Nine Inch Nails – The Slip Review
Posted by Ben Czajkowski on 07.22.2008

First of all, many of you might be wondering, “Wait, this album is free? Where can I pick it up?” The answer to that: head on over to http://dl.nin.com/theslip/signup. You need to enter a valid email address, however, so don’t enter “nothing@nothing.com”! There are also various formats to appease all you audiophiles out there. And I suspect there are many of you.

Here’s the track listing that will by the syllibus for this album review:

1. 999,999
2. 1,000,000
3. Letting You
4. Discipline
5. Echoplex
6. Head Down
7. Lights in the Sky
8. Corona Radiata
9. The Four Of Us Are Dying
10. Demon Seed

Length: 43:45

The Slip is licensed under a creative commons attribution non-commercial share alike license. So, use it in wherever after you pick it up: podcasts, blogs, remixes, etc. Sweet deal. According to the NIN website, this “one” is on Reznor. Works for me.

However, is this download worth it? Let’s take a look.

Throughout this 45 minutes of brand-spanking-new NIN, you’re going to find a lot of sounds that are very reminiscent of With Teeth and Year Zero. There are many of the same riffs and electronic loops, similar lyrics, and definitely many of the themes from Year Zero. Is this a bad thing? Depends on what you want in a Nine Inch Nails album. I find a follow-up to The Slip's predecessor, not comforting, but satisfying.

This is, by far, nothing like The Fragile. Reznor and company have moved away from giving us that almost-grunge, industrial feeling to a more electronic and eclectic, garbled instrumental, mixed with lyrics that discuss revolution, conformity, submission and death. Sounds like my last relationship.

Morbid.

That’s what we should feel. How could you not? Example: The first “real” track contains the lyrics: “Blow my fucking brains out/pretty patterns/on the floor.../I jump from every roof top/so high/so far to fall/I feel a million miles away/I don’t feel anything at all.”

Immediately, the tracks that are going to stand out are “1,000,000”, “Discipline”, “Head Down”, “Lights In The Sky”, and “Demon Seed.” These are the charged, pumped, polished pieces that are going to pleasure your ear holes. They are going to dazzle you with Reznor’s lyrics, range, and experience in knowing how to present his work for the listener. These are, for lack of a better description, at this moment, the tracks that are going to potentially make it to radio.

Let that not distract you from tracks like “Letting You,” which, if played live, is just going to rip a room apart. At no point, on this CD, is the energy higher than during this song. And I say that, sadly; not really as a compliment for The Slip. When this track ends, this album has reached its energy epitome only three tracks in. “Discipline” levels off the potency built up, almost mockingly so of the power that “Letting You” delivers. You’ll feel what I mean; trust me. And as that bleeds into “Echoplex”, you’re moving into territory of the middle half of Year Zero, where tracks are more mellow and reminiscent of what Trent has brought us int he past.

“I need your discipline/I need your help/You know once I start/I cannot help myself.” The chorus for “Discipline.” This track beautifully blends Josh Freese’s drum work and a few layers of electronic work with a pretty piano piece throughout the song. It gives off the same strength as the single “Only”. And, like “Only,” “Discipline” does not reach above that mediocre level. It does nothing special to set it apart from the rest of the NIN catalog. Yes, it works as a single, but it’s also so...mainstream.

Unless you look at the music video, of course. Then it’s just hilarious. While, I have no confirmation on whether or not this album is a follow-up to the Year Zero themes, the video points in the direction that it does. As do many of the song lyrics on The Slip. “Heads Down” speaks, “And this is not my face, and this is not my life, and there is not a single thing here that I can recognize, and this is all a dream, and none of you are real.” I found myself recalling “The Matrix” trilogy, oddly enough; however, it is also, I found, a huge callback to “The Great Destroyer”, not only in the lyrics, but also in the ending instrumentals. Both are very similar, and I wouldn’t put it past Reznor if he just copy/pasted and adjusted from there. I bet someone on the NIN remix site remixes them. I know i would.

As many of you know, every NIN album has a pretty piano piece with depressing lyrics. This album is no exception. You find that in “The Lights In the Sky,” picks right up from Year Zero's "In This Twilight". Yeah, but you're dying, in the song, so, not much consolation there. "Watching you drown/I follow you down/I am here/right beside you/The lights in the sky/have finally arrived/I am staying right beside you."

When you make it to “Corona Radiata” and “The Four Of Us Are Dying,” you into for 11+ minutes of instrumental. I found the latter music more pleasing on the ears: better mixed, better sounds, and just all-together a stronger non-vocal work, for this album. “Corona” is more than 7 minutes long, and a track of this...caliber (definitely sarcasm) would have been better off as a two minute piece, in my humble opinion. I find this to be the only track skip-worthy, when listening all the way through. It doesn’t really pick up until the end, and that part is the perfect segue into “The Four Of Us Are Dying.” This piece is just darkly beautiful, with string work that sounds like it could almost be vocals. As I listened, I shut my eyes, and I pretended Reznor was crooning something foreboding to me, about death and the end of the world.

