In order to give an unbiased review of this album, I had to get into the right frame of mind. Upon my first listen, I felt something was missing. So I downed a couple of shots of Jack, made myself an Apple-tini and turned the lights down. My makeshift club going experience helped mimic the ideal situation to listen to a pop dance record like this. Cue my wife to turn the lights on and off and it is go time.

Now this is the part of the review where I give you all the obligatory back story of the downward spiral Britney Spears endured over the past year and a half. Let’s see where do I begin? She divorced her ultra talented dancer/rapper/wrestler/baby making husband Kevin Federline. She then went the logical route of spending her time clubbing with sultry singer Paris Hilton without her panties on for all of us to see.

The unraveling continued by her spending a night getting her head shaved. She followed that truly punk experience by attacking members of the paparazzi with her umbrella-ella-eh-eh. Her numerous run ins with the paparazzi continued by running over one of their feet and then sleeping with one of them. They were her best friends, so it would only make sense to take the next step and become friends with benefits. She made all the tabloids more money and was stalked by them because of it.

Personally, her entire family became more concerned for her well being, but she continued to cut them all out of her life. She was acting like a spoiled brat. The most damaging thing she did was shun her children and seemingly made some very bad decisions to the point K-Fed became father or the year. She did not show up to child custody hearings and lost her kids because of it.

Musically, she produced an album 2007’s Blackout against the wishes of her record company and shunned many a-list producers and a potential collaboration with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. This first single “Gimme More” was performed notoriously on the 2007 MTV awards where she looked like she was in a coma on stage. None of her exploits hurt the album due to morbid curiosity as Blackout was well received by critics and fans.

At the start of 2008, Britney’s father was legally given the right to keep her on restriction indefinitely, which may have saved her life and career. She started to get back to her pre pregnancy weight and guest starred on How I Met Your Mother. She has been out of the public eye working hard on her sixth studio album Circus.

Circus helps her grow from pop princess to “Queen of Pop” knocking Michael Jack-er Madonna from her throne. It is full of well produced dance tracks and two ballads. On this album, she collaborates with some well known producers (thankfully it is Timbaland free) and writers who help her claim her throne.

Circus picks up where 2007’s Blackout left off, just more refined and confident. Her confidence and relaxed feelings are shown on songs like “Womanizer”, “Circus”, “Kill the Lights” and “Blur.” Add in a strong ballad called “Out from Under” and you have a top notch pop record that will spawn many hits.

The first eight tracks on this album are very strong pop songs, while the second half loses its footing. Vocally Britney will never be compared to Mariah Carey, she may not even sing as well as Drew Carey. Most of the production hides her vocal inadequacies with a vocoder, but that is something we have all become accustomed to in pop music these days as the visual is more important than the talent.

The best songs on Circus are the ones which Britney takes on her critics and address her problems head on. These songs were clearly chosen to help enhance the appeal to a comeback album. The first single “Womanizer” is already a mega hit. “Womanizer” ushers in the album with a siren warning you that the pop diva is back. It also features the line “You say I’m crazy, I got your crazy” in a not so subtle way to attack all the pundits who think she is a whack job.

Next is the title track “Circus” produced by super hot pop producers Benny Blanco and Dr. Luke, creators of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” It is a song about being the center of attention. It has a nice slow tempo during the verses and then kicks into gear with the chorus “All eyes on me/in the center of the ring/just like a circus.” It helps to show that part of her downward spiral was caused by her addiction to the spotlight.

Song #3 is a ballad “Out From Under” produced and written by Guy Sigsworth, who wrote Seal’s “Crazy” and was part of the indie favorite Frou Frou. This is the logical third single and will be a huge hit. “Out From Under” is about gaining confidence after the break up of a relationship.

“Kill the Lights” starts off with a special announcement declaring the pop princess the “Queen of Pop.” This song takes on all the haters, mostly the paparazzi who made the last year hell for her. “Mister Photographer, I think I’m ready for my close up/Too wide/Make sure you get my good side/Pick one/These people all want to be me/Is that money in your pocket or are you happy to see me.” This turns the tables on the paparazzi and the people looking to make money on Britney’s numerous public displays. It has a great bass line that might even get me to dance. It is produced by Danja, who produced most of Britney’s Blackout album, and is one of the highlights of the album.

The next song is “If U Seek Amy”, produced by Max Martin, creator of her first single “Baby One More Time.” It features Spears signature way of singing “baby” and is about a hopeful sexual encounter with a woman, which is all the rage these days. It is bouncy and fun.

The final two highlights of this album are the trance style “Unusual You” and the slow building “Blur.” “Unusual You” is about Spears expecting her lover to leave her, but he surprises her by staying with her despite her flaws. “Blur” is about waking up from a drunken sexual encounter and trying to piece together the sordid details. The music on “Blur” is just off kilter enough it feels like you are waking up from a hangover with a pounding headache and a cup full of regret.

