Lamb of God - Wrath Review
Posted by Matt Shoemaker on 02.24.2009
The Virginia metal quintet brings us their first album in over two years, promising that they have topped themselves with their new release, Wrath. But does the album live up to the band's claims? 411’s Matt Shoemaker checks in with the full review!

During the recording of Lamb of God’s new album, the band frequently updated their fans on the recording process, and what to expect from the album. Chris Adler stated, “This album is going to surprise a lot of people. Typically bands that get to where we are in our career begin to slack off, smell the roses, and regurgitate… No one wants to hear a band member hyping a new record. ‘Wrath’ needs no hype. We have topped ourselves, and on February 24, you will feel it.” Guitarist Mark Morton’s comments on the musical style of the album also increased expectations, saying, “…’Sacrament’ was a really, really dyamic record… and it was heavily produced. This one’s really raw and real sounding, from every angle, and we’re celebrating the imperfections on this record.” Morton stated how the album was “natural and organic sounding, which in itself, is kind of a revolution these days, when kids are making pro audio-sounding recordings in their dorm rooms, or on their laptops, and cutting and pasting verses and choruses. It’s no longer cutting edge to make a completely space aged, robotic sounding record. I think it’s almost fresh to make one that sounds like an actual band played it. Don’t get me wrong… it still sounds airtight and rehearsed, because it’s all those things. But it’s just real.”
With those words, Wrath almost instantly became one of my most anticipated records of the near future. Morton and Adler were dead on accurate in their statements. This album is real. There is a very natural, fresh sound to every track on the album, and the band even threw in a little bit of musical experimentation along with it, including something most fans of the band thought they would never hear, acoustic guitars. The opening track, “The Passing”, begins with an acoustic piece that slowly descends into heavier guitars and an ominous, foreboding drum section. The second track, “In Your Words”, immediately reveals what the intro was building up to, as the album comes in at full force, with a typical Lamb of God guitar riff, powerful and catchy, as the drums pound away behind it, including one of Chris Adler’s best drum fills ever recorded.
Randy Blythe has been known, over the past few albums, to add new vocal styles to some tracks, in what would seem to be an effort to freshen things up with the band’s sound. He immediately shows off his new style, a strained, higher-pitched scream, over the verses of the track. Calling it a scream wouldn’t be entirely accurate, come to think of it. It’s more of a yell. There’s no real aggression to it, like his shrill screams, which also show up on this track. His growls still sound incredible, as well. Full of guttural power, Blythe seems to have the ability to command the attention of the listener over the rest of the music.
And that’s just the opening track. The rest of the album takes the listener of an incredible journey through some of the best metal heard in some time in the genre. The first single off of the album, “Contractor”, is an exercise in sheer speed and power, as it immediately jumps into a grinding, pulse-pounding mosh pit anthem, before slowing down into another incredible buildup to the essential headbanger’s breakdown. “Grace” starts with another Lamb of God rarity, a melodic guitar section. This sounds like something you would have heard off of DevilDriver’s latest album, but it doesn’t last long, as, like most songs on this album tend to do, everything explodes in at once, this time with a moderately paced, power driven guitar riff, with steady, crushing drums underneath.
Musically, and vocally, the band is as good as ever. There are a lot of the band’s signature sounds on the album, especially in the guitar riffs. I don’t know the proper way to describe them, but especially moving into the Sacrament era, the band focused on these types of riffs a lot. Chris Adler is as sharp as ever on the drums, offering incredible speed, precision, and technicality on almost every song. His drum fills seem to get better over every song, and even when he’s not doing anything spectacular on the drums, he still manages to make the drums one of the driving forces of the band. Blythe, as well, has still got that “it” factor that makes his vocals so unique. The man looks intimidating enough, but once you hear that incredible, guttural growl breach his lips, he manages to match the intensity of his look.
The 411: The band more than backed up their claims that they have topped themselves. This album is how a real heavy metal album should sound. From beginning to end, there is not one minute of the eleven songs I did not enjoy.
I hope you're right, I'm picking that shit up today - Can't wait!!

