Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III Review
Posted by Patrick Robinson on 06.11.2008
Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III is the most anticipated hip-hop album in years. Can it possibly live up to the insane amount of hype that has surrounded it? 411's Patrick Robinson checks in with his full review of the brand new album that hits stores this week!
In 2004, Lil Wayne released Tha Carter and began to turn heads as his lyrical abilities and flow had substantially improved over his previous releases. Tha Carter II released in 2005 was a further affirmation of his skills. Amidst a whirlwind of mixtape releases, guest appearances and even unofficial remixes, a rumor surfaced that Wayne was having a lot of his material ghost-written for him.
Since then, and the public denial of this claim, we have seen Wayne’s lyrical abilities take a roller coaster ride in terms of quality; some verses being the best of the year, some being the absolute worst of the year. After continuing to claim he was the ‘best rapper alive’, despite the sub par lyrical performances, he continued to churn out mixtapes like none other before him.
With his recent outburst, criticizing mixtape DJs, effectively burning his bridges to that medium for the future, Wayne is using the hype he’s created through the mixtapes and placing all his eggs in one basket: Tha Carter III.
Being one of the most anticipated albums in years, can it possibly stand up to the hype surrounding it?
Tracks:*
1. 3 Peat
2. Mr. Carter Ft. Jay-Z
3. A Milli
4. Got Money Ft. T-Pain
5. Comfortable Ft. Babyface
6. Phone Home
7. Dr. Carter
8. Tie My Hands Ft. Robin Thicke
9. Shoot Me Down
10. Playin’ With Fire
11. Lollipop Ft. Static Major
12. La La Ft. Brisco & Busta Rhymes
13. Good Girl Gone Bad Ft. Bun B
14. Nothin’ On Me Ft. Juelz Santana & Fabolous
15. Let The Beat Build
16. Mrs. Officer Ft. Bobby Valentino
17. Misunderstood
*A quick note on the track listing: this is the version I received and is identical to the one on Amazon.com. However, I understand that there is a bootleg version floating around that has the tracks in a different order, and some are named differently, such as “Mrs. Officer” being called “Whip It” or the exclusion of “Good Girl Gone Bad”.
So, what makes this album so enjoyable? First and foremost, I find it extremely entertaining. Tracks like “Phone Home”, “Lollipop” and “Mrs. Officer” aren’t going to win any Lyrics Of The Year awards, but it’s obvious that he’s not trying to win any awards. “Phone Home” has Wayne at his most off-kilter best, jumping from topic to topic, seemingly rhyming words for no apparent reason, other than the fact that they rhyme. The beat by Cool & Dre has a dramatic sci-fi vibe to it, helped along by Wayne’s hook.
“Lollipop” has been around for a while now, and you either love it or hate it based on the auto tune performance Wayne turns in. Personally, I find it pretty amusing, as it makes songs like 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop” look ridiculous in the over-the-top presentation Wayne gives with the lollipop metaphor. “Mrs. Officer” would have been better if somebody had told Bobby Valentino that singing like a police siren was a bad idea. There’s a pretty funny line though:
”And she know I’m raw, she know it from the street
And all she want me to do is f*** the police”
There are a couple of standout tracks in particular, for the reason that quite simply, Wayne’s showing off his best lyrical outings. “Comfortable” would have made a significantly better lead single than “Lollipop” due to it’s more radio friendly nature and Babyface’s hook adding to the track. “Playin’ With Fire” again has Wayne jumping around, but he plays around with his voice at the same time, changing the way he delivers his lines half way through a verse.
The best track on the album though is “Let The Beat Build”. With production from Kanye West and Deezle, Weezy uses the five minutes as a pure lyrical exercise, not only playing around with the words, but the beat as well as each element drops in after every few bars. This is a track that Wayne fans will really love.
Two more tracks that are notable are “Mr. Carter” and “Nothin’ On Me”. The first, featuring Jay-Z was a little disappointing to be honest. With names like Wayne, Jay and Just Blaze on the beat, you’d expect something truly special, but what we’re ultimately left with, is a good track, which could have been better. It would have been nice to see some more interaction between Weezy and Jay on the track and Blaze’s beat isn’t one of his best.
“Nothin’ On Me” features some of the better verses Fabolous and Juelz Santana have done in recent times whilst Wayne goes nuts on the track changing his flow every few bars as well as his rhyming scheme, even wrapping things up with the auto tune effect.
“Good Girl Gone Bad” has understandably been left off some track lists as it features verses from Wayne and Bun B that were on a remix to “Apologize” from last year. Nevertheless, they still hold up really well against a new backdrop and lyrically, it’s the strongest performance in terms of actual content from Wayne on the album.
The worst track on the album would have to be “La La”. The beat from David Banner doesn’t do the three emcees any favors as it sounds like something from a kid’s show. Surprisingly, given the extremely basic and simple nature of the beat, it’s even more puzzling as to why the three have trouble at points staying on beat. All three seem to just drift off or stop for no apparent reason in each of their verses, particularly Busta Rhymes who seems to end one line in the middle of the bar.
The final track on the album, “Misunderstood” sums up the way Wayne is perceived by the hip-hop community. You see, people expect him to be some kind of lyrical equivalent of Andre 3000, featuring the swagger of T.I. and the insight and introspective nature of Scarface. But he’s not, and I don’t think he ever will be. He’s honest in the unapologetic nature of his lyrics, and lyrical in his own way. He uses his voice and flow in different ways, and the comparisons to Jay-Z in that sense are easy to see on this album. The sooner people stop stressing his ‘best rapper alive’ proclamations, and embrace the carefree nature of his songs, the sooner people will understand, he’s not only a good rapper, but an extremely entertaining one as well.
The 411: Is this album the classic it promised to be? To be honest, no, but I don’t think even Wayne could have possibly lived up to the hype he created. Wayne’s ‘rhyming words for the sake of rhyming them’ method can be off-putting, along with his rapid changes in flow and vocal delivery, which will make this an album that won’t convert many minds to Wayne’s music. However, if you’re open to some fairly unconventional mainstream rap (such as “Lollipop”) you’ll probably appreciate Lil Wayne’s bizarre album, Tha Carter III, I sure did.
Thank God at least one review of this cd didn't get sucked into the Wayne vortex like all the other one's. You hit it right on the head, it's a good album, period, that's it.