On Circus, Britney is at her worst when she gets sexual. Maybe it is because she is no longer the forbidden fruit she once was and is now damaged goods. Sexy pop stars have become stale in a genre that often relies on sex to sell records. “MMM Papi” is childish and gives me a headache with its frenetic pace. “Mannequin” is annoying on so many levels I can’t even come up with a comprehensive description as to what exactly I hate about it.

“Lace and Leather” is a P-Funk style sex romp that again loses its luster because of its sexual nature. Again, it is hard to swallow this shtick anymore and Britney needs to embrace her age, instead of trying to be sexy and frank about fantasies and whips and chains.

The pinnacle of crappiness is the final track, “My Baby.” It is a ballad presumed to be about her sons and is a plea that she really misses her kids. It could be a little more emotional and feels like she just through it on the record to prove she really wants to be a good mother in the court of public opinion. Coming from Britney, it may be too little too late. It may be the worst ode since Tommy Lee’s “Brandon.”

For the most part this will be Britney’s comeback album and it is a top notch pop record through and through. It is at its best when she takes on her haters and at its worst when she gets sexual. Most tracks will be huge hits on pop radio and Britney’s horrible year will mostly be forgotten. It will be interesting to see how she will handle the spotlight in the year to come. So leave Britney alone, Dammit!!!

BEST: "Kill the Lights"; "Womanizer"; "Blur"; "Out From Under"
GOOD: ""Circus"; "Unusual You"; "If U Seek Amy"
OK: "Shattered Glass"
AWFUL: "MMM Papi"; "Mannequin"; "My Baby"; "Lace and Leather"

The 411Circus is a strong effort by Britney Spears as she attempts to claw her way back up to the top of the a-list. The album is at its best when she attacks her critics and awful when she talks about sex. After the eighth song the album really is not good, but for pop music this is not all bad. She also loses points for the over use of computers to fix her voice. She now is back to the lovable mindless Barbie type Frankenstein that needs direction to survive.

Final Score:  6.0   [ Average ]  legend

"the visual is more important than the talent" That quote right there sums up EVERYTHING that has destroyed the music industry. It's about looks and entertainment with musical talent not even a requirement anymore.

"It may be the worst ode since Tommy Lee’s “Brandon.”"

I Don't understand, That is the greatest Ballad of the 90's? These lyrics speak to me.

"brandon I love you, you are the one brandon my son
you run around, and chase the clouds,
i only want you to be yourself
forget me not, you're all i've got
as you can see you are the one, brandon my son
your mother gave birth to you with love inside
she had candlelight and songs of life
brandon I love you, I love her, she is your mom
true love is ours, nobody else
i only want you to be yourself,
and when i'm gone, don't cry for me

we'll always be one...you are my son"

FU Tommy Hater!

I think you meant after eight seconds the album isn't any good. And it's not a case of needing computers to FIX her voice as much as it is to GIVE her a voice. Complete worthless dross.

If U Seek Amy has a different meaning. Say the song title a few times fast and you have it. Let's just say you need to know how to spell to understand it.

I downloaded the album but have not got in the mood for the whole album. The reviewer has a good point that pop is basically based on a package rather than musical talent. Never will I expect Mimi's vocals on Britney...you'll be setting yourself up for disappointment, People with great voices but not the pop look are looked over time after time...as an example Kelly Price...vocals, but not the sexy look they are trying, When was the last time you heard about her?

She's old???!!

She's as old as Beyonce, who always dresses like a fat pig.

And did you look at "Put a ring on it" video? Beyonce is trying to be all hot when she is "so old".

You have no argument.

I have nothing to say. I won't watch any of her music videos on this album, but she is still no.1. I love 'womanizer' That's the song that turn me on about her. Britney has been on an off with her music, but I still like her, even on trouble time for her right now. Keep it up Britney! you can do it. Please no sex nudity in any of your videos.

I've love, and always will love, Britney Spears. So I'll levy with you on some of the tracks.I can understand that MMM Papi, at times, can be annoying. Mannequin is up there too. But I don't see how My Baby can be placed with them? My Baby is a nice, touching song which addresses the significance of her kids in her life. Lace and Leather is hot. I could (and have) pictured Brit in a SNM suit. There is nothing wrong with her being sexy. She can apply the pressure on me any day.