The album is still streaming on the band's myspace, as of this moment:

The day that Lamb of God gets exposed as the fucking shitty poseur band that they are is the day I smile and go "ha, knew it from day fucking one." Randy's voice is awful and forced, the guitar work could be so much better considering Mark and Willie have shown that they CAN do better on earlier LoG albums (and have chosen to dumb it down considerably over the course of TWO albums), Adler's drumming is generic metalcore bullshit, and...oh yeah, I forgot that there even WAS a bassist. Sorry, John, but you should probably stick up for yourself next time during the mixing process. Awful crap, some of the worst "metal" I've heard this side of BFMV and Trivium.

There is not one minute of the eleven songs that I could understand what was coming out of the singer's mouth.

It's great stuff. You get immediate impact and rewards for repeat listens. My only complaint is the over use of standard verse-chorus-verse song structure. Some of the chorus vocal hooks flatten the awesomeness that comes before (ex: Everything to Nothing) but you are soon rewarded with more killer riffs. 8.5/10

ive heard most of the album on their myspace. dont know if its deserving of a perfect 10/10 rating. personally i thought sacrament was better, but this still sounds like a killer LoG album

i prefer randys cleaner vox on this album more than his growl on the older stuff

So far I've only heard a few tracks from the album and that shit blew me away I mean there was a point in what I think was Fake Messiah the made me start impulsively head-banging and got me so pumped, this is probably the best album that has came out this past album season.

this cd is a metal connoisseur's masterpiece, don't expect the fakers to understand

This album is a true work of art. Sacrament was a tough act to follow as it was one of the better metal albums of the last decade.
However, Wrath is everything Sacrament was and then some. Totally agree with the 10/10 rating. This is perfection

i was upset with randy on wrath willie and mark are still badasses

10...yeah right. 10 to me means a classic that will be listened to in the next 25 years. better than Sacrament but not as good as As the Palaces Burn. Lamb of God have only put out one good album and that is the afore mentioned. If this band is the "future of American metal" or "the new Pantera" we are as doomed as the Obama administration. Invest in the new Kreator or the new Cannibal Corpse
Posted By: rippedandtorn (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 11:18 AM
its gonna be hard to top new american gospel for me, that cd was f'n wonderful. but every LoG offering has been worth the sticker price thus far, i'll be checking out wrath on payday. i hope it lives up to your hype, but i'm sure i'll enjoy it even if it's not quite a 10.

God This Album Is The Shit. At Least one Band Fulfills Their Promise. They Changed It Up Quite Abit. And i Have Yet To Find It Anywhere Near Me. But The Stuff On Myspace. Is Some of The Best Metal. I have Ever Heard. Randy=Vocal GOD. Andrew Go Suck a Dick And Die

I don't know what they were talking about, this album is just as overproduced and polished as their last two. The album is solid, but not mindblowing
Posted By: Guest#4636 (Guest) on February 27, 2009 at 09:15 PM
One Fucking Head banger...An absolute legendary album....each of the track blows off every emo punk shit....taste the real metal andrew moronhead....LoG destroys Ax7m,trivium,BFMV...all that metal wannabe cry cry crap....this is the real thing...new wave of pure f**king american metal!!!!!
Posted By: Raa (Guest) on February 28, 2009 at 05:02 AM
A perfect 10? Did you actually listen to the album? Sub-par songwriting and awful lyrics. 'Wrath', overall, sounds lazy. I guess LoG has nothing left to prove.
6/10

This album is the 2nd worst from Lamb of God, right after (of course) the album sacrament. I consider this a Pantera Tribute album. It is not the Lamb of God I fell in love with back with N.A.G. Ashes is a CLASSIC. THE FUCKING STANDARD when it comes to metal. Lets look at the past for a peak into the future. There was Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, MASTER OF PUPPETS. Philosophers say historsy repeats itself. New American Gospel, As the Palaces Burn, ASHES OF THE WAKE. What happened after Ashes? Sacrament (And Justice), the hardcore fans didnt like it, and now we have The black album (Wrath)
everyone will love it, and the fans who were with Lamb of God from day 1 will be left to remember the good old times. Its all downhill from here gentlemen, and it was one hell of a ride. Too bad it had to end so soon.

