Indie Info 10.03.02: Part 2
Posted by Eric Katz on 10.03.2002
I apology, a bunch of new releases, at least it’s not death, and other wonderful things.
So I’m back for Indie Info, part two. The news isn’t extremely bountiful this week, but nevertheless I’ve got a lot to say. I got a decent amount of feedback last week, some good and some bad. So first, I’m going to start with an apology.
Introducing
Let me begin this column with an apology. I apologize to all readers for my teaser statement last week. It was in an obnoxious manner, and it was not meant in that air. I’m not going to try to justify the line, but I do apologize for it. Secondly, I’d like to specify something for my readers. This column focuses on punk and emo music in general, and generally they are independent labeled bands. I’m also going to focus more on the better known indie bands. I’m sorry but I can’t cover every single thing that’s going on in a world of random information about random bands. The column is called Indie Info and it will provide independent information, but I can also only cover so much. If your pissed that I missed something, e-mail the story to me. I won’t guarantee I’ll put it in, because like I said this is generally punk and emo music. Finally, please don’t try to critique me for the terms I use. I received e-mails that criticized me for my use of the words “ska” and “post punk retro rock”. We all have different phrases to describe the same thing, and being that this is Eric Katz’s column, your going to see Eric Katz’s phrases. Sorry if you think I’m butchering these things; but most of my phrases are directed so the majority of people can understand them.
Top Story
This week’s top story is a collage of information related to one main story. You could say, “at least they didn’t die”, but there were many injuries this week to many top indie bands.
I reported this last week, but I received more information about it this week. Adam Lazzara, the lead singer for Taking Back Sunday, fell of the stage during Midtown’s performance on the “Best Revenge Tour”. Taking Back Sunday’s website reported that Adam dislocated his hip. TBS will not be rejoining the tour until it comes to the New York area, which is not until late October. For the time being, The Reunion Show will fill, until they get another band to do the permanent filling in.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports from AbsolutePunk.net are saying that Eben from Saves The Day was injured at a recent tour. There is no word on what the injury is, what occurred, or how long Eben will be out.
Then, Student Rick’s website reported that drummer Zach Davis slipped and broke his wrist while bowling. Student Rick will continue their current tour, but will be playing an acoustic set until Davis is set to return.
I have also received unconfirmed reports that a member of Piebald was injured at a recent show. I have no information at all on this story, but hopefully I’ll be able to follow it up next week.
And Now I Shall Pull A Rabbit From My Hat
Here’s some random information from this week on the indie scene.
The rhythm guitarist from Dynamite Boy, Danny, left the band this week. The band is looking for a new guitarist who can write and sing.
Interested in sex? So are New Found Glory and Finch. Members from New Found Glory and Finch will appear on Loveline this week on Wednesday.
Less Than Jake will be going to the studio’s soon to record a new album, called Anthem. Some of the upcoming songs on this cd have been played at recent shows, so if you’ve seen LTJ lately, you may have previewed some of the new cd.
Absolutepunk.net is reporting that The Ramones appeared on Cartoon Network’s show “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” September 29th. Apparently they were animated.
How To Waste Your Money
So let’s take a look at some of the new releases this week.
First, Ten Foot Pole released a new cd, Bad Mother Trucker. This cd is kind of a hybrid between their last cd, Insider, and their cd before that, Unleashed. There’s more of an aspect of dynamic changes, instead of straight-forward punk. For the most part, however, Ten Foot Pole’s sound is the same . . . but there are fewer bands like them these days. I suggest picking up “Bad Mother Trucker” if you like that fast punk rock stuff.
Viva Death, the Face to Face side project featuring Chris Schifflett from The Foo Fighters, released their self titled debut cd as well. Viva Death is a, well, intruiging sound. You can’t even begin to guess why they’d ever need three baritone guitars, but they have 3. The songs are very politically based, and the sound is rather dark. If you like Face to Face, obviously you should pick it up because it’s still Trevor Keith singing.
A Beautiful Mistake released a new cd as well, called Light A Match I Deserve to Burn. Their sound is described as being part of the new emo-core genre, which includes Thrice, Thursday, and Taking Back Sunday. They are extremely similar to Thursday. I even hear exact chord structures being used in the same way. They do a bit more screaming though. So Thursday fans might want to check it out.
Snapcase released a new cd, End Transmission, and it sounds like Snapcase is the new face of melodic hardcore. They’ve been growing a lot and I think their sound has really come to a full point. Definitely worth a listen.
To Save or Spend
This week I’m only reporting new information on coming releases. If you’d like to see a full list, you might want to refer to my last column (in the future I’ll do a full list, but this week I don’t have the leisure of doing so).
From Fat Wreck Chords:
November 5th: Avail, “Front Porch Stories”. There’s no mp3’s up so I can’t tell you what this release is going to sound like.
November 19th: Fat Music Volume 6, Uncontrollable Fatulance. There will be a bunch of unreleased stuff from Fat Wreck bands like The Lawrence Arms, NOFX, Strung Out, and Rise Against.
