The Review

2004’s Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses was a departure for Slipknot, one that had the Iowa metallers adding acoustic instruments, solos, and a progressive edge to their music. The album sold well, but the hardcore fans were less than impressed with the “Stone Sour” sound added into the band’s core aggressive sound. After four years, Slipknot returns with All Hope Is Gone, an album that takes elements from the band’s three studio albums and combines them to form an album that is brutal, fast, furious, and infectiously catchy all at the same time.

Unlike the last album, Slipknot doesn’t open All Hope Is Gone with a four minute intro, opting to have the short “.execute” lends a dark tone to the proceedings, as previous intro’s "742617000027" and “(515)” did so well. The two minute opener leads into “Gematria (The Killing Name),” one of the heaviest songs the band has written since the Iowa days. The six minutes fly by, as blastbeats, solos, and an awesome breakdown await the listener. The lyrical content is bleaker than usual, with Taylor repeatedly screaming “What if God doesn’t care?,” a hell of a question, at the conclusion of the track.

The harsh vocals are used in a greater capacity, especially in the beginning of the album. It isn’t until the chorus of “Sulfur” that we hear Taylor letting out those high wails that he became famous for in Stone Sour, Taylor’s side project. Taylor’s vocals throughout All Hope Is Gone is some of his best work, as he pushes his range to the limit and even experiments with some crooning on the epic, Alice In Chains-ish “Gehenna.”

Some of the material on All Hope Is Gone ranks as the heaviest material the band has ever written. “Vendetta” has a death metal feel to it, especially in the beginning, and while Taylor uses clean vocals a bit too much, the riffing at times sounds similar to Obituary or later-day Morbid Angel. “This Cold Black” blasts out of the gate, an unrelenting five minutes with heavily distorted backing vocals, and a technically proficient solo that will impress even the most anti-Slipknot fan.

Slipknot released two singles before the release of All Hope Is Gone, “Psychosocial” and the title track. The former is a mid-paced romper, with Taylor spitting lyrics like the old days, before soaring with one of the most beautiful sounding choruses of the band’s career. It’s guaranteed to be a live favorite. So is the title track, which is a surprisingly aggressive finish to the album. While the band has had a tendency to have either an epic, plodding, or low-key ending to their previous releases, All Hope Is Gone ends on a pulse-pounding moment, one that won’t be forgotten even after the last note is over.

On Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses, Slipknot utilizes cleaner melodies and worked around their edgier sound to experiment with acoustic guitars, especially in “Circle” and “Vermilion Pt. 2.” On All Hope Is Gone, the acoustics are kept to a minimum, only being brought out for the power ballad “Snuff.” It’s a decent track, but feels out of place compared to the rest of the material. On their last album, the softer tracks were intermixed along with the heavier tracks, but the majority of All Hope Is Gone is darkness and scorching riffs. So “Snuff” seems a little too Stone Sour for my liking, but I appreciate the band working to push their sound to the brink. “Dead Memories” does a better job of showing the emotional side of the band, being a slow and cathartic experience for the listener.

The band members all do their part to create the wall of sound that blares out of the speakers constantly on All Hope Is Gone. Joey Jordison is a great drummer, one that seems to get better with time. Guitarists James Root and Mick Thomson continue to be a hell of a duo, working off each other, sounding at times like a modern day King/Hanneman. Paul Gray keeps a steady rhythm, and Fehn and Crahan are percussion monsters, adding in subtle touches to each track to make their presence felt.

All Hope Is Gone is another achievement for Slipknot, an album that has the band slowly evolving their sound while taking the best parts from their previous three albums. Fans worried about the toned-down nature of Vol. 3 will be happy to hear their favorite masked maniacs turning the volume up again. Fans of the band’s melodic side will find their tracks, but All Hope Is Gone is meant for the fan base that likes the band at their most venomous moments, as long as they don’t mind clean vocals around from time to time.