Maybe some of you need to re-read my initial post. I, you see, am a REAL metalhead. Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste, Exodus, Morbid Angel, Marduk, Acid Bath, S.O.D., Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Dying Fetus, Slayer, GWAR, Kreator, Sodom, Sepultura (pre-Roots), Vader, Skinless, Kataklysm...see those? Those are what you call REAL METAL BANDS. Stop listening to MTV. Stop listening to Fuse. Stop wondering who's playing Ozzfest. Stop reading (assuming you can read beyond Dr. Seuss) MetalEdge, Kerrang, and Metal Hammer. Those are POSEUR RAGS. Pick up an issue of Terrorizer, Pit, BW&BK, or check out some fanzines, because Lamb of God is in the exact same fucking boat as BFMV, Trivium, and A7X: POSEURS.
Acid Bath FTW.

this is definetley not their best album. they use a lot more thrash and some of the songs they almost sound like pantera. i was expecting alot more from lamb of god, their last two albums rock but this is mediocre.
Posted By: shupaman (Guest) on March 02, 2009 at 03:03 PM
You guys have standards that are way too high, and a bizarre way of looking at music. For those who keep saying this sounds just like sacrament, no way. Sacrament is overall their worst album (but the few really good songs like "Requiem" and "Foot to the Throat" are probably Lamb of God's best moments. Of course no matter what they put out is going to be raising the bar in their eyes, because they aren't going to put out something they think is weak. I still think As the Palaces Burn is their best album (mainly due to the really brown guitar tone from their Framus guitars and Townsend's overall production). But as I sit here and listen to wrath all the way through for the first time, it's much better than their last two albums, because even though they aren't their best efforts like NAG and ATPB, c'mon, it's still Lamb of God, one of the best metal bands out there.

AndrewCrow, you're a douche. The music you like is fucking inlistenable. Music doesn't have to sound like complete shit to be brutal, dude. Get a clue. And as far as this comment of yours is concerned, "The day that Lamb of God gets exposed as the fucking shitty poseur band that they are is the day I smile and go "ha, knew it from day fucking one." When is that going to be? When will Lamb of God be exposed as shitty poseurs? How many successful albums from now, asshole? They've alrady had, like 5 or something, right? Go suck the blood out of a goat or something, freak!

Wow Matt..nice review.. My initial reaction is 10/10 as well but we'll see how it holds up with time..and sorry AndrewCrow, I like most of those bands you mentioned, but I really think you're way off base with your LoG analsis..you sound like a disgruntled jaded former fan who doesn't think bands like LoG should be able to grow and evolve as songwriters and musicians..where do you hear them "dumbing it down?" I hear growth and progress as the songs have better hooks, catchier riffs..every song really is top notchand omg you can actually understand what Randy is saying (most of the time) I thoroughly dig everything this band has ever put out and look forward to many more killer records like this one...
Posted By: Wil Webster (Guest) on March 04, 2009 at 05:36 PM
Gen, the music I like? Ha, it's funny...BECAUSE LAMB OF GOD RIPPED IT OFF AND MADE IT MTV-FRIENDLY. Interesting how you openly admit to not liking the real thing and preferring the overly diluted mainstream version. Record sales don't equal quality, or else Creed would be counted among the greatest bands of all-time.
And Wil, they dumbed it down. Listen to "11th Hour" (the one decent song by the band, and that's because it sounds like a combination of Pantera and every generic Gothenburg band ever) and then listen to "Redneck." Notice how one sees all three stringplayers going up and down the neck while still maintaining a catchy riff, while the other has one or two decent licks in-between generic "hey guys, I like At The Gates too" rubbish. Usually, evolution as songwriters requires you either get better at writing catchy songs or write more technically challenging pieces of work. Neither is true for LoG, as they produce shoddier work with each new release, homogenized and mass-marketed to the mall-dwelling "m3t@lh3@dz" that don't understand the importance of Carcass to just about every band they listen to. And if I come across as a jaded former fan, then I apologize. I was *NEVER* a fan. I first heard LoG through the song "Laid to Rest," which I thought was utter crap. To put it in perspective, I heard Lamb of God months after I heard Nile and Dying Fetus for the first time. Everything done by the latter bands, no matter how initially cheesy or over-the-top, makes the "heaviest" LoG song look like Britney Spears by comparison.