The title track is slick snappy and dancy with delicious rythym and "make you wanna get up and dance " energy. Out from Under is beautiful and heartfelt and Britney's vocals suit it well. It is an instanly likeable song that grows on you more and more til you love it. Shattered Glass is sung with strength and energy and the vocals are not tampered with. It is very catchy and is a grower too. The bass in Lace and Leather is great and sets an unusual tone in the album giving it a genreless twist. Unusual You is a beautiful melody that ranks with the greatest love songs of recent times, it had me in tears several times, I bet it did the same for Britney. Bloodshy and Avanti are my fave producers and this cements their position even more. Mannequin is a futuristic dance track that feels like Britney expressing her true self. Its jumpy and distorted and the withdrawn high pitched vocals are pure genius in this tale of life as a dressed up doll. Quicksand has the best Britney vocals of the album and should have been on all editions, I would love to see her recording this song in the video if it is a single(doubtful). I think it is very different although it appears quite ordinary at first, fantastic song. If You Seek Amy has so many levels I can hardly fit them in. It suggests an alter ego called Amy who was the going out and partying Britney who shocks people and also the nastiness of the people seeking Britney in those days and the crtics etc etc , Its a chant and a mock of the public and papps, its a mock of herself as Amy too. And she is asking if you are sick of her - If you sick a me? Great song... Rock me in is a superb driving song, tell me you don't want to jump on a motorbike during this song played loud.My Baby is actually ok, it just starts off a bit scary cos of the high notes. Phonography is such a catchy sdong it should be a single, it is so sing-a-long but in a great great way. Trouble has another great mid-range vocal from Britney, pleasant. I am not realy into the other two -Womanizer or Kill the Lights as they are too chanty for me but I love the rythym in both. thats why I think Circus will break a few records and the singles and videos will do extremely well too.

Hello. If you bothered to say the words "If You Seek Amy" really fast you would surely realise that she is not singing about a sexual affair with a woman...want a hint? (F.U.C.K ME)

-Britney needs to embrace her age, instead of trying to be sexy and frank about fantasies and whips and chains-

Britney is only 27 years old. Are you saying you have to be 17 or 18 to be able to speak about your sexuality and have it be realistic? That's ridiculous. Britney knows more about sex than any 17-21 year old and I'd rather listen to a woman with years under her belt be sexy than some young practically teenager who has much much to learn. Saying you have to grow up and stop being overtly sexual at 27...sheesh, thats around the age I think its more appropriate!

First off when I get these cds I do not have the benefit of reading press junkets and other reviews to get the inside meanings of songs. I listen to them and take what I can and then write about it. All of you had two days or more of reading and listening to garner the FUCK Me thing.

Secondly, maybe saying her age was wrong. The sex world is a road she has traveled and I am sure will continue to be salacious going forward. I felt that this album's better moments were when she attacked her haters and was weak when she got sexy.

It felt like those songs were coming from the slutty girl at the party who has hooked up with every one but is still desparate for more.

I felt that the first 6 songs were amazing. And I loved the first 3 bonus songs. Phonography being the best bonus track.

Womanizer is addictive as hell and a favourite out of my 300 songs on ipod.

The reviewer really nailed it when he said he loved how Circus (song) had nice slow tempo and went faster in the chorus. Loved it I did.

If U Seek Amy at first thought it was about Amy Winehouse but eventually figured out the real meaning that despite all the haters, all (boys&girls) still want to have sex with her.

Loved it's pounding beats and according to a poll on her official site, its the 50-odd thousand fan's fav.

I(f) (u) See(c) Ka k) My (me)

Out From Under should be her next hit leaving Amy for summer. The ballad is her best attempt at singing from the heart and amazingly and its believable.

Shattering Glass right from "what she everything" is a fantasic song with its theme of regret and how the life of him will be like shattered glass. Really good beats in it and the beginning where she starts singing really wows me.

Kill The Lights seems like an eeriy, darker pop version of Maneater (by Nelly Furtado) and I quite admire the way she takes confronts all the haters.

Im trying to understand blur, unusual you and mannequin. Don't like mmm papi, my baby and lace 'n' leather.

Loved radar. Rock me in sounds like a fresh of breath air and was very flowing.

Phonography was the best bonus track and was incredibly catchy and Brit should serio look into that song as an official song w/ video.

She was on X-Factor and mimed the whole peformance and didnt dance that well apart from when she finishing the break-down part.

Behind stage, she infuriated Simon Cowell by refusing the acts or even himself and the other judges from talking/approaching/watching her reherse/getting autographs.

Even when asked by Simon if she watched the peformances of the act, she said no and he was furious.

Each live week, a guest act (mega famous act) comes and coaches/works with the acts. Britney refused to do so and missed rehersals and was late for the big performance.

And when asked by XFactor presenter, Dermot O' Leary what advice could she give to the acts, "keep doing it" ^^ was her "brillant" (sarcasm) advice.

Music wise brillant but life-wise not so much. If she cuts her diva-ish crap out, she might have been the best guest act ever. Mariah Carey being the best said acts.

Britney, Thanks for sharing your talent with the world over and over again! Your voice has definitely made my life easier! PLEASE don't ever stop! We love you! I work hard everyday and don't don't have the luxuries you do but I'm seriously so thankful for you. I don't even care if you are just a product of the industry, can't sing live? don't care, whatever Britney Spears is makes me happy, reading about you is fun too, the funny skits on madtv, watching your life exploited on tv, random acts like kissing madonna, singing naked for womanizer, you're so crazy, and fun to read, watch, and amazingly awesome to LISTEN to, it rocks you were born!
