Review:

Let’s begin with what we know. We know how long Chinese Democracy took to release. We know who is no longer in Guns N’ Roses. The important questions to ask regarding Chinese Democracy are not about release delays or former band members, we already know these things. The important questions are about quality. Is the music any good? Is this a record you can put on, sit back, and enjoy? Most importantly, does it make you desire to belt out the lyrics at the top of your lungs and play air guitar like so many previous Guns N’ Roses records? We know it cannot possibly live up to the hype, but does the music succeed in spite of it?

The record kicks off with a slow build filled with sirens, a jagged guitar riff, and booming drums. We know Chinese Democracy is truly beginning when Axl’s trademark screechy wail busts through the door. Welcome back, Axl.

Chinese Democracy is loaded upfront with rockers that immediately shatter any concern that the new Guns N’ Roses record might be a ballad fest. The title track grinds and grooves. “Shackler’s Revenge” is perhaps the heaviest Guns N’ Roses song ever recorded and pummels the listener with a guitar solo by Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal that is sheer terror (in a good way). “Better” follows and is one of the record’s catchiest songs. If this record is going to have a chart-topping hit, this will most certainly be it. Anyone doubting Axl’s ability to sing like he did back in the 90’s need look no further for proof to the contrary. His trademark rasp is on full display and it sounds great.

The next four songs offer a bit more variety. “Street of Dreams” is a power ballad-by-numbers that old school GNR fans of songs like “Don’t Cry” will enjoy. “If the World” is a funk filled apocalyptic plea sounding like a cross between Faith No More’s “Evidence” and “Stripsearch”. “There Was a Time” is the first “November Rain”/”Estranged” type song on the record and perhaps best illustrates the record's overblown production. This song alone features a drum machine, acoustic drums, metallic guitars, acoustic guitars, plenty of synthesizers, and begins and ends with a choir. Seriously. But the odd thing is…it works. It is a grand spectacle that perhaps only this band can get away with. On the flip side is “Catcher in the Rye”. “Catcher” is a pleasant Queen-ish/Beatle-esque track that suffers from a few questionable production choices. For example, about midway through there is some distracting piano noodling that leaves this listener baffled. It sounds like nonsense.

The second half returns to the aggressive march showcased at the start of the record. “Scraped” begins with a hilarious barbershop quartet of Axls moaning a capella before proceeding into the most Appetite sounding track you’ll hear on Chinese Democracy. The music shuffles along similar to “Mr. Brownstone” or “Rocket Queen” and Axl sounds loose and defiant much like he did throughout that record. “Riad N’ the Bedouins” charges ahead and treats the listener to a particularly delicious chorus. “Sorry” slows things back down a bit, but there’s no doubt that this track is every bit as aggressive as the previous two. It sounds like a cross between Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains, and Ozzy and includes some of Axl’s most ruthless lyrics (“You talk to much. You say I do. Difference is nobody cares about you.”) It also possesses the “cool ranch dressing” moment of the record (“but I don’t want to do it”). Finally, there’s I.R.S. Axl says, “Gonna call the President, Gonna call a private eye”… I say, “Gonna probably skip this one more often than not”.

The record ends with three songs that, for better or worse, exemplify Axl’s flair for the dramatic. “Madagascar” is a challenge. You are either going to hate or love Axl’s vocal approach. He begins the song sounding old and tired, but as the song progresses toward its triumphant conclusion, his vocals become more and more vibrant. There are some production issues too. Is the MLK speech or the backup chorus of Axls at the end really necessary? Next is perhaps the standout track on this record. “This I Love” is the sound of a heart breaking. It is intense. It is sad. It is desperate. It also is home to one of Chinese Democracy’s most memorable guitar solos. All of the pain and despair translated into words by Axl is embodied by the anxious cries of Robin Finck’s guitar. Finally, “Prostitute” offers a fitting conclusion. It is a mixture of stunning melody and metallic bombast, much like this record as a whole.

Make no mistake about it, Chinese Democracy is a bold record. But it is also surprisingly accessible. Sure, some of the production choices are questionable, but much like the Illusions (which featured some questionable production choices as well) the songs are there. And the songs are good. If you are expecting Appetite for Destruction part two, you are going to be disappointed. If you are expecting the greatest record of all time, you will also be disappointed. But if you are looking for a diverse and creative hard rock record, look no further. You will find yourself playing air guitar and letting your inner Axl loose in no time.