So because Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste, Exodus, Morbid Angel, Marduk, Acid Bath, S.O.D., Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Dying Fetus, Morbid Angel etc..play there equipment as fast as they can, bang on the drums as hard as they can, and scream like they got there hand caught in a vice, thats real metal your saying? maybe in your narrow minded mind, yes, but everyone else has there own opinions, just because you like a certain type of metal doesn't mean you have to put down metal bands who actually play their instruments good. How could you compare lamb of god to Trivium or a7x, i'm pretty sure lamb of god don't get the radio play like trivium and a7x you cock sucker.

AndrewCrow (Guest) - GWAR real metal?
Hahaha - Spinal Tap is more real than those art student posers and David St. Hubbins played on Laverne and Shirley between albums!!

I'll be the first to say that I am a huge Lamb of God fan. As the Palaces Burn is by far their best album to date, followed by (in my opinion) Ashes of the Wake. The thing about Wrath is, the band went in a very different direction. One of the main draws about past albums (excluding Sacrament) was their outstanding lyrics...very powerful, and intelligent...something you don't see across the metal genre too much. While Wrath has its moments, I don't believe Randy's delivery of the lyrics was his best. They seem forced and awkward at times. I would give this album an 8.7 out of 10.
As to Andrew...Really...? Are those REAL metal bands? I've listened to half of those bands...I laughed. They clearly come from the land of Tryingtoohard. Brutal=/=loud. As "mainstream" as you make Lamb of God sound, how do you think they got to that position? Because people LIKED listening to their music, unlike your mentioned list. It's hilarious that associate success with being "poseur".
Posted By: ColinP (Guest) on March 08, 2009 at 06:48 PM
I rarely comment on other's reviews/comments, but so many of you are off-base here, I felt I needed to throw in my $0.02. First, I come from a lengthy background in metal, and enjoy plenty of popular scene icons (Sabbath, Maiden, Slayer, pre-"Black Album" Metallica... y'know, the stuff that appeals to people who are deeply into metal as well as to the dabblers whose knowledge goes about as deep as the 20 to 25 bands Decibel is currently shilling). I admit that I am more into underground metal, as there is generally more integrity and innovation to be found there, but would never turn up my nose at a genuinely committed mainstream band like Lamb of God.
I simply have no tolerance for trailer park idiots who claim that just because a band sells a lot of albums, that means they're somehow better... better businessmen, perhaps, but metal bands, hardly. By that corny brand of capitalist logic, Def Leppard was better than Testament, Korn was better than Emperor and Trivium is better than Nevermore. It's a hilarious argument when you really think about it. And just as ignorant are underground snobs who assume that the most popular bands are always opportunist poseur hacks. Crawl out of mom's basement and open your freaking eyes. The past decade has seen truly talented bands (Mastodon, Vader, Opeth, Dillinger) actually gaining the popularity they deserve. Just because Children of Bodom's and In Flames' scene stature seems to rise the worse those once-great acts become, that doesn't mean anyone who can sell out an American headlining tour has no passion or ability to craft excellent music. It just means that Sharon Osbourne has found her true calling on reality TV, and that the promotional playing field is finally leveling again.
But, just as I am familiar enough with the genre to know that popularity has nothing to do with quality, I am familiar enough with Lamb of God to know that this is far from their strongest work. I'm very disappointed with it. "Ashes" and "Palaces" were more scathing, brutal and powerful pieces of neo-thrash, while "Sacrament" was more diverse and engaging. "Wrath" is their weakest album since "Gospel," and carries a similar whiff of embryonic Pantera worship, which is a pity, since aside from "Redneck," Log has transcended that way-too-obvious influence again and again. "In Your Words," "Grace" and "Reclamation" are up to previous standards, but there's too much samey mush in between to consider this a "virtually perfect" album. If you honestly think it is, I'm glad you enjoy it, but you obviously haven't listened to enough of what's out there to blindly assert its superiority. It may be the best YOU have heard in a while, but among the last 30 or so recent metal albums I have heard, it's near the bottom. Better luck next time.
Posted By: SoulReaper (Guest) on March 19, 2009 at 02:44 PM
honestly im so dissapointed, I expected so much more from LOG, there was not one song that i thought was really good. It truly does sound like a Pantera tribute album. :(
Posted By: nat (Guest) on April 12, 2009 at 02:26 AM
Just a reminder to Mr. Crow, just because a band is popular dosen't mean they've sold out. It just means that they found a sound people like. And if you listen to some of the greatest rock bands of all time; AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. you'll notice that their guitar parts tend to get simpler as they progress as musicians. I think that Morton's guitar riffs have gotten progressively better because he has foregone the typical insane shredder motif and gone instead the way of a true musician. Oh, and by the way, GFY.