“Demon Seed” caps the CD on a high note after the instrumentals fell into an extended low point that lasted for more than 1/4 of the album. “It keeps growing/and I can feel it breathe/I have been trying to behave myself.” This track is very lyrically repetitive, and also destructive. This song finishes the new disc on the note that it should end on: somber, choleric, forewarning of the impending destruction.

So, to answer my question: "Is Reznor wearing down?" I say, No. Nine Inch Nails is still running strong. However, I don't see this "Year Zero" theme running into any more albums. I will be glad when the band starts putting out tracks like "All The Love In The World" and "Right Where It Belongs." For a potentially free album, I can't complain.

The 411: The bottom line is if you liked the previous two Nine Inch Nails CDs, you’re going to love The Slip. For a free album, Reznor and company makes it worth your while, continuing with the same themes and musical overtones new listeners are familiar with and old ones have grown accustomed to. As a listener, and a fan, you will be happy that Reznor isn’t waiting five years to deliver this to the public. It’s not going to reinvent the wheel, but Halo 27 adds another thumbs up the NIN catalog.
411 Elite Award
Final Score:  8.5   [ Very Good ]  legend

Erm ... regarding the video, I take it you're referring to the flash cartoon. In which case, it's a Meathead creation. So nothing to do with YZ, actually.

Exactly, another solid Trent Reznor effort. After buying all the other albums, it's surely nice to see him give back to his long-time fan base.

This work becomes much more understandable if you're ever struggled with a serious physical addiction. It's also a tasty over-the-top blast that has more in common with 'Broken' than it does with 'Year Zero'. How old were you, Ben, when 'Broken' came out?

Posted By: grote (Guest)  on May 06, 2008 at 01:46 AM

i thought about broken too. yz didn't come to mind. great album.

Meh, for free this is ok. I would rate it about a 6. A little better then Ghost but still not very good.

This album was a rip-off. It's horrible!

Posted By: Tasi (Guest)  on May 06, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Tasi - It's not often that you hear someone call something free a "rip-off".

And I was seven when broken came out. I've never had a true physical addiction, so I guess I cannot relate the same way you can, Grote.

But I guess that's the beauty of music, especially reznor's work: it talks to different people on different levels.

Free = rip-off?

That's a good one luvie.

I love this album.not just because it was for free, but hey it's trent reznor.anything he does is creative in it's own way.love it love it.

I know, what a ripoff. I demand my no money back on this free CD!

i am personally very happy with The Slip. Trent never fails to amaze me with his albums. Halo 27 is no exception. The combined sound of With Teeth and Year Zero blends flawlessly. I give The Slip a solid 9. And, the fact that it is free is simply ridiculous. never before have i seen a "thank you" album made just for the fans. All i can say is you're welcome Trent.

i really want to love this, but i really can't. i really want to shit all over it, but again, i can't.

sadly, the best thing i can say about it is that i don't think i would have paid more than i did for the free download.

it is OK for any group, but sadly, it is extremely sub par for NIN.

i just finished burning it. it is pretty hot. you cant argue with FREE!!!

In the words of Trent Reznor himself... "Fuck off. If you don't like it, don't fucking listen to it."

Posted By: Tia (Guest)  on May 06, 2008 at 04:18 PM

Trent Reznor is not a rock star, he is an artist. his music always drives me to step up in the creative world especially with the album “The Fragile”. All his albums are great. It’s great that his music has changed so much. Much of his newer music is less accessible than before. I think he has done a good job weeding out his fans ever since “The Fragile”. As his music evolves so does his fans. His angry audience seems to become more and more open minded or they just disappear. He’ll only have the more open minded crowd as fans in the end. The ones who don’t really care about how heavy or how catchy the music is but ones who are concerned about how much more creative and ambitious he has become. I've found myself not liking his albums when they're freshly new but after a few years of listening to them that I appreciate them on a new level like never before. His conceptual purpose has become obvious to me.

Trent Reznor and NIN shock the world with an idea lifted from the books of Radiohead. I think the shocker is that it did not take 5 years for a thin release.

How is a free album ever a rip-off?

definatly a great album. My fist listen I thought it was sort of bland but I weas at work driving my cart and had the windows open, second time was more isolated and I noticed more of the sound layers. Love it !!!!
Great that it was free.
also a comment on the never before see-ing a free album as a thank you to the fans person.
The last Smashing Pumpkins album before their break up.Machina II : friends and enemies of Modern Music was free and they encouraged fans to spread it on the net back in 2000.

This is a great Album, that most people wont find too good. Iv been playing synths, guitars and drummachines for years and to get the warmth, feel and production value of this stuff is hard. If your into electronic analogue sounds this is a nice album and for some reason reminds me of some aphex twin with more rock orientation...