The 411: Don't worry Slipknot fans; not All Hope Is Gone for you, as the album is a solid look at the band's history, all put onto one compact disc. You will hear some of the most aggressive material of the band's career, and also some of the most melodic moments. Slipknot has been through a lot of adversity during the past couple of years, but it's great to see them back on top where they belong. Some of you "uber" metal heads will knock this album, as you have previous Slipknot albums, but those fans will be missing out on a great metal album, one that will leave you breathless and wanting more.

Final Score:  8.0   [ Very Good ]  legend

I download the album, and i have to say ts damn good, id give it a 8/10 too.

Its not Iowa or Vol III buts its still awesome.

Now i know theres the haters, and i wont be surprised to see a few bad comments on here, but everyones entitled to there own opinion.

BUT, slipknot, according to many is "poser", and the 9 man band is a clusterf*ck.

Nah, theyre really talented and AHIG proves it, there are some really metal trackes here, Killing Name and Physcosocial.

The bad is Corey Taylor uses his teenager voice, i like cookie monster voice.

ANd the rest is awesome, sure a acoustic like Snuff doesnt belong here, but i can honestly say its better then the vermillions.

this a thrashy album, and slipknot has changed to this metal monsters.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Sure the album may be technically sound, but I'd be weary of the effects these songs would have on your consciousness.

I wasn't expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised in return. I'm glad that they able to make it heavier than their last effort, but expanded on the hints of prog rock that they played with in Vol. 3.

Good review. Great album. I wouldn't have considered myself a Slipknot fan until Psychosocial, and the rest of the album is just as good. I'd go slightly higher than 8. Maybe 8.5/10.

Very good album . But sounds like later day Slayer. Just imagine Tom Araya singing in place of Corey Taylor. Thats quite an influence !

This album is absolute shit!

Nowhere near as good as the others.

I'm currently listening to the album at the moment. So far, none of the songs have been bad, however I still prefer the original albums released by them then the newer stuff.

It seems to me, just like one of my other favorite bands Sevendust, Slipknot has changed so a more wider audience can be focused on. To me, that is sad, as the main reason they became popular is for their original sounds.

Umm im a huge slipknot fan but listening to the whole album..im kinda disapointed its not as hard as i thought it would be...Yeah physcosocial kicks ass and theres a few decent songs...But After it was over i felt EH...maybe i'll listen to it a few times and it will grow on me..maybe my expectations were too high..i was hopeing for a more gritty corey screaming and being mad at the world..i didnt really feel that

I totaly agree with Big Will

Not one bad song on the album, and some bloody good ones too. I'd say its some of the best music they've produced. A nice variation of sound too, between say psychosocial and snuff, two of my favourites.

Seeing how I'm not an angry at the world teenager, as I was when I first found Slipknot, I've realized all bands that I listened to in HS, sound nothing like there awesome first CDs(execpt maybe Deftones). I'll buy the album none the less and hope to be impressed.

I had very high expectations for this album.

After downloading (legally on Zune) today I have come to realize that Slipknot has turned into one of those "politcal" bands. It seems to be the thing to do now-a-days.

All my old favs like NIN and Greenday are going political and it buggs me. Not because I agree / disagree with what they are saying, but because what brought the band(s) together no longer exists. The reason I started listening no longer exists.

Not to mention this album pretty much sounds like Stone Sour with a DJ.

Been a knot fan since I first heard Spit it Out back in the day. Been a maggot ever since.

Heck, I even almost got the tribal S tattoo on my back. I can safely say I am glad that I didn't.

Their music is taking a turn for tasts that I do not enjoy. To me... Slipknot is the first three albums. That is it. I will still listen to those albums but today, Slipknot lost a maggot.

