Weekly Rewind: 10.26.02
Posted by Jeff Modzelewski on 10.26.2002

Welcome to my new column! I’ve been debating on what to write about, what sort of “theme” I wanted my column to have. So after discussing this column with a few of my buddies (one who actually makes his living in the music business, and another who is just as obsessed as I am with music) it was decided that writing a weekly column with a running theme is way too restrictive. So… I decided to pull a cop-out. I have a format. I have some sort of ongoing “theme.” I’m gonna do a news recap! Yeah, they do it over at the wrestling portion of this site, but, honestly, I think it’s a pretty good thing to have. Plus, I’ll get to ramble and spew out my own brand of music opinions every week, and who doesn’t want to hear what I have to say? Anyways, on with the show!

Drugs on Kid Rock’s bus

Are we really surprised here? Police are saying that they found a bit of coke, a few joints, and some cash in a metal briefcase. Luckily, Kid Rock wasn’t on the bus, or this amazing talent may actually have been arrested. Gee, what a horrible situation that would’ve been. Dear Lord, you’ve taken Joe C away from us, please let us hold on to the Kid!

Newsweek to release the private journals of Kurt Cobain

I’m really torn up on this one. 411 has already put some of the published excerpts from the journals up in the news section, which is understandable, since we are a news site. But, personally, as a Nirvana fan, I don’t feel that I have the right to read the private journals of Kurt. Honestly, as a person who respects another’s right to privacy, I don’t feel that I have the right to read anyone’s private journal unless they specifically give me that right. Just because Kurt killed himself and became something of a Generation X hero, that doesn’t give us the right to infringe on his personal, private thoughts. As for whoever is in charge of his estate (Courtney) and is allowing this to happen, I hope that you realize that you’re going against the explicit wishes of a man that you were supposed to love. As a person reporting stuff in the music industry, I’ll probably read the stuff that’s released. At least I’ll read the stuff posted on 411. But I sure as hell won’t be paying money to Newsweek for the privilege.

Christina Aguilera Loves Kiddy Porn

In the new video for Aguilera’s song “Dirty,” there are posters in the background, written in Thai, that say “Thailand’s sex tourism” and “Young Underage Girls.” Ok, first off, why would they have posters written in Thai in this video? I haven’t seen the video, and I sure as hell won’t go out looking for it on MTV, but can someone explain that to me? As for the messages on the posters, at least they’re not lying to ya! You want to bang a 13 year old, Thailand’s the place to go! Damn, I new that my fiancé and I should’ve looked into some more “exotic” locations for our honeymoon!

RIAA, GOP allow webcasters to keep going
So it looks like the webcasters will be able to stay on for at least a little while. Instead of forcing the 70 cents per 1,000 plays rule, right now net broadcasters are simply required to pay the minimum $500 payment, and they can stay on the air. This all thanks to Sen. Jesse Helms, who put a hold on the law earlier this week, thus preventing it from going through the Senate, at least for the time being.

Ok, first off, it’s pretty sad that I’m actually cheering on Jesse Helms here. However, I can’t understand why Congress and the RIAA feel the need to charge internet broadcasters a fee in order to play their tunes. If the RIAA wants to go after someone, go after the damn radio stations that work on a pay-per-play basis. But ever since Napster, the music industry feels that there’s pretty much no redeeming feature to the internet. It’s a radio station, only it goes out to the whole world instead of just a small area. How is this a bad thing? How is exposure for your music not good? Please, do I have to beg some Democrat to support the webcasters here? Or do I actually have to support the GOP on this one?

Kiss to play a show with Symphony. Metallica pissed that Kiss is “stealing our flow”

Kiss has agreed to play a show in Australia, featuring an unplugged set, a regular set, and a set with the symphony to close off the show. The show will consist of all 4 original members, plus the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and will be available on PPV. An eventual DVD release is planned.

All I have to say on this is that I’m so sick of Kiss that it’s pathetic. They’re not that good. They never were that good. They were rock theatre. Their music is mediocre. And now, the Kiss juggernaut is a money making machine with no talent behind it. It’s a franchise, not a band. Gene Simmons said it himself that, when he (finally) retires, he hopes that other musicians step in and fill their shoes and keep Kiss going. Does anyone want to see that? Is that anyone’s definition of a band? I didn’t think so.

Oasis cancels gig due to terrorism. In other news, terrorists pissed off that they blew up Bali before getting a chance to do some good for the world

Yes, the brothers Gallagher are making it into the news once again for canceling shows, this time due to “extreme security precautions” in Manila. Like Manila was such a nice place before recent terrorist threats. Maybe if Oasis didn’t suck so hard, someone might actually care about this story. As it is, I don’t.

Britney Spears doing PPV. No word yet if Jenna Jameson will be involved

So Britney is going to broadcast a show from 2000 on PPV. I’m sorry, but did I miss something here? I thought that the whole idea behind doing a PPV was that it was live, or at least that it wasn’t 2 freakin’ years old. Why would you buy this thing? It’s a 2 year old Pay Per View! The only way I would pay to see Britney is if it was a 3-hour lez-fest with Jenna and Houston. One can only dream…
Faith Hill Debuts at #1 on Billboard. Bon Jovi is said to be “really pissed”

Elvis is no longer Billboard King after only 4 weeks on top. If I’m not mistaken (which I very well may be), the Beatles 1 album stayed at #1 for way longer than that. Poor Elvis, proving once and for all that, while he may have popularized rock and roll, those damn kids always ruin his fun. Then again, it may just be because The Beatles were so much more talented than Elvis, but that’s just hearsay. However, in good news, Bon Jovi’s “Bounce” fell from #2 to #13. That “whooshing” sound you hear is Bon Jovi’s career freefalling once again. Just cause you sing about 9/11 doesn’t make your music suck any less, boys.

Run-D.M.C. re-issue autobiography

The Run-D.M.C. biography “Tougher than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC” is hitting stores again, this time with added pictures and stuff. I’m sorry, but did anyone read this the first time? Has Run-D.M.C. done anything in recent memory that calls for this re-release? Touring with closing-on-has-been rockers Aerosmith does not count. (And before I get bitched at, I love Aerosmith, but they’ve sucked ever since Nine Lives.) Unless you’re a true hardcore fan of a certain band, no one buys these books. I love music, and I really can’t think of any band whose biography I would buy. Hell, the only reason I read Mick Foley’s books was because I got them for free. Biographies pretty much suck as a general rule, and very few of them are either insightful or interesting.

Insane Clown Posse Back with New Tour and Final Joker Card

Yes, the wicked clowns are here to unleash a furious barrage of Faygo on the world once again. The band will release “The Wraith: Shangri-La” on November 5, and there’s a tour to follow up on what I’m sure will be a rousing success. Can you hear my sarcasm there folks? I bet you can…

The Last Word

Well, thanks for sitting through this rambling column here everyone. I promise that, as time goes on, it’ll get better. Until then, sit tight. I have a few cool things planned for the next month or so, and hopefully they’ll pan out. I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag yet, but with any luck I’ll be getting some pretty cool original content up on this site. Other than that, feel free send me your thoughts, feelings, concerns, arguments, or death threats. Until then, peace out my nizzles.