All u people that r talkin' shit need 2 shut the fuck up. Lamb of God fuckin' RULES! Period. And Andrew Crow, I agree with the guy that said fuck u. So fuck u, u fuckin' cocksucker. U try and play that shit as well as those 5 amazing men do, cocksucker!

Hard for me to write here... I'm not american and I have the stranger taste in music you can even imagine... I have a classical background and I consider Metal as the natural consequence of Classical Music, and mostly I'm basically a Music lover, real Music not the shit I hear here and there. And let me tell you... I hate posers more than you all together say you hate. I read lot of bullshit here... I follow LoG since their first album and I love them all. And I was a Pantera's lover since their first release as well. I have musicians in my family and I was going to be a musician myself and not just a player as my brother {monster-cellist/talent as anyone else you may ever listen to... I love Apocalyptica and I would love to see him playing with them} but said to have a sensibility to Music few have and let me tell you... I don't give a shit to whoever says this album is better than another... I take the full they have done. reclamation just started and omfg it breaks with a force I never heard in their previous releases. Pantera were the same level of "reason2be" kickass music I love to listen to. If I have anything to co complain about this album is that some songs sound too much separate from the others... but can be an impression of the first listening, the sound maybe is more "open" and more various but damn... that's what I love in Music... listen to Tool to get what I mean. Of course LoG aren't Tool but you know what... I love listen to Tool as much as LoG because I hear the differences... I can listen to their Music and I can hear a whole orchestra in my head, believe me or not I'm not into drinking and getting stoned so it's all about understanding Music and loving it. Did LoG topped themselves? Oh my... I really hope not... else what will I ever listen by them again? I can give a 10 to all their albums and this gets a 10 as well. I love Godsmack a lot, their lyrics are closer to my soul maybe and they may sound like my beloved Alice in Chains {thanks to heaven and hell I can listen to something of that gives me the same emotions renewed} The fact is that as Music-lover I think musicians inspire musicians and there's a line that unites all the good musicians, those with something to say not that crap called My Bloody Valentine or those jerking idiots who claim to have made Metal step up the times. Perhaps I am out of time, maybe I am too much ahead and I certainly have a lot to learn even at 35yo but when will you ever start to not classify the quality of what a band does? They play, they create, they grow, they fail or they kick your ass. And so what? I don't have an iPod but my mp3 player now has LoG's full collection in, in cycled play-mode, together with full Godsmack as well and some Piano tributes... I cannot live without'em all!!!

I believe in freedom of opinion, i believe that its ok if mr crow doesn't like lamb of god, fine with me, but simply because he does not like them, that is no reason to comment on this site and mouth off about lamb of god. If it really bothers you to the extent you are insulting dedicated fans, then go and join some other group that support your views, otherwise, please keep your degrading comments to yourself. On another note i am in full agreement with the review and i don't judge on how technical the music is or what styles or techniques the band uses, i just know that i happen to love their music and that i think Wrath is one of their greatest albums since sacrament. If anyone happens to disagree with me, then fair deuce, but please, i would appreciate it if people respected each others opinions and dont mouth off at one another. I look forward to future albums from Lamb Of God :)

fuk anyone who says this album is not good... cuz its badass.
Posted By: blah (Guest) on October 21, 2009 at 03:21 PM
You either like it or you don't, it's as simple as that. If you have to listen to someone else's opinion to make up your mind about what you like and what you listen to, well; I think that speaks volumes about what kind of person you are.
I don't give a fuck how many metal bands you listened to or how low you think this album is compared to another bands work. That's your fucking opinion, your entitled to that just as much as someone else is entitled to their opinion.
Make up your own mind and form your own opinions about what YOU think is good, don't let some tweaker behind a screen thousands of miles away sway your opinion because they're some self-proclaimed historian of all things metal.
That's what makes us unique, diversity.