When I first seen slipknot after there first album release during ozzfest they blew me away and I have been a fan ever since. Gotta hand it to any band with 9 members that can last longer than some bands out there with 3 to 4 people in it just shows they actually love there music. If you listen to any press release about any new album coming out you will "pump" yourself up so much you will always feel a bit let down, as I felt about ever album after ther self titled. But on this one I just checked the release date and waited, reading no info on it at all. I bought the album and I must say the band as a whole unit as grown so much that I got chills listening to the album. Some say the soft stuff needs to go but you know if slipknot wants to do it they are gonna do it nothing we can do about it, I enjoy it. Every member of the band easily push themselves to hit the peak of there strenghts and you can hear it. Why would you want to hold someone back I mean a vocalists like taylor can sing, scream, growl great so let him do it, it fits and sounds amazing at times. This album truly suprised me made me feel like the first time I heard them and I will definatly be jamming to this album for along time. And will be judging almost all metal songs/albums I hear against the diversity and talent of All Hope is Gone. And I personaly have not felt this way since I heard Panteras Vulger Display of Power. I know I will get flamed for that one lol but it is true

I also first found Slipknot when I was an angry teenager. A lot of their material spoke to me and that nonspecific rage.

Now that I am a 27 year old with a 6 month old daughter, I find that I am just as angry, but about different things. So I can appreciate how the band has changed and even how they have politicized themselves. It still strikes a chord with me on that same level as when I was a younger man.

take slipknot out of the mix of metal and whats left, not much really, how many metal bands r this diverse, hardly any, thank god they take the time to make albums,if u like one dimensional metal, there is so much of it,but slipknot r something else,or we wouldnt b commenting on them, how many metal bands present us with art visually and aurally, most metal bands r acting to manly and macho,or putting fertilizer on thier balls to show us how big they are, thank god 4 slipknot,im going to play the album again

I hold Slipknot to a higher standard then most based on their previous work. This was supposed to be the hardest album ever according to the band, but I have to say it falls WAAAY short. If you scratch out Slipknot's name and replace it with Stone Sour, the album would be amazing. Since it is Slipknot this album is incredibly weak for them. I just hope they get back to their roots.

To sum it up Slipknot went from XXX to late night Cinemax (LOL). If you are into softer melodies and like a nice glass of wine next to the fire while listening to Elton John then this album is for you!

I bought this cd with great excitment only to be grealy disapointed. Unlike their last cd this one lacks any hint of rhythm. I listened to the whole cd with out missing a note(although i wanted to turn it off after the 3rd song)and at the end of it all I was left with one question. Why would any band put out such a shitty cd after their last one blew us all out of the water. Slipknot fans dont buy it i know its less then 10 dollars but please save your money. If you do buy it all i have to say is "I told you so".

Could this album have sounded more commercial?

All Hope is Gone is to Slipknot what And Justice for All was to Metallica. Nowhere near as good as the first 3, but still decent.

Let's just pray Slipknot's next album isn't their "Black" album.

Posted By: Doom (Guest)  on August 28, 2008 at 01:27 AM

This album is a fantastic, immense piece of work and is Slipknot's best album so far.

It may not be all out brutality like their self titled album but it even blows that one out of the water in terms of an overall piece of work.

People forget that you don't have to be all out blast beats and death metal growls to be considered heavy and brutal.

Some of the slower and experimental stuff like "Gehenna" is actually right up there with the best songs on the album IMO.

It also takes way more than just one listen to fully get your head around this album.

So many great tracks on this album with "Gematria", "Sulfur", "Dead Memories" and "This Cold Black" the standouts.

10/10

Wow.I bought this album and was simply blown away.Ive been a fan since day one and this is some of their best material to date. This is a real masterpiece. Are you all that closed minded? To think if they sing on one song the albums sounds like stone sour?"snuff" in my opinion is a great song. Corey Taylor has an extreme range and has great singing talent. An album cant be great if it doesnt have diversity. My fav tracks are Butchers Hook,This Cold Black,Gemetria(the killing name),and Snuff. 9.5/10.Keep it up Slipknot.

Oh my God, what an album? You might think its not as good as the others but i think it beats the shit of them personally. Theres something for everyone on this album, soaring choruses, fast paced death metal vocals and amazing guitar work. Finally an album that mixes harsh, melodic and softer styles all in to one perfectly. All i can say is i hope this is not their last album. 10/10