Recommended Songs: "Better", "There Was a Time", "This I Love", "Prostitute"

The 411: Many people will have their minds made up about Chinese Democracy before they even listen to it. This is understandable. Axl has burned a lot of bridges and the expectations for this record are out of this world. However, if people are willing to give it a chance, they’ll find a lot of what made Guns N’ Roses such a phenomenon to begin with: gritty hard rock, soaring ballads, and a volatile unpredictability.
411 Elite Award
Final Score:  9.0   [  Amazing ]  legend

Sure as hell didn't read like a 9.0 review.

Didn't sound like one when I listened to the thing either.

Bottom line: everyone takes out of this record exactly what they put into it. It is absolutely impossible to be objective here. But I don't know if ANYONE will still be listening to it a year from now.

This is great, people have to realize that this is the modern GNR, stop comparing it to the past cause the past is the past, I can't stop listening to about 8 gems on this album, classic in my eyes, and everybody hating on it is prejudice without giving it a good listen, I listened to it before reading any reviews, now I see the hate and I say "what the hell are you smoking"

I cant believe Im saying this. I love this album.

I liked that there were Gibson banner ads for the Slash signature model that popped up during this review.

And wow... was "Chinese Democracy" a snoozefest!

This review is stupid. I enjoy the album, but seriously, why would you say Catcher in the Rye is a good tune, it's boring as all hell. So is Shackler's Revenge.

I, for one, love this album. Some songs are not as good as others, but every Gunners album is like that.

There Was A Time is the best thing since spaghetti!

Justin is not impressed. Only fanboys who wanked it to Axl are. Chinese Democracy was better when it never was.

However, if people are willing to give it a chance, they’ll find a lot of what made Guns N’ Roses such a phenomenon to begin with:
A lot of what made GNR a phenomenon was the entire band not just AXL and a bunch of replacements. This album is weak sounding.

Upon first listen, I am not impressed. I'll give it a few more listens in the next day or two and my opinion is subject to change. Sometimes you have to listen to an albuma few times and let it soak in before you really begin to appreciate it.

one thing to consider about Catcher.... it was orignaly written around Brian mays' guitar parts recorded back in 99. and its obvious he just had the new guys overdub..and add a few new fills here and there if youve heard the original mix

Album of the year and every bit as amazing and legendary as I thought it would be. There are not two songs on this album that sound alike. Each one is a fucking gem and a modern classic. "This I Love" in particular is absolutely chilling. It's really grown on me and become my favorite track on the album.

Record of the year. Give it some Grammy nods. It's gonna be big.

Not Appetite for Destruction which what I was hoping for, more of a Use your Illusion type of tracks. Really really good, with the down side that the guitar solos, as good as it is, it isn't Slash.

Thx Peter!!!
This must be the first honest rewiev I've read so far!
Music is very mush about feelings to me! And I have not been headbanging, air-guitaring and screaming away this much since I first discovered Guns and U2 waaaay back in time :)
Just don't care what's been said or done over the years! This album does it for me! Well done GUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great review man, it's nice to see someone actually give the album a fair listen before making up their mind on it. There's been far too many people(including ones who write for this site) who decided long ago to trash it for the hell of it. In my opinion Axl's proved a lot of people wrong with this record.

Great review Peter.

When I listened to it on My space the first time through, I was not impressed and then I downloaded it this morning and I am liking more songs than I did. Give it a few listens before you decide people.

This record should be rated as a 5,mediocre at best. But that is what happens when you have a biased fan boy writing the review.

It's a good album, if you want to see fanboys wait for the amazon.com reviews... and have fun and read how that fabulous def leppard album that sounds nothing def leppard is one of the top 3 dl albums.

Color me pleasantly surprised. I really like this album

At first listen I hated it. I was expecting the old guns n' roses sound. That was wrong of me. I listened again... and this time with no expectations. Now, listening to it as an Axl solo album instead of Gn'R I have to say it's AMAZING. It's ground breaking. The songs don't go where you expect them to. The entire CD is huge and sounds like a Rock Opera on steroids. Axl's voice is huge. New rock bands should be hanging their heads in their lack of creativity next to this CD. Not saying other bands aren't talented, but they haven't tried to break the mold these days... Axl has. It's a like it or hate it album. I went from dislike (as I didn't give it a chance based on my expectations), to Oh My God! THIS TRULY ROCKS! After you're done bashing it, give it another try... as something to listen to, not something to compare to the past.

This album was great. Honestly most people complaining are those who either already wanted this album to do bad ( like the 12 people on this site who said nobody would care about it), or are just pissed at Axl.

Posted By: J.J.T. (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 11:58 AM

i've listened to it 3 times now, going in with zero expectations and i must say it's Axl Roses' "Smile". Much like the brian wilson disc its a challenge to the listener. it's not Appetite, but it is good. Its alot to digest and that will turn alot of people off understandably.

