The Review

The past three years for Canadian rock band Nickelback has been one hit single after another, based off of All The Right Reasons. The album has gone 7x Platinum in the United States alone and the band has reached a level of success that most can only dream of. So how can a band top their biggest selling album? If you’re Nickelback, it’s by recruiting producer Mutt Lange, of Def Leppard and AC/DC fame, and cranking everything up a couple notches. The ballads are more emotional and the rockers have a clean sheen to them, helping to mask the male chauvinist viewpoints of Kroeger and company in the lyrics.

Dark Horse is the sound of a band taking their success and showing it off for the world to see, whether they want to take a gander or not. It’s hard to take the band seriously with titles like “S.E.X” and “Something In Your Mouth,” yet Kroeger spends the entire album trying to make the listener believe every word out of his mouth. It’s laughable at times; you can’t take a band seriously with choruses like “tease them all by sucking on your thumb; it’s so much cooler when you don’t pull it out, you look so much cuter with something in your mouth.” Maybe if this was the debut album of a new band, we could forgive them for being so naïve, but this is Nickelback; they should know better than being so juvenile and moronic on their sixth album.

Single “Something In Your Mouth” is a great opener, sans the lyrics and Chad’s weird rapping in the pre-chorus. Lange’s production lends an anthem rock quality to the music, and the band still knows how to write a catchy riff. Too bad they couldn’t support that with decent lyrics. “Burn It To The Ground” has a nice groove to it, with a Black Sabbath mixed with late 80’s Def Leppard vibe to it.

A lot of the album has a Def Leppard feeling to it, and Lange isn’t the only reason. Nickelback seems to be stuck in 80’s arena rock mode on Dark Horse, which actually benefits the bands in the instrument department. Guitarist Ryan Peake steps it up quite a bit, pulling out solid solos on the album, the highlight being his work on “Just To Get High.” Peake pulls out a very Richie Sambora-like bridge solo that also ends the song on a high note (no pun intended).

The other rockers on the album are hit-or-miss. “Next Go Round,” Dark Horse’s version of “Animals,” is fast and energetic, with a great solo to boot, but the constant macho attitude in the lyrics distracts from the song. “S.E.X” has a steady bass line and a slight industrial rock leaning to it, a different sound for Nickelback.

The ballads are a mix bag, as most Nickelback ballads seem to be. For every “I'd Come For You,” there’s a “This Afternoon.” The former actually sounds like a classic Nickelback tune, trading in the alcohol and orgies for regret and promises made to that special someone, while the latter is Nickelback going country on us, pulling out the good-old acoustic guitars and hitting the bong, with unnecessary background noise from a random bar to add what Nickelback calls “atmosphere” and everybody else calls pointless.

The main problem with Dark Horse is that it sounds dated. Most of these songs could have been outtakes from Def Leppard’s 1987 classic Hysteria. Musically, the band is on fire, upping the ante with above-average guitar work and a steady rhythm section. Lyrically, like I’ve stated earlier, the band takes ten steps backwards, trading in sub-par angst-ridden drivel for boozing tough-guy crap. Personally, I liked the former side of Nickelback a bit better, when they were broken hearted and obsessed with the one that got away, not concerned about one-night stands with random drunk woman they pick up in the clubs. Nickelback has a huge following, meaning that Dark Horse will go #1 on the Billboard charts and sell millions of copies. Does Dark Horse deserve that much attention? Not at all; while a decent album, it definitely is a step in the wrong direction and a worrying sign of what the future may hold for the band.

The 411: I've always considered Nickelback to be a guilty pleasure, something you don't talk about with your metal buddies. I enjoyed All The Right Reasons, but the band took a big step back with Dark Horse. The album sounds forced, with the lackluster adult lyrical content and clichés left and right. Nickelback may have tried to make their own Back In Black, but in the end, they came out with Flick Of The Switch. Die-hard fans will find their favorite tracks; however, even they might be irked by the sudden change in Nickelback.