7.5 of 10 in my book. It was a good album but the rhyming just to rhyme hurt it and it came off annoying sometimes. Other then that there were a number of hits to justify this being a good album

Tha Carter = Classic.
Tha Carter II = Garbage.
Hopefully III is at least in between. I'll get it sometime this week.

Lil waynne's niche as an artist was one that had enough skill matched with bravado to stay separated from mainstream (besides remixes)trends and still kill it..besides bridman C1 and C2 had no features and no noticeable imprints from 'big name' producers...he did it his way within his camp and still ripped it..C3 was a futile attempt to appeal to a larger audience where he LOST HIMSLEF and failed to stay true and it hurt him. there were too many hands in the cookie jar at one time for there to be any consistency with this project thats why i only listen to #'s 1-5 and 10-15 minus 13. C1=EMERGENCE, C2=MATURATION, C3=SUPPOSED VALIDATION, BUT REALLY DYSFUNCTINAL FIASCO..i wanted feed me rappers or feed me beats and got rainbows and unicorns..dat nigga owes me an apology

Wow, dude. I mean, it's not even the best rap album of this year (The Roots' "Rising Down" slaughters this record). I just don't get the insane hype. I listened to Tha Carter III yesterday and just felt very underwhelmed by what's supposed to be the best rapper alive.

This was a pretty accurate review. It's obvious that you were not paid to hype the album like many of the other "professional" critics. The album is above average, but not great. Lil Wayne is a good rapper, but needs to go back to the basics. Most of his songs are just lyrical exercies that don't really have any direction. This album did not show the maturity you would expect for an artist who is thought by many to be the best alive.
Posted By: STLsFinest (Guest) on June 11, 2008 at 07:09 PM
I don't know how they could compare a crumb to a great. He's garbage and he's gay, no excuse for kissing another man on the lips then try to say it's cool. I bet if he got caught sucking dick he would try to justify it to. Fuck him and his bull shit music.
Posted By: Sam (Guest) on June 11, 2008 at 07:13 PM
All real hip-hop fans know Lil' Wayne is garbage, to be honest he isn't even viewed as being on the radar.
Seriously, the guy is horrible, and the fact that so many people actually think he's good & talented is indicative of both the stupidity of the masses, and the sad state commercial hip-hop has fallen to.
Killah Priest's new album "Behind The Stained Glass" is ill, really good production, really deep, ill rhymes, and it sold a mere 800 copies in its first week (one of which was me). And yet I imagine this piece of trash is flying off the shelves left, right & centre. The majority of Lil' Wayne's fanbase is dumb sluts who want to fuck him, and shithead fake poser wannabee thugs. Fuck Lil' Wayne, for real.
If you rate this album any higher than what it deserves, that is - being exposed as garbage mainstream trash, than you are not qualified to have a valid opinion on hip-hop.

