Thoughts on the Bon Iver side project Volcano Choir, lots of TV On The Radio News, one of Sunset Rubdown hit by lightning, new music from Built To Spill, Weezer's awesome album cover, Sonic Youth's lame excuse and more.
The bit at the start
Hello, I was away last week. Had to go to Galway for work so I was forced to skip last week's column. The upside to it was that I got to see Okkervil River play there but more of that probably next week.
Let's start off with a review that I promised in the last column.
Over on the Those Geese blog the opening line of the review of Deerhunter's recent Dublin gig reads ...
Deerhunter played Whelan's last night. I suppose, if yours was a generally systemic view of history, you'd say that this is because Deerhunter always play in Ireland.
If one were so inclined to make it a similar charge could be made against Justin Vernon. The past 16 months has seen Vernon come to Ireland 4 times as/as part of Bon Iver, 3 times in Dublin last year and most recently it was back to his old stomping grounds in Galway where he used to work selling mobile phones.
One thing that you could say about Deerhunter in their defence is that despite their comparatively short lifespan as a band they've already amassed a pretty sizable catalog to pick and choose their setlists from. Vernon on the other hand doesn't have that many songs in his Bon Iver repertoire, there's 9 tracks on For Emma, Forever Ago one of which is more of an extended outro to "Creature Fear", another song that's exclusive to the iTunes version of the record, the wonderful "Bracket, WI" from this year's Dark Was The Night comp. and the 4 cuts from the Blood Bank EP. Throw in in the occasional Talk Talk cover and you've essentially got the same set being peddled over and over. Some nights it's great, some nights it's not.
It's not something that I think you should hold against Vernon, maybe he's just one of those guys who doesn't crank out the tunes in a rapid fire manner, and generally his hit rate once he actually comes up with a song is pretty good.
But possibly another reason for there being not a whole of Bon Iver material is that Vernon's attention has been focused in part on finishing the first album by Volcano Choir, his collaboration with members of Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, though considering that he's been working on this project for a couple of years now maybe it just backs up the idea that he doesn't work that quickly.
In listening to Unmap there's definitely echoes of Bon Iver in it, most notably on "Still", which is basically "Woods" from the Blood Bank EP, but thanks to the addition of droning synths, rattling steel guitar strings and occasional drums it's no longer an unpleasant to listen to mess of acapella vocoder altered singing. Those multi voiced arrangements, such a hallmark of For Emma ... are also prominent on this album but that's basically where the similarities end. Mostly Unmap is a more experimental sounding record, acoustic guitar based songs have been replaced by ambient washes, repeating loops, and beeps and drum strikes which bounce around the mix due to clever use of tremolo and panning.
Mostly too, it's not as good as the last record that Vernon put out. But it is a damn sight better than Hazeltons the pretty much straight acoustic folk record that he released in highly limited numbers prior to that under his own name. I think perhaps he's found what he does best in the tricky to pull off blending of traditional song writing with his more experimental impulses and if and when he returns to that that's the next record from him to potentially get excited about.
Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.
Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer
I was slow coming around but this clicked on Saturday.
You news, you lose
TV On The Radio News.
Massive Attack have a new EP out on October 6th called Splitting The Atom. As is common with the Bristol outfit the songs feature guest vocals with Elbow's Guy Garvey, Martina Topley-Bird and Horace Andy.
There's also a 7 minute cut on it called pray for rain featuring Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio. You can listen to it here
In related TVOTR news it's been a busy 12 months for the band. They released Dear Science last year to rapturous reviews and as you might expect they toured the hell out of it. On top of that Kyp Malone has been preparing his first album as Rain Machine and Dave Sitek did that thing with Scarlet Johansson. So it's not really a surprise that band announced that they're taking a break. In an interview with MTV Adebimpe said that they band were taking 12 months off, "live a life and change things up."
I think at this point they probably deserve it.
Lightning Strikes.
I saw Sunset Rubdown play in Dublin on Saturday. They played a 90 minute set and they were phenomenally good. But in a way it's a miracle that the gig even took place because not too long ago bassist/drummer Marc Nicol was struck by lightening.
In a post on the band's label's website Nicol went on to explain what happened to him, "My heart started back up after the electrical shock. I woke up feeling like I was suffocating and was delirious. Then I passed out for an hour, woke back up and saw the hair singed on my leg. Only then I knew."
Also he got himself a bitching scar …
New Built To Spill tune.o
We're getting closer and closer to the October 6th release of the new Built To Spill album There is no enemy. You can listen to one of the songs from it, "Hindsight" here.
Weezer have at least have a sense of humour.
I've pretty much lost all interest in Weezer's music following a massive collapse in musical standards from the band but their recent announcement that they were naming their forthcoming album Raditude raised a bit of a chuckle from me.
Then when they revealed this album cover …
… I remembered why I used to love them as much as I did. Urge to listen to the Blue album again, rising.
The presumably dreadful record will be out on October 27th.
The most middle class reason for a gig cancellation ever.
Rock n' Roll eh? Sounds like a great life right?
Drinking all day, all the drugs you want, girls that wouldn't look at you sideways ordinarily queuing up to fuck you.
You've gotta handle it in moderation though. Playing music pays your bills and if you indulge to much you might have to cancel gigs.
Or if you're Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth you can fracture your wrist playing fucking tennis and have to reschedule/cancel a number of dates.
The dates in question are:
09-25 Pomona, CA - Fox Theater
09-26 Santa Barbara, CA - Arlington Theatre
09-28 San Diego, CA - House of Blues
09-29 Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern
10-01 Phoenix, AZ - Marquee Theater
10-02 Tucson, AZ - Rialto Theatre
10-04 Austin, TX - Austin City Limits
A couple of those have been cancelled outright (it's not like they're gonna reschedule ACL for them) but the rescheduled dates are as follows:
01-04 Tucson, AZ - Rialto Theatre #
01-05 Phoenix, AZ - Marquee Theatre #
01-07 San Diego, CA - House of Blues #
01-08 Pomona, CA - Fox Theatre #
01-09 Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern #
# with Sic Alps
I would never have expected to hear this as an excuse for a Sonic Youth cancellation. As I type this the US Open final is on and Federer is 2-1 up in the third set. This is akin to him having to pull out of that tournament because he sliced up his hand by hitting it against the tailed bridge of a jazzmaster while going at it with a screwdriver.
Actually that would be kind of cool.
A new video to wrap things up.