Final Score:  5.0   [ Not So Good ]  legend

I personally enjoy the album. The two singles they released were very good and I listened to them countless times. They did change slightly, for example when i heard "This Afternoon" for the first time I thought it sounded a bit country but it grew on me. I personally love the album, I love listening to Nickelback, I mean people are starting to not but cds anymore. I still found it a good album and am glad I bought it, and can't wait for them to release a tour so I can go see them perform it. Their lyrics for some songs are different and some are pretty basic and some are really great. I really enjoyed the solos by Ryan on the songs and will listen to this cd many many many times. The beats put on through-out the songs are catchy but it is a change for Nickelback thats for sure.

No worries, Rob. Mudvayne is coming tomorrow or Friday. We've had a lot of good content lately. And we wouldn't want Mudvayne getting lost in the fray :)

Just a preview...It's worth checking out. You can read my review soon enough! :)

By the way, this album blows. Such a cheap copout to finish their RoadRunner contract. If I were RR, I'd find a way to sue Nickelback.

for all you nickle back haters out there..... Thank you! Im glad to see that this album got bad reviews so that hopefully the radio isnt a 24 hour source for this shitty ass band

If you like Nickelback, you'll love the album. If you don't like them, you won't like the album. It's that simple. The reviewer isn't a big fan. I am. I like this album as much as All the Right Reasons... maybe more!

"Die-hard fans will find their favorite tracks; however, even they might be irked by the sudden change in Nickelback."

You have it all wrong. Die hard fans were the fans of Hesher, Curb and The State (and some of Silver Side Up), all of which were notably harder than more recent albums. Die hard fans were disappointed with the last few albums because the band had become too soft and pop-oriented ("sell-outs" was a common accusation among older fans).

This cd is, for the most part, faster and harder than All the Right Reasons and The Long Road. This is a step back in the RIGHT direction toward where the Nickelback fan base originated: fast, hard, dirty, grunge-esque rock.

For the haters out there: Yes, the stuff you hear on the radio is pussy-ass bullshit that is way overplayed. But if you like real rock, swallow your pride and listen to Curb and The State. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Well stated, Tom.

The State remains one of my all-time favorite rock albums. And Curb was pretty good too.

I have not heard Hersher. Is that available anywhere?

i have this record and it is great new there was a reason i didn't listen to critics they suck.

I wish I had known that it was being sold online on the day it came out for $3.99. That sounds like the right price for it. I heard it on VH1's The Leak on that same day, and while some tunes were decent, with guitar solos and vocals turned up a notch from ARTR, I wasn't all that impressed. I saved my money for Chinese Democracy.

This is a great CD.
It's hard to take this review seriously when the writer doesn't even know who plays what. Peake doesn't play solos, Chad does.
What I also find funny is that this band gets blamed for taking themselves too seriously, but when they write tongue in cheek lyrics, they get blamed for not being serious enough... which is it?
I don't see why people who dislike Nickelback go to such lengths to tell everybody, go find a hobby or something. I mean, I have no idea why Neil Young got a record deal, but I don't go to every website to write about it.

Personally I don't think this album compares well to their other albums, even their singles on Dark Horse were disappointing, although not bad. Nickelback has changed way too much in their style of music in this album, which I do not believe was a good step in the bands future..

You guys need to shut the crap up! For one there future looks fine! How much money do they have again and look how many damn fands they have.I think that the new album is great along with there old ones! Alot better then Def L. love song shit all the time.. Oh and I'm with the dude above me...Chad does the solos get it right. This band will have a hell of alot more CD's and tours!!You can say they suck when I see your damn band on the road making millions!!Good Luck ass holes!!

My fav Band. love all their songs but this album just sucks a**. i waited so long for it and to see if they could out do themselves again. WRONG.

I have to agree with Dan and others who didn't like this one. I've been a hardcore fan since before Nickelback hit the mainstream, but I'm not liking Dark Horse overall. Musically it's good, but other than a few tunes, it's not something I feel is worth spending my time listening to.