Errr, what? "The best rap cover of this generation"? What the hell are you talking about? This cover blows, I could go make that now in photoshop. If you want to see a genuinely dope cover, check out this:
That's the front cover for Ill Bill - "What's Wrong With Bill?" (2004) - a genuine rap classic, a million times better than this lil wayne piece of trash.
Posted By: Big C (Guest) on June 11, 2008 at 07:48 PM
the album was a dissapointment people want stuff u can ride to and bump, %80 of the songs either didnt have sweat beats or were a song you and yo girl would listen to. the carter is the best cd ever i think he needs to hook back up with mannie fresh.
Posted By: Guest#2446 (Guest) on June 11, 2008 at 08:56 PM
this album isnt terrible-but it is bad. only good songs are 3 peat, Mr. Carter, and Nothing on me. Phone Home has a dude yelling phone home the whole song and La La has a baby yelling La La the whole song. This album was way too average for all the hype and Yes, the album cover was gay as hell. It definitly didnt help that this album was all over the internet two weeks before it was released. I love Lil Waynes freestyle way of rapping when its mixed with a good beat but anyone who says this is a great album is still on Waynes dick too hard

I can name 50 rappers dead or alive that would tear him to shreads, Wayne is even biting jay-z by calling himself the best rapper alive when the black album came out that was jay's thing
FUCK LIL' WAYNE

I wonder why all the wayne haters out there feel like they need to comment on every review as though, some how someone having a different take on an album is offensive. Truth be told the carter three is like any other final product of a trilogy...different its different and thankfully so... if I wanna hear the carter 1 then I'll put the carter 1 cd in and play just as I'd do the same for the carter 2 or any other album out the...but this is the carter 3 we not talkin about the roots or whoever else u feelin and mad cuz nobody else is feelin. To listen to the carter 3 is like a mental exercise that takes to every possible corner of the hip hop genre..every track is not to be takenseriously like its the track that's gonna save the world. Sometimes its just fun to make shit rhyme and put together some metaphor so outlandish even wayne has to laugh at it... If u listen to this album as it is and stop searchin for the cure for cancer I'm sure u'll come (wayne haters unite) away enlightened... The man has already proven what he can do and now he's just doin his thing
Posted By: newtralmind (Guest) on June 12, 2008 at 01:31 AM
lil wayne is garbage. on the same level as soulja boy and the like. a prime suspect in the murder of hip hop.
Posted By: midas (Guest) on June 12, 2008 at 02:29 AM
look...its this simple,b boys and real hiphop heads know that weezy is the hottest mc out right now(&its not even close!)this album is a classic.i got tons a' respect for andre3k and scarface but lyrically weezy will eat em alive.and TI?are you serious?when it comes to swagger its not even close...wise up.c3 is the best hiphop album of this decade and in 15-20 years we'll be talking about it alongside true classics like ready to die and rwasonable doubt
Posted By: 24hourrifle (Guest) on June 12, 2008 at 01:26 PM
To be totally honest, im a little upset at the whole album...i downloaded it to my verizon phone which costed me $1.99 per song and i didnt have enough space to download every song but from the ones i did download i wasnt impressed....Im a HUGE wayne fan...you pick any of his songs from any album (including mixtapes) and i can rap them word for word including hooks and ab-libs...im mad as ever to know that i waited this long for him to deliver the fire that he created from numerous other tracks and i saw and heard few...Mr. Carter-thought it was going to be a classic wit jay-z and weezy...BORING!!! i think he should have saved some of his rhymes from all those freaking mixtapes and put them on the album....his rhymes to me were weak on some songs...WHAT AUDIENCE IS HE APPEALING TO? DWAYNE CARTER...IF YOUR READING THIS....YOU ARE ABOUT TO LOSE A FAN....I STUCK THROUGH ALL THE CONTROVERSY...THE GAY TENDENCIES AND EVERYTHING ELSE...I WILL NOT EXCEPT ANYTHING LESS....STEPP IT UP MR. CARTER.........THAT IS ALL!!!
Posted By: Chuck313 (Guest) on June 12, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Were not haters we just want hip hop to be pure again. The right cats (The ones with skill) never get shine....while sub par rappers are what the public perceive as being hip hop.
Posted By: SYC (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 01:30 AM
this album is great. some songs are easier to listen to but he definetly picks up every crappy beat with his raps. everyone should buy this album. Let The Beat Build is one of his top 3 songs of all time
Posted By: jwalter1 (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 03:08 AM
I bought the carter 3 and yes, it doesn't go as hard as some of his mixtapes or previous albums but this is different. wayne is bringing hip hop back. his tracks are lyrical and a lot of ppl don't realize that because IT IS SO LYRICAL. i heard ppl saying killah priest and prodigy and cats like that are better than wayne but then they say that killah priest album only sold 800 copies. Wayne's did that on preorders the first day that became available. i think when u look at who is the best rapper alive, u have to look at album sales and features. If every other artist in the game wants wayne on their tracks then he must really be doin his thang.
The part about wayne being mad at mixtape djs is understandable. YOu would be mad to if u try to put out ur album and its leaked before the first single is even released. Think about how many free mixtapes wayne has put out. so then when he tries to put out his album the djs wanna leak it. thats crazy.
To me, the Carter 3 is a classic and wayne IS THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE
Posted By: Nigil (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 03:54 PM
The Carter 3 does not live up to the hype. He should stuck wit drought 3 as his carter 3.
Posted By: bizz (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 04:28 PM
This album is an ok album. there are good songs and some songs that suck. There was way too much hype about this album and it did not live up to it at all. If people stop suckin lil wayne's dick all day and just listen to the music and forget that it is by him, they will see that he is not the best rapper alive. He obviously has some great songs and has a lot of talent to rap. He has great lyrics in a lot of his songs, but he is no where close to the all time greats. I loved his unrealeased stuff from the drought like "Burn This City" and "When They Come For Me", but this album was not good at all. Weezy is a good rapper, but he is definetly not the best rapper alive.
Posted By: matt (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 05:20 PM
All you guys have an old school mentality...you like tupac and niggie cuz they were it at that point in time...u grew up listening to them so you have loyalty to them...the fact is that lil wayne is exactly what he claims to be...the best rapper ALIVE...alive being the key word...he is the best rapper out right now...people who like tupac and biggie might not like weezy because his style is diffrent...its unique and its more modern...im just tired of the comparisons to biggie n tupac...thats like comparing the style of clothes we wear now to the style of clothes they wore in the '70s...let go of the bell bottoms already!
Posted By: InFLOWence06 (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 07:42 PM
C3 is one of the riskiest albums i've heard. The last album I heard that was this mature was 421...The Day After. Dr Carter kicks ass, best song this year Shoot Me Down, Tie my hands Ms officer LaLa Fire Misunderstood 3 Peat all vary from good to great Phone Home blows. Listen to Dr Carter though lil wayne's biggest problems in ealier albums was his lack of story Dr C is one of the best stories since Nas' One Mic, But then again you'll never like Weezy if you don't like symbolism aka if your simple. No this is not my favorite album but its up there.
1)Anghellic-Tech N9ne
2)Carter 3-Lil' Wayne
3)The Art of War- Bone Thugs
4)Vintage Tech-Tech N9ne
5)Ready 2 Die-Biggie

