Is this “One Session” worth sitting in on?
D Bobby B of the Kottonmouth Kings presents One Session; this trio, which consists of Minus One, Cringe, and Tristate, are the newest members of the Suburban Noize Records family, and on a mission to restore hip-hop back to its original form. Do they accomplish their goal with their Sub Noize debut? Alternatively, is this "One Session" worth passing on? Let us find out.
Bump –
Track 2) I Need You feat. Tease: A good opener with a nice laidback beat, clever lyrics, and perfect delivery.
Track 3) Change Things feat. B-Rhaka: One Session goes into detail about their intent to "Change Things" and pulls no punches on this good track.
Track 4) If This Were: All members shine on this track, which is extremely catchy and enjoyable.
Track 5) Just All Right: Another dope track, I am very impressed with the beats and lyrics so far on this disc.
Track 6) Listen Up feat. Onique: Not a fan of this beat but the lyrics and chorus more than made up for it in the end.
Track 7) Get Cash feat. Johnny Richter: This is the track stole the show on Joint Venture, got me hyped for this CD, and is still a good listen.
Track 8) This Side feat. Paradox: One of those with us or against us tracks with an awesome lyrical effort over a dope beat.
Track 10) We Back: This is the return and reunion track, which is good but nothing more.
Track 11) Goin' Down feat. Hannah B: A dope track with a reggae type beat, catchy chorus, and impressive cameo by Hannah B.
Track 13) Hardhop: This track perfectly describes the type of music they make and is good too.
Track 14) Early in the Morn: Loving the beat, loving the lyrics, loving the chorus, loving this track.
Track 15) Street Warrior feat. Judge D: Judge D comes strong as always and One Sessions hangs with him all the way, I like the aggressive lyrics and delivery over the mellower beat.
Track 17) Representn' (Sin City) feat. Big B: This is the same as Track 16, more of a Big B showcase than anything but obviously I like him more than I do The Dirtball.
Skip –
Track 1) B Dub Intro: Consists of a lot of scratching and talking, however, not really worth the 51 seconds.
Track 9) Jungle Eyes feat. Paradox: Torn on this one, Paradox is decent, the beat was okay, but the chorus rather threw the whole thing off.
Track 12) I (Blame It On) feat. Chucky Styles: I been feeling Chucky Styles on everything he has been on lately but something just did not click here.
Track 16) Just the Fax feat. Dirtball: This is more of a Dirtball showcase than anything else, which is fine, but not for a One Session album.
Track 18) Bearskin Rug feat. Champagne Finesse: I honestly have no idea what this is, if it was supposed to be funny then it failed in my opinion.
One Session has a knack for lacing dope beats with even doper lyrics. This was a hell of a way to debut for Sub Noize. They want to take hip-hop back to its original form and they have a long way to go, but this was definitely a first step in the right direction.
The 411: This was a very solid debut from this trio. They are a lot more lyrical than most groups out there, and know how to work a more melodic beat rather than having a loud banging noise than drowns out most of the words. They are definitely a throwback, which needed to make a comeback, and they should only get better from here on out, highly recommended.
