AC/DC - Black Ice Review

And so rock 'n' roll returns. In all its glory?
And so rock ‘n’ roll returns. In all of its glory? We’ll see. I’d say that as far as rock ‘n’ roll goes, Motorhead are leading the way this year with their latest effort Motorizer. Of course, with Motorhead, what you see is what you get. They’ll release a new album every couple of years packed with blistering belters and their fans will lap it up. There are no surprises, no strings.
With AC/DC, not so much. Of course, they have the added pressure of being one of the most successful acts in music history. 200 million records sold worldwide; that’s a fucking shitload. And they’re widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of all time. However, many would argue that they’ve been on something of a downward spiral ever since [1979’s] Highway To Hell, which itself sold in the region of 40 million plus copies.

So eight years since their last release Stiff Upper Lip, AC/DC return and this time they’ve brought producer Brendan O’Brien along for the ride. O’Brien has produced a plethora of best-selling albums and has worked with some legends including Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Rage Against The Machine, Velvet Revolver and more. But he doesn’t bring too much to the table that AC/DC didn’t have already. Production’s maybe a little cleaner, but that’s it. Really, there’s nothing surprising about this new album; it’s AC/DC for christ’s sake.
If you’re going out to buy this, you do so knowing exactly what you’re going to get so in that way, Black Ice does not disappoint. Indeed in the first half a dozen tracks, there are more than a few reminders of what made this band so great and popular in the first place. Such tracks as lead single “Rock ‘N Roll Train” and the massive “Big Jack” are great throwbacks, bringing back memories of the band’s finest work.
Black Ice is the band’s longest album to date and that’s not a good thing; the songs start to drag, the vocals become more monotonous than they already are and everything about the second half of the album is a mere reminder that this is a band who made a career out of puns about “balls” and beating the term “rock ‘n roll” into the ground. If you’re not a die-hard AC/DC fan, you will get tired off this album pretty quickly. It’s like they’re trying to make up for the eight-year wait by putting a bunch of filler in there, but it just makes listening to the album all the way through something of a chore.
By the time the title track, the last track, begins to play, I’m frustrated, irritated and frankly bored. On the other hand, Black Ice does come to a close in somewhat spectacular fashion, the aforementioned title track being arguably one of the best on the album featuring everything we’ve come to expect from this band – great riffs, powerful sleezy solos and average lyrics.
Still, ending on a high note isn’t enough to remove that sour taste from my mouth. I had genuine high hopes for this album and now I find myself puzzled as to why. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a particularly bad album, but there is absolutely nothing memorable here, nothing to make me want to listen to it again any time soon and indeed nothing to warrant its inevitable success.
I think it’s fair to say that the quality of your average AC/DC album is judged based on how good the riffs are, and in all honesty, there are a lot of good riffs here, particularly in the first half of the album. But unlike on some of the band’s better albums, Dirty Deeds…, Back in Black, Highway to Hell etc, there are no truly great riffs the likes of which the band are capable of here. None that I will remember when I wake up in the morning. And that’s a major disappointment for me because they’ve spent the best part of a decade on this album and it simply does not live up to my expectations.
The 411: And so rock 'n' roll returns. In all it's glory? No, not really, and that's a shame because I think Black Ice could have been much better than it was, even it was just cutting out up to half a dozen of the tracks already on here. There are moments when this album stirs memories of the band at their best, but there just isn't of those on here. Some tracks are huge, but too many drag and lack any real spark to ignite the glowing embers of Black Ice into the roaring volcano it had the potential to be. Fans will lap it up, but ultimately it's not a patch on the band's greater stuff. That said, there are worse ways to spend an hour of your time than throwing this record on.
They sound like happy, rich old men on this album. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I guess.
The lyrics are all kinda bland rock-and-rolly. Brian does a lot more "singing" than usual. The solos are all pretty innocuous.
It's not bad, but it doesn't have the *bite* of some of their best albums. On the last song, they talk about how great life is, and how "when the devil comes a callin', I ain't gonna be around" or whatever. That's a little bit different from the attitude on some of their best songs: "Highway to Hell," "Hells Bells," "Burnin' Alive," etc.
But I like it. It's fun. Just maybe not all that memorable.

Come on !
Just give Brian Johnson a break !
Sure he aint Bon Scott. But get over it ! Bon´s been dead for decades and AC DC soldiered on. Nobody could have provided a better replacement than Brian did.
Just forget all the the mediocre 80s stuff (except back in black of course), and give this album repeated spins.
Its very subtle. After listening to it for the third or fourth time you´ll notice how strong this album is.
In my oppinion its the best album from the band since back in black, and its only notch beneath the 70s stuff (Powerage is in fact worse than Black Ice)

I was really disappointed in this album. No wonder AC/DC refuses to sell their stuff on itunes or rhapsody where singles can be purchased. Rock 'n Roll train was the only good song. Cash grab anyone?

"However, many would argue that they’ve been on something of a downward spiral ever since [1979’s] Highway To Hell."
Surely it's ever since Back In Black?
I did agree with this though:
"Really, there’s nothing surprising about this new album; it’s AC/DC for christ’s sake."
Amen. I haven't got the album and haven't heard Rock N Roll train but I have a fair idea what the album's going to sound like. Unless they go all 'blow up your video' again, and they clearly haven't according to your review.