I think that he's the best rapper alive and like he said himself he isn't the greatest ever by while he workin yea why is he on every song and if a song doesn't make it to number one he's one the remix boostin other people's sales yea that mean people are listening to him cuz he's crap right? I think hes the best rapper cuz of the fact that he's most requested obiously and he doesn't pen and paper is lyrics, like other roided up bitches. just because C3 is versatile and every song is single material doesn't make it not good, in fact I think its versatility the Song over jazz make it very much a classic and everybody doesn't have to like him for him to be a legend, for instance I think 2pac is overrated and if he hadn't died he would have fallen off. Just because I think lil wayne is the best it doesn't make him my favorite. I much rather listen to Aaron Yates(New CD "Killer" comes out in july) than Wayne
Posted By: Yeah (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 11:38 PM
This is a good album. It may not be as good as C1 or C2 in comparison, but it is a good album and it is fun to listen to. I DON'T think he's the best rapper alive and I think that statement only contributed to the hype that surrounded this album(which killed it cuz no one could have lived up 2 the amount of hype) with that being said, u all need to stop hating AND stop ridin his dick. Actually listen to the album and u'll realize he's not as great as he says but he is pretty good
Posted By: hip-hop fan (Guest) on June 13, 2008 at 11:58 PM
Review is pretty much spot on. This album isn't a classic, but its good. There are some good songs on here with some of my favorites being none other than Let The Beat Build and Tie My Hands. Phone Home and La La are the opposite however and completely fall short when it comes to concepts and lyrics all the way to the best. The album is typical Wayne when it comes to ups and downs in quality. Overall its good and can be listened to nearly all the way through. That being said I think it really lacks a song that I personally just fell in love with. Better than most garbage coming out, but nothing spectacular. Once again great review.
Posted By: Gdub (Guest) on June 14, 2008 at 02:59 AM
I think the this review was right on. Good beats overall but no real content for the album to be considered great or even close to a classic.
It's a shame that truly talented artist with substance are not supported in the same manner. I guess this is what our generation considers to be "real"!!!
Tell Wayne to stay off the drugs and create some jobs for the Katrina victims with the money he's making off you ringtone junkies!
