's not your first choice for world champ yell

Meek Mill is GARBAGE, but I forgot about those other dudes 2 posters mentioned, so actually, Cole is even further behind other new rappers once you include Nipsey Hussle, Freddie Gibbs, and Yelawolf. Wale is hit or miss though.

To all the J Cole fans, the 3 tracks listed above are so weak, I can't believe the album even got a 7! Makes Diddy sound hardcore.

Jay Rock
Sean Price
Freeway
Vinnie Paz
Ill Bill