Having followed AC/DC from the start of their career (and also being a fan of Bon Scott over Brian Johnson), I can say without a doubt, this record has the best batch of songs they've come up with since Razor's Edge. Sure, it's no Powerage or Highway To Hell or Back In Black, but it's a stronger effort than they've made in many years. I would take it over that "comeback" trainwreck from Metallica any day - and I'm a huge fan of that band also.

I don't know if it's an error with my CD but the last song on the album gets cut short and finishes up on the first track of the album. I gound this annoying so I ripped the CD to Wav format and edited to 2 songs with Creative Wav studio. Now the 2 songs are perfect and don't bleed together. :)

this album reminds me alot of what i've heard from chinese democracy in the sense that it'd be amazing if it was an entirely new band that i had no preconcieved opinions of. that being said, i still hold acdc in high regards as one of those bands that are hard to stay mad at. all in all this cd is chock full of party tunes to drink to with your buddies. which is what they've always been to me, so i'd give it a solid 7.5ish.

This is a great album, better by a country mile than 'Back In Black' (and we all know 'Back In Black' is the yardstick by which AC/DC albums are measured).
OK, so I'm a fan.
It took more than one listen to come to this conclusion. 'Black Ice' really grows on you, I've been playing it constantly since its release on 18 October. I wear headphones and have it playing on my iPod in bed at night. Ditto during the day at work. It's in the CD player in the car, and it's in the stereo in the house.
When I'm listening to it, I'm loving it. When I'm not listening to it, I'm thinking about when I will be.
Brian Johnson actually sounds to have learned a trick or two in the 8 year layoff since 2000's 'Stiff Upper Lip'; the Young brothers are as rhythmically tight as ever. Angus' solos are a sheer delight to listen to. Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams are solid and dependable.
My favourite tracks, in order, are 'Money Made', 'Rocking All The Way', 'Black Ice', 'Smash N Grab', and 'Rock N Roll Dream'.
I'm surprised that some of the reviews I've read (mainly on the Internet) have been slightly negative.
One 'criticism' I agree with is that it's a long album, and there are a few tracks that seem like 'filler'. Do what I did. Buy the CD, rip the tracks, and save your 10 favourites onto a music player, or burn 'em onto a blank CD (to, say, play in the car). Viola! Do that and you have pure rock genius distilled.
Definitely a 10 out of 10.

not sure which album you heard, but Black Ice kicks butt. There are two or three throw away songs true, but the remainder of the album is so much better than anything else from the current music scene. Black Ice does exactly what ACDC always does ROCKS. They have taken us back to an era when music was fun not political or trying to hammer you with ideals.
Music is meant to provide some escape from the day to day drudgery we all face. ACDC on Black Ice does just that and has created a classic album all real rock n roll fans can enjoy.

Let me first start out by saying I have been AC/DC's biggest fan throughout the last 30 years and they will always continue to be the greatest rock and roll band of all time. But as a lifetime AC/DC fan I was truly let down by this album. After 8 years of waiting, not only were the lyrics bad but the entire album was missing the two things AC/DC is known for......hard Angus riffs and thunderous drums. "War Machine" came about as close as you could to the "Thunderstruck" sound we all know and love but still came out on the short end of the stick. Don't get me wrong I still liked the song and a few others on the album, but I guess I expected more after 8 years. As I listened I found myself wondering when that unmistakable AC/DC sound was going to start. “This can’t be all there is to the song, right?” I asked myself! When Brian said this album would show the diversity of the band, he wasn’t lying. But with over 30 years of the notorious Angus riffs and to arguably end there career on such a diverse note was a step backwards in AC/DC history. This album has too much Blues and not enough flat out high intensity thunderous rock from beginning to end like “Shake a Leg” and “Have a drink on me”. I wasn’t expecting it to be another “Back in Black” album but my expectations were set high, maybe too high. But can you blame me!

why don't you listen to the cd before you shoot off your mouth. bon scott is long dead man and johnson is the king of the hill. people that write reviews should actually listen to the music instead of spouting crap!

The album is alright if you take it in one song at a time, with space in between. Do not try to listen to this album straight through however. The range is almost non-existent. The album’s rhythm rarely ever goes higher, lower, faster or slower. It remains at the same steady, mediocre pace throughout the entire album, not even changing for each song. This album’s droning tunes are all too likely to cause a rhythm induced coma. See their previous stuff for the antidote.

hey i think this album gets better every time i listen to it. and the song black ice has a good riff(sure its not as good as back in black or highway to hell, but still, its definatly good enough)

Get over it, if you want new, innovative metal, listen to the new cutting edge. On the other hand, if you want to listen to 30 years of experience, doing what they do best, i.e. blue collar, work ethic bluesy rock, then buy the album. Is it new, the way "BinB" was in 1980, no. Is it good, yes, better than almost all the metal made today. So Daniel, how old are you, do you have 30 years of doing anything under your belt, let alone 30 years perfecting one craft. I doubt it.
