Dancing About Architecture Indie Music News 10.13.09
Posted by Ian Wright on 10.13.2009

The bit at the start

Hey, another week another Dancing About Architecture.

Over the course of the past few columns I've mentioned the pretty stellar lineup for the soundtrack to "New Moon", the sequel to "Twilight" featuring the likes of Grizzly Bear, Thom Yorke and a Bon Iver/St. Vincent collaboration. Pretty exciting sounding right?

Well it leaked over the weekend.

Big … fat … meh.

There's not really a truly outstanding song on the collection, it's actually pretty disappointing overall. The Thom Yorke song wouldn't make it anywhere near his solo album never mind a Radiohead album and the song with Annie Clarke and Justin Vernon collaboration is really Bon Iver by numbers and you can barely hear Clarke's voice in the mix. The best song on the thing is possibly Deathcab For Cutie's effort, and that can never be a good thing.

Beg, borrow, buy, steal or download this album.

Bob Dylan – Another Side Of Bob Dylan.

Somewhat overlooked but still excellent early record.

You news, you lose

Pavemen-t-p, Pavemen-t-p, Pavemen-t-p

If you're really, REALLY desperate to see Pavement reunited as soon as possible then you won't have to wait for the bunch of Central Park shows next September to take place for that to happen because it was announced last week that the band will curate one of next years ATP Festivals in Butlin's, Minehead in the UK on the weekend of May 14-16.

Tickets for the festival are already on sale and it has sold very, very well so far. There's probably going to be a bunch of other dates announced in the coming weeks too, I'd say Coachella is almost a dead cert and Primavera is also very likely to happen too.

Free new music of the week: 1

Frightened Rabbit will release the first single from their as yet untitled, as yet without a release date album on November 16th on Fatcat Records. "Swim Until You Can't See Land", along with it's b-side "Fun Stuff" are both currently streaming on the label's site here.

Anyone want to be in Jay Reatard's band?

Jay Reatard writes fantastic songs but his reputation for being a somewhat difficult character is quite widely well known at this point.

He announced on his twitter last week that his band had quit on him, and he didn't do it in very conciliatory terms …

"Band quit! Fuck them! They are boring rich kids who can't play for ahit anyways ... Say hello to your ugly and boring wifes opps I mean lifes guys suck it."

Reatard is currently recruiting a new band and as yet his upcoming tour dates have not been cancelled.

Free, new music of the week: 2

The score to the upcoming film The Box was written by Arcade Fire's Win Butler and Regine Chassagne along with their buddy Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy. If you go to the film's website you'll be able to hear some of the that score.

Loads of Animal Collective news.

There's going to be a new Animal Collective EP released by the end of the year. Amazon are currently listing a December 8th release for Fall Be Kind on Domino Records. Speaking to Pitchfork last week Avey Tere said that it's a 5-track EP that is darker in tone to their recent material and will have a digital release in the middle of November.

Also hitting stores soon on November 9th is Merriweather Post Pavillion's "Brothersport" as a single. It'll be out on 10" with a b-side called "Bleeding".

All that information and more can be found in an extended interview that you can read .

Oh they're also getting ready to reissue Campfire Songs. But that record stinks so I wouldn't get too excited about that.

Free, new music of the week: 3

Three new Battles songs from the recent Warp 20 gig.

Pulp reissues.

Boy do I really like Pulp. In the fullness of time I've come to think that they really were the finest band of the Britpop era. On November 17th Universal in North America will reissue three of the band's albums His n' Hers from 1994, Different Class from 1995, and 1998's This Is Hardcore. These deluxe editions will feature B-sides, demos and notes by Jarvis Cocker.

The YouTube video of the week

This is actually not from a Jay Reatard show, it's actually Jay with his other band The Reatards (you following?)

With this type of on stage behaviour you can see why his bandmates might quit.

If you can you should go to these gigs.