Posted By: Disappointed (Guest)  on December 14, 2008 at 02:56 PM

I think Dan nailed this review. I love Nickelback, especially the State, and I've followed them up to All the Right Reasons. Yeah, it's selling out, but hey, at least their songs don't ALL sound the same.

This album is...mediocre. There's a few good ones, and the music is quite good, but they lyrics are atrocious. Considering the strongest points for Nickelback are their riffs and Chad's lyrics, having poor lyrics on most of the album cuts away half the appeal.

I agree with the 5.0.

Seriously guys...we've waited three years for THIS? Better luck next time.

Nickelback has always been a happy pleasure for me. From the first time I heard Leader of Men I was hooked on them. The State is a very good CD and Silver Side Up is even better. The Long Road seemed to be the b-side tracks of Silver Side up, with only a few really great songs, and All the Right Reasons was hit or miss for me. While some of the tracks are among my favorites from the band, and others are some of the most skipped songs I have.

I've been listening to Dark Horse for a little while now, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. After all, I didn't like the song Rockstar the first time I heard it, but with more listens it grew on me. It's a tough album to describe. It does rock, but it also whimps out. The ballad/singles are horrible. All of them. It seems all the rocking songs are about sex or sexuality. I don't mind songs about sex, but all of them? C''mon guys. Never Again from Silver was about revenge on a an abusive father from a child's viewpoint. The aggressive guitars and songwriting were a perfect match to the subject. And still one of their hardest songs to date. (Speed does not = heavy).

Overall I like some of the songs, I just don't love them. It isn't until song #9, SEX, that I finally feel like I got a Nickelback track. That's the one they stretch themselves a little on musically and it pays off big time. Too bad the lyrics couldn't have been better. But I don't mind a good song about sex, but by the time you get to it, you've heard so many on the album, you wonder why you need to hear another. The rhythm of the bridge into the solo is killer, though. And there is enough differentiation of sound within the song that it makes it fun and interesting to listen to. The song Shaking Hands has a perfect Def Leppard/Bon Jovi "HEY" behind the rhythm, and it couldn't seem more stupid or contrived.

Mutt Lange didn't add anything. In fact I think he overpolished it all and made for boring anthemic hard rock of the 80s. Similar to something I would expect from Bon Jovi. I love 80s hard rock! I'm sure they'll play well in the arena live, but Nickelback/Chad needs to stop thinking about writing the next hit and selling albums and write one from the heart. And if this is it, then it's a pretty hollow effort.

PS. The album reminds me of the movie Jumper. Man, I so wanted to love that movie, and there are some killer scenes, but over all, it's just a bad flick. Same goes for Nickelback's new CD. Burn the 2-3 good tracks and forget the rest.

I fully appreciate the very unbiased review above. The embarassing part is that I keep expecting them to prove themselves as a genuine and talented band due to the fact that somehow these guys sound very grounded. But its truly shocking for such a huge band to come with sub standard lyrics.. I was horrified with some of them.

Posted By: linz (Guest)  on February 05, 2009 at 04:33 PM

Not what I expected from Nickelback. There has been a clear progression in their music culminating in All the Right Reasons, and this was a step in the wrong direction. The music itself is not bad, but for most of the songs the lyrics are just awful. For a Nickelback fan, though, this is probably not going to be your favorite album.

Posted By: JBone (Guest)  on March 12, 2009 at 01:14 PM

The amazing thing about Chad is that he vacillates from writing songs like "Burn It to The Ground" and "SEX" and "Next Go Round" to writing angst ridden songs like "Savin Me'-to writing puppy dog, heart wrenching ballads like, "You're never gonna be alone"? This is called having multi-faceted, COMPLEXITY-people!***Nobody will ever figure out who the REAL Chad Kroeger is...

Awesome album - loved every song on it. Don't get too psyched to see them perform it in concert though... they only played like 3 songs from the album on their Dark Horse tour. All the other songs were their oldies (slow ballads too!)