If you do not like The Slip, and you cannot appreciate the many sounds of Nine Inch Nails, then you are not a true fan, and should really just keep your comments to themselves. If you don't have anything good to say, go fuck yourself. Also, a FREE album can't be a rip-0ff......because its FREE. Keep up the good work Trent, it's why we all love you

The Slip wins, and it wins hard. though its only downfall is the shortness of the album, but then again, Pretty Hate Machine was short, and kicked just as much ass. Fuck all you hating on Trent and the crew. they kick more than you, get over it :)

Everyone praises radiohead and now NIN for giving away an album. Give credit where credit is due: The Smashing Pumpkins did this in 2000 with Machina II. Not just the album, but another whole "CD" worth of b-sides to boot. The album is not one of their best, but it does include some great songs.

Not to take too much away from NIN; kudos to Trent for giving back to the fans. I love "Discipline".

Trent is a fucking machine. since 2005, NIN has released 3 full albums, one of which taking the internet by storm with the "Year Zero" campaign. The Slip brings out a little bit of all the music NIN has made. From the angry guitars of Broken and TDW, to the electronic chaos of With Teeth and Year Zero. The two instrumental tracks, "Corona Radiata" and "The Four of us are Dieing", reminded me very much of albums like Things Falling Apart. The Slip has proven itself worthy to be Halo 27 in my book. Kudos to Nine Inch Nails

The sequel to Year Zero?

hey Artemisian (Guest), in the very end of the discipline video, ull see a reference to the burearu of morality, which is definately year zero. so it does deal with YZ, actually. but anyway, the slip is very good and i cant wait till it comes out on cd in july so i can blare it in my car

This review sounds like actually love the album, but it's become cool lately to dog on Trent lately due to the fact he's back in the flow of things and making a lot of music again.
I do think they all can't be winners, but I do think you should make up your mind.

This is good stuff as usual from Reznor. Although i was disappointed after the first half of Year Zero, it is still good.
Why are folks saying With Teeth is filled with electronic noise and chaos? It doesn't even have that. With Teeth was under-appreciated.
It is a rocking kickass NIN release.
Neither Year Zero or the Slip are as musically as good as With Teeth.

i was almost hurt that it was free. Trent is an artist to respect. And i can't wait to pay for it in July. He has opened so many doors in his career, with the way he uses instruments and technology. The Fragile, Year Zero, & Ghost 1-4 are amazing works of art and statements about the world. And The Slip just seems to follow suite.

Trent Reznor has been my idol since I was in my preteens and he still is til this day! He is a musical genius, a talented man, and he's damn good at what he does! All you idiots complaining about The Slip being a "rip off" need to get yalls heads examined...b/c last time I checked, there is no such thing as a FREE rip off! I am very impressed w/ this album! Any true NIN fan knocking this album ought to be ashamed of him/herself! A REAL reznor fan appreciates ALL of his work! Keep on rocking, Trent! We love you!!! Happy early birthday!!!

(9/10) I really like the album. I'd rather pay for the album to support Trent and the whole NIN project but for now, I'd like to listen to this album and enjoy it. It's a really honest and well made album. I can hear a lot of "With Teeth" and "Year Zero" influences in every track while Trent made them accessible for a radio airplay (intentional or not). Good work, Trent. I'd really like to see the band live for the first time someday. I grew up with NIN since the "Downward Spiral" when I was a preteen back then and stayed a fan ever since. Thanks for giving us another masterpiece, Trent. Good luck and,as a fan, I'd like to say "you're welcome". Keep up the good work!

This album is great! sure it's 3 albums in 2 years but it's not something that was rushed, it came with the time, the feeling. I like it, and for those who call a free cd garbage, fuck you!!!!!

I think it is the best NIN release since 'Broken'. I love it.

the good soldier speaks of true fans. Trent could come out with a blank album and the soldier would say it was pure genius. I guess he has found you can find happiness in slavery. Poor guy, missed the whole point of nin.

I'm Gay for Trent

Actually, I think Corona Radiata is the best track off the album. It's surreal, beautiful, eerie and exactly my cuppa tea. As for the rest of the album, it rocks my brains out and I'd much rather listen to it than Madonna's latest effort. With the last few works you get the sense that NIN are nicely settled with the business of making consistently high quality music. I mean no one could expect Reznor to surpass every album he does. It may not be Downward Spiral or Fragile, and that's Ok coz he's already given us those anyway, but it's way better than 95% of the crap out there.

Posted By: Daniel (Guest)  on August 13, 2008 at 09:40 PM

In my opinion, most of this album is in relation to his "getting away" from his record label. Ofcourse their are personal double meanings that probably have great importance to Trent, but I think the reason most of the album sounds so mainstream, is it's simply a fuck you to Universal (his ex record label)Resistance Is Art...