I bet you a hundred dollars that in three months, when the hype has died down, not a single one of you will still be listening to this album.

its a decent AXL ROSE solo album, but not good enough to bare the name of GUNS N ROSES

Posted By: guest (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 02:55 PM

This album is bad. Not cause its "new GNR", it just flat out sucks. The fact that it IS GNR, or as me and my friends call it Axl+Buckethead, makes it even worse. GNR would have been better remembered had this album never been released.

Posted By: Butters4Prez (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 03:04 PM

Well i just finished listening to it right now, alone no intrusions just me and the music and honestly?its an amazing albun ,it dont sound repetitive, sounds current, AXL sounds great and im satisfied, but in my opinion its AXL solo proyect, but its one of the better albums that have come out in years, if you take it like i take it as a solo record you would enjoy it inmmensely, if you think of it like a GNR record you just gonna start comparing it with what was before, it its what it is AXL record...

Posted By: Gunner08 (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 03:34 PM

this was axl's vision all along.. and it does not disappoint..this is a very very good album that deserves recognition and a chance from everybody. and sources tell me that part 2 is even better.. watch out for that in 2010..you heard it hear

Posted By: Gunner (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 04:26 PM

It rocks about as much as sixty year old Elton John at a gay bar on a Sunday afternoon. I mean, it's an OK record if you think of it along those terms...but you have to be INTO those terms, and I'm not. It's no Appetite, that's for DAMN sure.

Posted By: Guest#6867 (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 04:35 PM

so...14 years to make a sub-par dissapointing album. my faith in modern music is dead.

Posted By: Guest#4788 (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 04:46 PM

I just got the album and on the drive home I was pulled over by the police (I wonder if that's an omen?)

I'm glad it doesn't sound like Axl picked up where he left off in 1993. There's some really cool stuff going on in it and some really cliche stuff, specifically the lyrics...but the good thing is, Axl's vocals are so good he could sing "Valley of the Jolly Green giant" and it would sound cool.

It's not worth 15 years waiting, but I think most people got on with their lives. I certainly wasn't waiting, but of course I bought it as soon as I could. I read it cost $13 million to make, personally, I don't care, it cost me $11 at Best Buy.

I like it alot. I think it's awesome, hopefully it won't take 15 years for the next one.

Everytime you listen to Chinese Democracy you hear something new...like a guitar beat , panio or drum beat in a song. You think..why didn't I hear this before ? Its an album where you can actually listen over & over , and discover new great things.

It is the album of the year. And hopefully the new kids jump on to it. They may like what they hear from it.

Anyone else's copy have a weird skip on track 8 at like 1:19 into the song?

Posted By: The Jerk (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 05:31 PM

ho-hum...i've had it for a bit now. i guess you can call it a perk for working where i do (although it's not much of a perk to be given this. it should be handed out to everybody for free). i listened too it for a week without listening to anything else, because i wanted to let it 'sink in.' not a chance. i put it away after that week.

this album did not grow on me one bit. it only became more boring. the more i listened the more i could hear the thinness in Axl's voice also. people keep saying it's a grower, and there is a lot to chew on. let me just say, overdubs do not make an album complex; just overblown.

thank god for protools. we get to hear more and more music that is so compressed and fake, and we can try to cover up a singers shot vocals. sadly protools can't even save Axl's high notes...he's shot.

As a huge fan of Guns and Roses since 1988, I was skeptical about the new lineup and the endless delays were infuriating. It is certainly true that no album is worth a 15 year wait, but this one comes damn close. I absolutely love it! I'vr heard the leaks prior to today, but for some reason the tunes sound better together on a single disc. I bought it this morning and I have been listenning to it over and over. In my opinion, it is far better then the Use Your Illusion albums and may very well be one of the greatest rock albums ever made. Welcome back Axl! We missed ya...

Posted By: fluke (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 06:45 PM

I love the new album. But I must admit that I would love to see the original Appetite-era band get together for a single show to play some classics- no over-the-top synthesizers or horn sections like the Use Your Illusion tour, just 5 guys playing fast, loud rock.

Posted By: fluke (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 06:49 PM

"album" of the "year" ?

Rise Against's Appeal To Reason absolutely MURDERED this gigantic piece of Industrial Shit to DEATH

"one of the greatest albums ever made"

Now this is getting even more ridiculous

If THIS indus dub boring thing is "one of the greatest albums ever" then count Miles Cyrus' one the same !

Chinese Democracy was exactly what i wanted it to be -- 8 more songs that sounded like 6 songs that were leaked ages ago. It's what I want out of Axl now that he's older... some harder rock, lean more on the ballads.

