Jamie Madrox - Phatso Review
Posted by Selwyn DeSa on 05.26.2006

Jamie Madrox is one of the most charismatic and entertaining figures in the underground rap world, and Phatso is one of the most anticipated releases in recent memory from Psychopathic Records. I myself have often wondered what a Jamie Madrox CD would sound like, and was very excited about this release. Will it live up to all the hype? Will it be better than Monoxide's Chainsmoker? Will all the other children ridicule this Phatso? Sorry, I had a little high school flashback there. Well there is only one way to find out…

Bump –

Track 1) Hey Phatty: The opener was both energetic and entertaining, and had tons of food references.

Hot Line - "I'm loco and grande like a luchadore, pulling aerial maneuvers at 300 lbs. or more."

Track 2) Get Em': The Hot Line definitely fits here as Jamie was definitely on point; the chorus was also very catchy and well done.

Hot Line - "On point like pencils, sharpen my skills and my mentals, so I can dominate the instrumental."

Track 4) Freak Out: The first verse reminds me of Blaze Ya Dead Homie's "Nasty" as it is heavy on the gross-out factor. The rest of it is mostly everyday situations that can freak people out, all the situations are realistic and relatable though, and the chorus is very catchy.

Hot Line - "And if you spit in my food, I'm a kill you dude. I know it might seem harsh, but I feel in the strange mood too."

Track 6) This B!tch: This would serve as the mandatory song about bitches, I love the beat, and Madrox's flow fits it perfectly here. The chorus is also catchy, and Monoxide's cameo shows why Twiztid is untouchable.

Hot Line - "I can't front, I like the lesbians too, and tell your girlfriend, I can eat pussy better than you."

Track 7) Big Gunz: This track features another dope beat, and catchy chorus. The first verse is what sets it apart though as Jamie lays a verbal beat-down on the music industry today.

Hot Line - "Hating on everybody accustomed to taking the easy route, so I cock back the hammer and I blow they back out."

Track 8) Keep On: This track is mostly about self-promotion, I felt torn on it at first, but after a few listens it grew on me.

Hot Line - "Everybody spits rhymes, but yours are not like mine. Mine are colored green, and yours are shaped like stop signs."

Track 9) Sour-Patch B!tches: Blaze Ya Dead Homie guest stars on this rather funny track about the type of nasty bitches you can come across on the road and so forth.

Hot Line - "We put the J in Juggalo, put the F in fat kid. No I'm not a pimp, but I slap that bitch."

Track 12) 4Fist2 Axe-Handles: This has a definite rock vibe to it, but Madrox's aggressive delivery makes it work. Monoxide also rips it Twiztid style.

Hot Line - "Chop your limbs off and slap you with em, when I'm pissed off, I hear voices saying get em.

Track 13) Tear Jerker: Madrox displays a different side on this track as he delves into his personal life, including his childhood, and more. It was extremely honest, deep, and powerful.

Hot Line - "Wanted to cry, but not in front of my peers, and not in front of a priest, so I wiped away tears."

Track 14) Take It 4 What It Is: Personally, I would have ended the album with "Tear Jerker", but I understand not wanting to end the album on a down note. This track however makes the finish seem anti-climatic. Do not get me wrong, it was not a bad track, just in a bad place.

Hot Line - "I blend like camouflage, and pose for cameras. I run with an entourage of people that'll bury ya."

Skip –

Track 3) Customer's Always Right: This is a moderately funny skit, but nothing to get too excited about.

Hot Line - "I can see you filled out an application for a job you don't want to work."

Track 5) This Is What We Got...: Another skit, this time with two people fucking.

Hot Line - "Oh my God, I forgot to put the rubber on."

Track 10) O.M.G.: There is nothing particularly wrong with this track; it just sounded choppy. I did not like the beat much either, so I just never got into it.

Hot Line - "And how you look and how you act is how they judge you at first. When they don't know you, never know you, and that's the part that's the worst."

Track 11) Pledge Allegiance: A decent track I could have gone either way on. It was nowhere near bad, but I had no desire to hear it again once it was over, so I have to suggest you skip it.

Hot Line - "Weak bitches this is not for you, turn it down, turn it off, copycats, you too."

Phatso was not as wicked as I expected, and that is not a bad thing. Madrox showed that he is a clever lyricist that does not need to resort to filling his album with blood and gore to make it entertaining. It was also a Jamie Madrox album, which I liked; too many times label mates pollute solo efforts, which defeat the whole purpose in my opinion. It was not what I expected, but better and I would give it the edge over Chainsmoker.

The 411: If you are a Juggalo, then you will love this album, and fans of Twiztid will be pleased. Jamie Madrox however, I believe has a voice and delivery that is so catchy, that he could crossover and even outsiders could find themselves nodding their head to Phatso. As far as my recommendation of buy, download, or pass. I say this one is worth buying.

Final Score:  8.0   [ Very Good ]  legend