This isn't the Guns n Roses of 22 years ago; this isn't even the GnR of 17 years ago when the Use Your Illusions came out. This is Axl, and what came out wasn't really so different than what the leaks pointed at. Not shocking, not amazing, just a solid set of songs. Who knew.

i thought it sucked i mean the title track is alright but of of the songs suck but i never liked Rose much anyways

Posted By: Crue (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 08:33 PM

this is one of the best albums ever made. the only song they messed up is catcher in the rye. they should have left in brian mays guitar solos as of the last leak. it was classic and way better. also the weird piano part in the middle messed it up to. that was my favorite part in the last leak. but still a good song.

Posted By: mq (Guest)  on November 23, 2008 at 09:15 PM

I gotta say, AMAZING album...i was cautiously optimistic about the album for a lonnnnng time but it does NOT disapoint! "Street of Dreams", "better" are among the many many classics on this CD. Good job Axl

Posted By: guest (Guest)  on November 24, 2008 at 01:59 AM

It's growing on me, slow but sure. "Better" was the only song I let myself hear before today, and I loved that one from first listen. The rest is taking some time, but it's kept me from turning it off so far.

THIS IS NOT GUNS N ROSES. This is THE AXL ROSE PROJECT. As a first albumn, this isnt a bad one. However, seeing as Axl is a little cunt and truly believes the world revolves around him, Ill be boycotting this piece of shit.

Posted By: CM Wolf (Guest)  on November 24, 2008 at 09:24 AM

As a GNR album, it is not the greatest, as an Axl and Friends Album it is actually really good. Axl sounds great, and I hope it is him and not voice boxes or anything. Listen to it with an open mind, and see. It is not everyone's taste, heck when I first listen to it I was not sure because of the industrial parts in the beginning, but as a musician myself I can appreciate this album. The ballads on here are great too. Reminds me of Use your Illusion.

Just one more comment to Everette - You're pretty well the only person I know that shit-canned Axl's vocals for this CD. Of all the things that people have discussed here, the vocals are unquestionably in great standing.
In my opinion Axl sounds like he may have had some lessons and is not only able to do what he used to, but has taken it to a new level.
I must say, I worry that some of these vocals could have been from Axl 10-15 yrs ago, and perhaps he can't still pull it off... but that's yet to be seen.
From what I can tell, the vocals on some of these songs are so up front and in your face it's hard to believe they may have been digitally enhanced or corrected. I hope not... Either way, they sound amazing on this CD.

Obviously, there's some places where they had to be enhanced for effect, like when he's singing with an entire choir of Axl's on 'Scraped'.

OK, I'm done.

Posted By: Atom Strange (Guest)  on November 24, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Axl's vocals sound nothing like they did years ago. He sounds really thin on the high notes. He sounds like he is singing in a strained falsetto. The lower singing sounds great though. I could almost guarantee some doctoring up, because I saw them live last year and the album sounds much better then live.

In the early 90s, he also sounded better in the studio, but he ran around a lot, and he would get winded. His voice just isn't as strong as it once was. He used to have a high pitched scream, but now he sings in a high falsetto. I'd say because he was having so many vocal problems on the UYI tours that the voice coach he now has told him he would have to actually sing and not scream.

The vocals are not horrible, but it also does not sound like the early Axl.

Look at all these haters.

To all haters, kiss my ass!

This album is not a masterpiece but is a great album.

just bitching in your moms basement eating hot pockets watching gay porn bashing on Chinse democracy.

Listen fools, Axl proved he doesnt need slash, adler, duff, izzy, to make a good album.

the tracks This i love, title track, street of dreams, better are all bonafide classics and so many more.

Obama said we need change and you got it. if axl would of stayed with the original formula it would have been repitive. this fits in and is not nu metal or gay. its rock n rolla!

to quote Axl: suck on that!

it's radio rock. it's not rock n' roll. sure it's great compared to Nickelback, but Nickelback and all the other piles of shit on the radio isn't worth listening too to begin with. i'd listen to this over everything played on the radio, but i don't listen to the radio as it is. i go find real rock n' roll worth listening too. if you want real rock n' roll, listen to Confederacy Of Horsepower, Bourbon Flame, The Cowboy Prostitutes, Broken Teeth, The Hell City Glamours, and there are many more...these guys are keeping rock n' roll alive though.

I must retrack my previous comments about the new Guns N Roses album I just gave it another listen and I find it a major dissapointment from previous albums. I also must apologize for me and robbie's immature behavior towards you great Guns N Roses fans who were dissappointed with the album as well, you fans are very well entitled to your opinion about the album as it is not our right to flame you people just because you didn't like the album. If any of you go out of your way to critizice us, we understand, in fact we probably deserve it for the way we've been acting. So again I apologize for the rude behavior and hope the next album will be better.

Thank You.

As a long time fan of the REAL "GUNS N'ROSES" (an album NOT written with IZZY And having ultra gifted legends like Slash and Duff O Mac is NOT a "G'N'R" album by any means) , I was still opened to give some attention and love to that one .

I'm just a sucker for good music and rock especially .

I've tried HARD to LOVE that one but not a SINGLE TRACK managed to get my attention and making me headbanging and taping my foot on the ground (the signs I'm having fun and enjoying the stuff I'm listening to) .

After all the talks and shit by Megalomaniac Axl Rose I was expecting way way way more than this crap Indus thingy (a poor old man's version of NIN) .

It's a super massive FAIL and easily one of the most bland , lame and uneffective albums of the YEAR .

This album isn't even the best album to come out this week, much less one of the greatest albums of all-time. Paul McCartney's project The Fireman takes that honor with 'Electric Arguments.'

McCartney's album has some samples, beats, effects, and multitracking going on also, and it's actually complex and artistic. 'Chinese Democracy' is neither. It's just a waste of time.

I thought Metallica's Death Magnetic was a great comeback album until I heard this! Y'all wanna hate, but Axl is getting on up in age. OF COURSE his voice isn't going to sound the same. I think it's foolish to compare 2008 G'n'R and Metallica to older efforts by different lineups of the band just by the fact that people age. Both bands have successfully revived their old sound at the same time as evolving, but I just felt more HEART in G'n'R's new record. Sure, it's radio-friendly (who knew?), but it has the emotion that Death Magnetic seemed to be lacking. Yeah, I'll probably still be listening to this in November 2009!

But I don't know if ANYONE will still be listening to it a year from now.

I agree with that in parts. However, nearly all music has a shelf life these days. I don't think that this will be timeless like their past works but this really is a great album for the time being

So what about the bands who have aged and haven't changed? The bands that have stayed true to who they were?

Axl has created the very creation that he set out to destroy: overproduced shit.

Sure people and bands grow older, but Metallica and Guns N' Roses lost track to what they were claiming in the beginning. Axl can sing in 'Sorry' about kicking someone's ass, but seriously, it's all bite. He got punched out by Tommy Hilfiger.

I can name tons of bands who didn't give into to new trends to make a buck. I can name tons of bands who grew older but none the more inspired and destructive. Some bands remember why they started, and they stay true to their mission. Axl didn't. He's just another rock n' roll primadonna.

This album could be called "Pro Tools Gone Wrong". I love Axl, and couldn't give a shit that the rest of the band isn't here, but the facts are Izzy Stradlin could write a song.
A bunch of six minute songs doesn't create an epic album. There are a distinct lack of HOOKS on this disc, which is something I would've expected from a rushed album, not one 15 years in the making.
Better, T.W.A.T., This I Love are all great songs. Catcher in the Rye and Prostitue are meandering messes. Both six minutes of absolute nothing.
There is just so muchlayering that at some points, it created "noise", and not music (Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Sorry and Madagascar).
I just feel like instead of writing catchy songs, Axl tried to dupe us into thinking this was a great album. Axl is reaching for something great here, and I admire him for that, but sometimes the best thing you can write is just a good ol' fashioned song.

If you are a guy and you dont like guns n roses, you are gay

what a dumbass comment, legend.

if you are a guy, and you like this whiney, bitchy, ballad singing version of guns n roses, you are gay.

for those who like the original guns n roses and admit this shit sucks, i guess you have big balls, because others can't seem to realize that this is a bunch of shit.

Sing of listening to whining 16 year olds who seem to forget that this is what happens with bands. They mature, they're style changes. If you want manufactured pop that never changes album to album I suggest you listen to RnB

Honest review, unlike most where most of the review is spent slandering Axl instead of talking about the music. Its a great album, and nothing like the old GN'R. Thing is, Axl would have been critisied if he'd made an Appetite style album;
'Oh he's trying to sound like old Guns hahaha!
And now a lot of the attitude is
'Oh he's trying to sound different from old Guns haha'
Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Its a great album.

I am a huge Guns Fan, but its just not the same. Dont get me wrong the music is good, but I think the magic of GNR was those first guys, and being a kid and hearing those killer lyrics and damn they were just different than anyone else-I dont think the heart is there anymore. I didnt like seeing or hearing Duff and Slash in VR either, When the music means something to you I guess I just dont like change.
